Come with me to Sutton Scarsdale Hall - one of my very favourite places - to spend some time in the fresh air in a beautiful location and talk about the things I wish someone had told me when I started practising Witchcraft seriously. There are so many things I wish I'd known, and I'm sharing them with you because if you're new to the Craft, it can be daunting as well as exciting. I really hope you find them helpful but remember they are only my opinion. One of your 'responsibilities' as a Witch is to find your own path and learn along the way. Please do share your thoughts in the comments - I'd love to know if there's anything you would add to my list.

Thank you so much for today’s video! You are the wise woman we are all looking for. You come across as your authentic self. My interest began with the wheel of the year, both agriculturally and spiritually. I have been reading about the green witch, hedge witch, home and hearth witch. What I see on Tik Tok does not speak to me. And, thank you for your comments about subscription boxes. So true. One candle, incense, crystal, tarot card, jewelry, herbs or spices. I would rather choose my own and know where they came from. Creating a life practice is very individual.😊
That is such a lovely thing to say, thank you so much. I can only talk about my own experiences and I try very hard not to judge, even when I think something is highly questionable (like the ‘Witch Diploma’ thing 🙄). I think it’s great that we have each other to learn from and that we are free to cherry-pick whatever aspects of the Craft work for us. Our craft will change and evolve as we grow and I love that xxx

Years ago, when I was feeling very lost and confused about my general path in life, someone said to me "If it's practical, it's spiritual" That has stuck with me, but I understand it far more now than it did then. There's a lot you have said that resonates! Thank you for sharing so candidly.
Beautiful building and history. Thank you for taking us along. I really resonate with every thing you’ve said here. I didn’t work with deity up until recently. Mother Mary kept coming up so I’ve just started on my journey with her. I’m not a Christian Witch, I see Mother Mary as Mother Earth. I don’t celebrate every sabbat either, only when I’m feeling it. To me witchcraft is in the every day mundane, I only do ritual when I’m feeling it etc.
I absolutely get where you’re coming from. I think that sometimes Deity will present itself at a particular moment and when that happens I’ll fully embrace it, but it does not form the basis of my practice. I 100% agree that Witchcraft is in the everyday aspects of life and that if you try and force yourself to do something you’re not feeling, you will end up frustrated, disappointed and bored. I’m going to talk about Everyday Magic in a future video and I can’t wait to hear everyone’s feelings about that.

Thanks for this video, there's some really good advice and I agree completely about many of the courses. With the subscription boxes, as you say, there seem to be a lot that just have the items you can buy yourself. I will just add though that there's one that I've found to be really special. It's the Witches Moon subscription which comes from the States or Canada. It's $79, around £65, but they have the most beautiful items in there, most of which are specially made for the boxes. I've had stunning altar statues, corn dolls, jewellery, crystal wands of the highest quality that are still going strong as sturdy now several years later. And they're things that I've never seen anywhere else. They also include a great letter (and some blank parchment paper) for each season/sabbat/month, which explains the contents of the box and the month as a magical timepoint. As well as the amazing magickal items made for the season each box has a really good quality oil, bath or incense blend and the best incense I've ever come across. I'm not sponsored by Witches Moon, honestly :) but just wanted to give feedback on how special their boxes are. None of the others I've seen even come close really.

Been watching for a few weeks. This video was wonderful! I was once involved in a pagan tradition that turned out to be cultish. Now I mostly am solo. I do what I want, when I want and I enjoy so much more.
I bet you do, and I'm so glad you have found a path that is serving you as it should. There is a lot to be said for working on your own, and it's in those moments that I feel the most joy and connection with my craft. I enjoy our ritual gatherings because they are beautiful, but if you can truly find comfort on your own, I think you've cracked it 👍xx

This is so true. I started off with Wicca in the mid 90’s and over the years I outgrew a lot of that. Im very close to Goddess energy, and now that I am in my early 60’s and more connected to the crone, I found that she moved me closer to nature and the natural ways of living and celebrating life and the natural world. She is the 4 elements and represent time. I feel less pressure working with her as a patron. We are magickal beings. It took me many years to get where I am now. I’ve had my fair share of magickal and spiritual challenges over the years, and I am now wise enough to be aware of it and to make better choices. Thank you for a lovely video.

