  • Hi Everyone!
    Time to get into the fuel system a bit. There have been some bad leaks and I replace the fuel cock to try and get it under control.
    Enjoy!

      As always, I enjoy your videos and tips even thought I have been doing my own wrenching for 50 some odd yeas. Always good to see and hear some one else's work. Love that you pint out the dangers of less than good work, like the fuel line hanging too low and mentioning "NO" plastic fuel filters. Might mention direction of fuel cock lever, left zo/off, middle 'auf/on and right res.

    Petcock, that's a word I haven't heard for a long time. I had one on the tank of my Triumph Bonneville. Exactly the same idea as your Porche project car. Gravity fed carbs......When engineering was easier ;-) Thanks for the nice educational video. John, UK

    I enjoyed this video and learned a lot from it. I had no idea that there was a fuel switch that you could turn in the cabin. Last time I did that, I was flying a Cessna. Very nice that you could turn that switch and access the fuel reserve. :)

      Hahaha. 356s have quite a few less common features for their times due to the general design being so old compared to when produced.

    One thing to keep in mind is that non-ethanol gasoline will stay fresh a lot longer than fuel with ethanol in it. If you're storing a car for the winter or just don't drive your classic all that much, spending extra for non-ethanol fuel is definitely worth it. Also, it won't rot out that old cloth-covered German fuel line we all know and love. :D

    Is there that fuel selector lever because there is no fuel gauge ? I had that on a 70's era Honda motorcycle.

    • @eskamobob8662
      @eskamobob8662 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      356c most certainly has a fuel gauge. I'm not sure about the pre-a cars though. It very well may be a hold over from there. Porsche (and VW) in their early years basically just tuned the cars to run better (played with spring sizes, sway bars, camber correctors, and different engines) as opposed to making major fundamental changes unless regulated to do so. Bad part of it is that by the time the 356 was ending it was extraordinarily old technology. Good news is that 20+ years of tweaking basically the exact same platform leads to some amazingly dialed in cars

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob is correct. The 356C (as well as the A and earlier cars) do have a fuel gauge. It is just nice to be able to switch over when you are low (provided you remember to switch it back). I'm guessing it could be a ways between gas stations in Europe in the 50-60s.

    Where do I get this type of in line fuel filter?
    I bought one from Amazon but it was too big.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would suggest either SierraMadre, Pelican, or Stoddard. Amazon won't have what you need. It's too specialized.

    Another great video! You always managed to get great camera angles, so we can see exactly what's going on. I've picked up a number of good tip for my SC, while watching you work on your Carrera.
    One of the things I love about old Porsches, is the great supply of new parts! I'd love to get a 928, but unfortunately, I don't have a Franny living in my neighbourhood, to run to for help, with repair and service tips. :-)

    • @eskamobob8662
      @eskamobob8662 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the one and only shot I am wishing for in these videos is a shot that moves from the outside of the car to where you are looking at underneath. It can be kind of hard to get fram of reference if you dont already know the cars pretty well. Ik I struggled on some of the 308 videos because of that. That said, every shot that is here is clean, visible, and well lit. 3 things that most car videos on youtube cant even claim one of

    I’ll have to remember the tip about using the 10mm wrench to pop off that ball type connector! The air cooled BMW motorbikes use a similar petcock (much smaller, without the cup), the way they connect to the tank with the special nut w/ left-hand threads always confused me when I started riding (and wrenching on) them!

  • @secoff1
    @secoff1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Franny good point on the plastic fuel filters. honestly it is something i never thought about and its the same location where I put them on my bugs. However i always carry a spare in my toolbag under the bonnet. as always interesting vid. Indy

    How come you didn't replace the fuel rubber hoses?

  • @tacolove892
    @tacolove892 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fuel lines are cheap. Replace it all . You can disconnect the tank by snipping the line just below the tank and plugging it. Vice grips on line to pinch it above snipperough! There will likely be some spill.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no hose out of the tank... The petcock screws directly into the bottom of the tank...

    Hi Heidi & Franny, I don't know if you've ever seen or used this product, but I've found it to be far superior to any other fuel treatment product on the market. It's called "Helix 5 in 1". They guarantee your fuel to be chemically stable for two years, but it will definitely keep fuel fresh longer. A friend of ours put it in his boat and did not use it for four years; it started on the 2nd try, and the fuel had ZERO off-smell to it. Amazon and Dennis Kirk Racing carry it. I'm sure there are other vendors, but those are the two I use the most.

    Always appreciate your videos, particularly the Ferrari ones since I own one of the same vintage. On that new fuel cock, is it just me, or is there a fairly substantial dent in that fuel pickup tube? Seems like that could cause problems if it isn't an optical illusion.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a little bent, but not enough to affect the flow. Good eye! I'm guessing that was tied to the filter being a bit smooched...

    Mice can indeed do some serious damage in a car. They've eaten part of the sound insulation of my BMW. I took the entire insulation out and now I'm experiencing more induction noise, which is actually quite lovely, so in a way these rodents improved my driving experience ;)
