Getting Ready for Samhain - Dressing my Altar

A very warm welcome to my channel!
This week I am starting to get my home ready to celebrate Samhain and I’m also adding a few pieces of Halloween spook! Come with me as I take my Mabon altar down and re-dress it for this beautiful and sacred sabbat. Here in the northern hemisphere, we are celebrating the third harvest, marking the end of summer and the end of the Witch’s year as we honour our ancestors and those who went before us.

When you started by saying you understand that not everyone wants to or can honour ancestors, I think my heart stopped beating. I was orphaned in infancy, and what I DO know about my dead relatives doesn't make me want to think about them 😂 I think it's the first time I've ever heard anyone bring this subject up, and I'm grateful for it. In regards to my own practice, I used to 'mourn' the family I deserved, but now I treat it like a new year's party 🎉

What a beautiful altar Alison thanks for sharing such a personal sacred space I can't wait to do mine, I have exactly the same ancestor tree😊 I bring out photos of family and pets I've lost, I also bake a traditional Irish barmbreac at samhain now in memory of my dad as he loved it so that is lovely for cakes and ale. George was so excited 🐾🐾 bless him Samhain zoomies🦇🦇 and your hair looked gorgeous🎃🍂🍁

I absolutely love how George was playing around. So cute! The addition of the rosemary and fresh leaves was a great idea. I will be borrowing that! I currently don't honor ancestors or the dead, mostly because I don't have any that I had a relationship with. However, I love how you spoke of 'all who came before', I think I'll check into that. You are right, ancestors are more than just the ones we've known.
He's absolutely nuts!! Whenever I am doing anything even remotely Witchy he just has to stick his little furry snoot in. I completely understand about not honouring ancestors - it's very personal and not as simple as it sounds. One of the reasons I always visit a local cemetery or two during this period is to pay my respects to the people who shaped the town where I was born and where I live. There is so much to discover. Love your hair! Samhain here tends to be low key; in previous years I've made pumpkin soup, bread, and we used to go down to the Dark Gathering at Boscastle which was brilliant. My altar doesn't change much other than I'll put tarot cards on, either from a spread or ones I've chosen. I hope you find peace with the parent stuff....I had an estranged relationship with my dad and only got back with him literally on his death bed; my parents were/are what they are, flawed human beings, and I came to the same conclusion - it is what it is. Onwards. And BB xxx

My pickiness with scents is what led to me to research how to make my own perfumes, so I understand making something that works with your specific needs. And thank you for mentioning burning things can be bad for pets! The more people say it the more awareness is spread and the happier pets we’ll all have. Hi love your altar! I have my Samhain altar under my TV, I have just got some orange light up maple leaves they look really cheery now that it's getting darker, I have loads of things on it Skull, ornamental apples ,sunflowers toad stools, fairy, all things autumnal! I have a separate ancestors altar with photos of past ancestors a cactus plant a candle which I light every morning,other various ornaments, and Hecate looking down upon it! Lovely seeing your Samhain altar and how you put it together. It looks beautiful and very meaningful with the ancestor elements. George is super cute! I loved your spooky ghost cushion in the video before 😊 I was in Tesco and they had a similar one - I got the very last one on the shelf! It's sitting next to my fluffy green pumpkin on my bed. I read a piece a few months ago that said something like 70% of adults have cuddly toys in their beds. I'm not sure it's quite that high... but a lot of us seem to get comfort from them! 👻😊

Hi Alison. You decorated your home so beautifully for Samhain. I too feel some mixed feelings about putting a pic of my dad on my Samhain altar. We had a very difficult painful relationship. Since i started practising (only 3 years ago) i'm thinking that this year i'm ready to put his pic on it. Well i'll see how i feel about it when the altar is done because it's still in Mabon sabbath atm. Your little Georges is so cute. Blessed be. 🙏

Hello Alison I loved seeing how you put everything together for your altars, it all looks so lovely and cosy. George definitely wanted to be on camera didn't he, he was so funny and reminded me of my own cat Molly who also likes to kick at the rug!! Hi Alison, we have a family gathering on Samhain with lots of food including pumpkin soup and home made bread. We then have a little fire in the back garden (fire pit).
I adopted a little French Bulldog, so it's going to be very different this time. My alter, for the time being, is my bookshelf. This is only until I get my new sideboard and drawers, but needs must lol, especially a curious pooch in the house.

Well this all sounds wonderful to me! And the firepit is an absolute Samhain essential! I have Ritual Group on the Saturday before Samhain. I'm leading our ritual this year so I am busy preparing that. I have the week of Samhain off (I always have that week off) and Mark and I are off to do a few nice things together. On the Tuesday evening my best friends are joining us for Samhain Dinner (another tradition). On Samhain itself we always go out to lunch and then it's a crazy busy evening with doorstep callers! After they've all gone home I turn off all the lights and hold my own ritual to honour my ancestors. I look forward to all of it! xx

Your house looks gorgeous i have to say. Your Alters are very beautiful.
We have what i think of, as a "Season area" in the dining room. I have made a few clay toadstools, and a little home made broomstick made from one of our cats Cat-Nip sticks and some string. I've hung up (dried in the oven) orange, apple, lemon n lime slices tied with cinnamon sticks hanging from shelves (I do like doing arts n crafts!) and daughter n i painted a couple of Halloween pictures so its all very Autumny!
Your place is much Better and we only decorate one room!

Love George! 😂 Love the warm but spooky vibes. Again a source of inspiration for me. Went to visit a Victorian cemetery in Victoria last week. (That’s about as old as we get here in BC 😂) walked in and the first headstone I walked up to had my last name, then walking out, the last headstone was my ancestors name. Neither a relation of mine. Very spooky in a good way! ❤👻 love the synchronicities! Can’t wait for your next video!

I LOVE your hair and your altar. I think it's perfect! I noticed you and I have the same athame... lol! I currently have 5 altars in my spare room. I do have an ancestor altar, but it' also my healing altar. My recently departed brother's picture is on there. And I have a family altar, for those who are still alive, that I pray for every day.