Thank you for sharing and being honest about these things. So many people are roped into the glamour of the certificates or the boxes, etc. I thought I needed all the glam. That’s not the case. You use what you find calls out to you. Love this video. ❤
I can understand why people might think they need 'stuff.' Society is so driven by consumerism and it's so sad to see. Don't get my wrong, I love shiny things as much as anyone but I don't like the idea that you aren't as 'good' if you don't have these things. It's much better (and much more fulfilling) when something finds you x

Hi, I'm a recent subscriber and also a fifty something Alison 😊 I found myself nodding 'yes I did that' to just about everything you said!! I've been wandering this path for a while now and still haven't labelled myself or follow a deity. I tried really hard in the beginning to 'find' my label and deity and was disappointed when it wasn't clear to me. I speak to the universe and nature in setting intentions and that seems to work for me. Thanks for the real advice and straight talking 🙂

This was wonderful! Love the backdrop of the birdsong & history. It’s so great to have it reinforced that we can be whoever we want to be, in whatever way we want to; that we do what feels right to us, for our heart & for our intent. It makes so much sense as it shouldn’t be a burden or a chore, but something to delight in & immerse ourselves in.

It was such a lovely day up at Sutton Scarsdale and the birds were so loud. It was beautiful. I hadn’t been up for a few weeks and I really needed it. I’d not been feeling too good ( I actually ended up in hospital the following evening) and the fresh air and space really helped. Everyone needs a place to escape to xx
I didn’t realise it was just after this that you ended up in hospital. I knew you had of course, from FB, just goes to show how quickly things can change & how we need to , in a cliché, ‘live in the moment’ & maintain a positive outlook- something I frequently really struggle with . Everything you say is so true. I was initially seduced by witchcraft 101 materials and had a couple of subscription boxes that in truth were simply miscellaneous witchy tat 😮. Then I read Rebel Witch and it gave me permission to do it my way. I’ve not looked back 🎉

I had my spiritual awakening and acknowledged my pagan beliefs (not wicca) in 2016. I've never considered myself a witch, but the wise woman is the name I prefer to call. It is a calling, that you are awakened to, and spiritual. I don't actually practice witchcraft, but have a resonance with the Green man, Herne and Green lady. I do believe it is an awakening within ourselves, and it's our choice to follow or not. Everything Green is wonderful to me and nature. I didn't have any family members who were or acknowledged a pagan spirituality at the time until I met my husband in 2017. I feel I've always been of the pagan spirituality and live it with my husband. We feel spiritual freedom living this life. I believe the Universe is a consciousness, and that many other spirits work with it and are part of it, this is how I view and believe. Blessed Be Alison.

I try and mark all the Sabbats but I'm the opposite of you, its Beltane and Litha that are the special ones for me, personally 😊 I love the advice you give in this video, I think we all worried over some or all of these things when we first started out! ❤

Hi Alison, really enjoyed this video. As i have mentioned in comments before i am cautiously exploring witchcraft so this video was great to myth bust and ressure. I was bought up Roman Catholic and went to religious schools, taught by nuns, had mass on fridays, had a school preist the lot! And although i find many of the teachings and practices interesting so much of it just never sat well with me. I was always asking why and always curious (too curious for some teachers! I think i was about 10 when i announced in an RE class that i didnt think religion had anything to do with God, which went down well lol) My first witchy experince was when i was around 25 going to a Pagan funeral of a very dear and much missed friend, i remember leaving the service and thinking 'now THIS feels right, i want a funeral like this'. However the Catholic upbringing requires a bit of shaking and even the word Pagan or witch is enough to bring on palpatations in some lol, but i am currently researching the pagan roots of christianity which i am finding very interesting. I know i want somthing that connects me closer to nature and that is my focus for my journey currently. Thank you for taking the time to speak so openly and honestly and creating such a lovely little corner of the internet ❤ I continue to enjoy your videos immensely ❤
Oh my goodness, I can just imagine how well your statement about God and religion went down!! 🤣🤣I think a lot of us came to the Craft in the same way - by questioning and feeling, rather than just being told to accept a doctrine we just don’t ’get’. I too went to church for some time, trying to find ‘it’ - whatever it was. I would look at all the others who were in the throes of joy and I felt nothing. I felt cheated and disappointed. I understand exactly what you mean. You can take joy in this journey because nobody is going to come at you and tell you you’re wrong. Well, some might - but not me. And if they do, pay them no mind. Thank you so much for this vlog. I had a friend whom I knew was a witch ,when I told her I was interested in learning more 20 years into our friendship. The thing she told me was to do a course😡 she had done a lot of them with her certificates lol. So that’s what I did, I never got to the end of it and she kept on about it. I then gave up wanting to get more into witchcraft. We are no longer friends for several reasons! So I really wish I’d known what you have talked about in this vlog. I am so excited to start my journey again, thank you so much.

I get that every Witch has to find their own way. But I genuinely believe that you will learn more by going out into nature than you ever will through any ‘course’ or even from books to a certain extent. Listen to the wind in the trees, stand on the earth in your bare feet. Put your hands in the earth, feel the salty wind in your hair by the sea. Feel the rain on your face. Watch the animals that cross your path. Observe the birds as the sun rises and sets. Listen, look, wonder. Touch the flowers, leaves, plants, rocks, trees. We are all governed by these seemingly insignificant things. They all touch our lives every single day. Find a tree or plant or crystal or herb that you feel drawn to. Learn about it. Draw it, find out about its magical properties. Use it in your workings and write about what it felt like. This is the only ‘course’ you need. And it’s free! ♥️

Wow - had no idea about this place. We've been to Masson Mills loads of times, once saw some of the looms in action which was fabulous, and noisy! I'm new to the craft, and kind of doing my own thing; it's strange how often I've looked something up afterwards and found I was on the "right" lines with it. I don't think there is a wrong or right, just what is right for oneself. Loving your videos, thank you xxx (and yes, agree about the witch box subscriptions. I feel pretty similar about "ready made spells"!

Thank you for sharing this beautiful place! I can imagine how majestic it must've looked back in the day when it was occupied. So it looks like you've not met the witch police? lol... I must be the laziest of them all, but yes the witch police hasn't come up, nobody's complained lol I agree so much with those subscription boxes. It's nice to receive little surprises but it's for the most part really overpriced items that you may not even care to buy from a shop or don't know what to do with. Lots of gimmicks out there for just about anything. We're very profitable when we're insecure..

I’ve just started following you because being a fifty-something woman, I did not really resonate with the other channels run by younger women (no offence to them - just not in my wheelhouse). When I came across your videos I had only just claimed the word ‘witch’ as part of my make-up, even though I have been doing witchy things since I was a child. I love that you are so ‘normal’ (I mean that as a compliment) and you don’t subscribe to any hard or fast rules about what is ultimately a very intimate thing - your practice. I live in a small country town in Australia where I am a Holistic Practitioner and sometimes I am looked down on for my beliefs by the older women. I can only imagine what they would think if they knew that I have now added witch to my title. 😊 Thanks for making down-to-earth videos that don’t have all that fluff added to them. ❤
I'm so honoured that you are here and I am so glad that you have claimed 'Witch' for yourself - it is such a special moment when it finally happens! I understand completely about the younger Witches and absolutely no offence from me either - they are carrying the torch for the generations to come - but I wanted to come at it from our angle, because we have lived very different lives. I believe that everyone's Craft is theirs alone and nobody has the right to gatekeep or dictate how it should look. I want people to be able to watch my videos and think 'I can do that, but I will do it xxxx way' or 'I like that idea, but I think xxxx would work better for me.'

@@fifty-somethingwitch2406 I have just finished it. The content is very wise. I am just becoming involved with the craft at 60+ and I feel glad I have found this path now. I recently bought some tarot cards, the Witches Wisdom tarot, and I have drawn a card regularly to learn about myself and hopefully find some answers regarding certain aspects of my life. I do find it is guiding me and the answers are, I think, accurate. One card I drew said for me to plant a healing herb in my garden or windowsill, I googled how to plant and grow comfrey, and discovered a 3 hours workshop this coming Friday in my area which has a strong Celtic history and influence. The lady who holds the workshop sends out a subscription newsletter on full moons, a cycle that I have become interested in also, and also she celebrates Celtic/pagan (I am not sure what is what) sabbats. Although I am not interested in being part of a group, it feels promising to be close to others who are possibly interested in the same things. I have booked to attend a workshop in celebration of midsummer in June with the same person. I am glad you said about not always having to "feel" it when it comes to sabbats and also about not having to practice in a group. I am feeling my way forward and so far so good. I am also glad you are gaining subscribers. You are so down to earth and sincere and that is so appreciated. Thank you for sharing your favourite place and for all the information in your video. It supports what I am thinking and it is heartening to hear your thoughts. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi and thank you For today's video, many of the things you spoke about hit home with me toady.
Over years I found so many courses advertised for witchcraft and yes, mostly money making.
I am 60 next month so in witch terms that makes me a crone. However, in my past, the church played a huge part in my life. It wasn't my pathway however, yesterday I found myself at the local Methodist church. Don't laugh....I have no plausible explanation for this except possibly the fact that at my age, friends are seemingly nowhere to be found, and as I have been practising as a solitary, often it very very lonely.
I left the church originall, because I was in training for ordained ministry and I saw something that should never have happened in such a place, and I was silenced and driven out. Not forgetting the mind warping and out dated rules, regulations and politics.
The particular church I found myself in, knows my history and of course, the first thing they asked me was, could you stay and help us out because we are struggling. This same church refused to help me 15 years ago when I asked for their help.
As a younger woman, late teens, I was a practising witch and psychic medium, but I ended up with a Catholic man....big mistake. After leaving the church, I decided to get back on to the path that suited my soul and my entire being and I was doing really well, until yesterday.
Anyway I find myself at an impasse and feeling very conflicted today.
I also have long term illness and feel that I need more than just me as I live each day with my conditions. I have 3 autoimmune conditions and like you, I have really felt a little under the weather these past few weeks. Again, Leading me to the understanding that I need company with people and at my age that is difficult because there are not many with the same interests where I live.
I felt that I needed to reach out. Yes I agree with everything you have said today hun. If you were in my situation, what would you do ? I know only I can answer that but opinions are very welcome.

I’m so sorry to hear you are struggling at the moment. It must have taken real courage to get your feelings out in the open and you should be so proud of yourself.
I understand the conflicting feelings you have about the church. I also had experience with a local church many years ago - the one I was baptised into, in fact - where I just did not feel what other members were feeling, or claimed they were feeling. I cannot be dishonest about how I feel and I just knew it was not what I was searching for. I have great respect for anyone with faith but I do not have time for any form of religious doctrine or any faith that rules by fear. I knew from being very young that there was ‘something’ that I needed to find and I am just sorry that I was in my early 40s before I finally came out of the broom closet for good. I honestly think that you have to do whatever your heart and your gut tells you. But you also have to apply some rationale in that you know you were not treated well in the past. My personal mantra now is that nobody gets a second chance to hurt me or to use me. I think the craft has given me that confidence because I used to be an absolute doormat who just kept going back for more. You have to set boundaries and live by them.

Thank you for this informative video, much appreciated. I'm an older Solitary Witch and often do what feels right for me. I've also thought that the Witchery Courses have to be simply a money making affair. I really don't know how they can justify teaching this. After all witchcraft is all about rememberance from previous lifetimes. Loved seeing this beautiful building and the grounds around it with the photos too. You’re right, I don’t know how the people that peddle these ridiculous courses can sleep at night. I hate to see people being scammed like this because that’s what it amounts to.

I value your authenticity. It shines right through. Without graphic details it would be so helpful to share your experience you mentioned. I find hardly anyone talks about backlash or negative effects of spell work. It’s always so positive where in actuality backlash is very real. Learning to mitigate risks is so important. Blessed Be❤
Thank you so much. Yes it certainly is real and it has to be understood before even thinking about any kind of spell work. Even with the absolute purest of intentions - and we’ve said before that Witchcraft is all about the intent - the ripple effects can be devastating. You have to put steps in place to mitigate the possible unwanted effects. It’s easy to go in all guns blazing, especially when you are angry and upset, but that’s also when you are most vulnerable and likely to get it wrong. On the other hand though, in the end it is worth it and it teaches you a very important lesson along the way.

Thank you for another video and for sharing your wisdom. I'll be 50 this year and it's nice to see other ladies in my age group sharing their love of witchcraft. I've been a witch most of my life and I'm a solitary witch. I don't know very many other witches at all, at least not where I'm from in the US.
I love our little community. It has such a warm and nurturing energy. I am so glad you are part of it. I especially love us ladies of a certain age and I have huge respect for those who have spent a lifetime honing their craft, like yourself. I love that you are here - thank you ♥️

Thank you so much for this video! I have paid for courses on tarot, moons, crystals in the past, but recently i had noticed alot of the things they 'teach' are very similar to what i have read in books. I love the spring and autumn seasons and have always used the new and full moon phases. I dont really feel connected to using crystals anymore, is that normal? x
Well I think your craft and practice evolves and changes. Something that you really love at one point might just not do it for you anymore. And I think that's absolutely fine xx
