Samhain Traditions

- Carving turnips for Samhain or Halloween is a tradition that I love to carry out each year. There are other customs and traditions that I embrace at Samhain that I talk about here. Samhain is the Celtic New Year, a time of feasting and celebration, as well as an opportunity to think of our ancestors and take the time to visit with them.

Here is the recipe for the pie!
6oz of shortcrust pastry - 6oz wholemeal spelt flour, 3oz butter, salt and water
1 onion, 1 leek, parboiled potatoes, couple of carrots, turnip from the lanterns, a couple tablespoons of stock, cheddar cheese.
**************
Saute the onions and leek for a few minutes and then throw in the chopped carrots, the drained parboiled potatoes and a couple of carrots. Add the stock and simmer and stir for about 5 minutes. Allow to cool and roll out the pastry covering a greased plate or pie dish with half of the pastry. Add the vegetables and spread over the pie base. Grate a strong cheese over the vegetables and then cover with the rest of the pastry . Brush with egg wash and bake until pastry is brown and crisp. Enjoy with Colcannon, (another Samhain dish made from mashed potatoes and mashed kale).
Enjoy the festival, Samhain Blessings for a very happy New Year!
Many Samhain Blessings to those of you in the northern hemisphere. I am celebrating Bealtaine here in the antipodes and bringing flowers and greenery from the garden into our home. It's strange watching people around me, carving pumpkins! Thank you for sharing your rituals, Terri it's always a pleasure to be invited into your world. Blessings, Toni 🌹🐝
I could listen to this folk wisdom all day. I didn't know about seed-fall or the story behind Jack 'O' Lantern. It was just like being in your kitchen with you. It's a perfect wild and windy Samhain here with swirling leaves and thrashing rain. The clocks have gone back and I'm off to carve my Jack 'O Lantern. Have a wonderful Samhain - you have enhanced mine.
We have the same weather. Thanks so much for your kind comments
I love the advice about the Rosemary and the Elder, especially, and the thought of the smell of "singed turnip". Thanks!
I love that smell! xx
When I was a child in the 1970s, I loved Conan the Barbarian comic books, and a bit later, the Robert E. Howard novels that the comics were based on.
Conan (even in the comic books) used to swear "Macha and Morrigan!" and "Crom!"
My gentle Scottish grandmother, a church-going lady, nevertheless recognized what I was reading, and explained to me a bit about The Mór-ríoghan, and Crom Cruach, and head-hunting traditions among the Gaels.
I was astounded to hear this! I was perhaps eight years old! This was awesome!
Remembering it now, I am still in awe of what my grandmother must have known, and how much she never mentioned in daily life. She didn't try to discourage me from reading these Conan stories. Instead, she guided me towards more scholarly Gaelic/Celtic sources.
She didn't belittle or insult my childhood reading habits, she used them to steer me toward the source material. She was wonderful. 🙂
She was wonderful! You were so lucky to have her. xx
I had no idea turnips could be so big.
They were quite small as I didn't want to break my arm with all the carving 😂
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Ha! That's funny. Turnips are fist sized where I live.
@@LavenderHazelwood We have the large ones (dangerous to cut, almost lost a finger once) and the little ones also. The little ones are called Swedes, although I live in Canada, and still hear that term.
Happy Samhain from Nebraska to the world. I’m calling on the Goddess’s and especially my grandmother and great grandmothers to provide some peace so mote ir be
So mote it be and it is so xx
Ah! This video was posted two years ago, but I'm pleased to see below that you're still watching and commenting.
Lovely video, and I'm just in the perfect mood this year, on the evening of October 29th.
The last time I tried to cut up a turnip, I almost lost a finger. 🙂 I've yet to try carving one into a lantern, but I will!
Thanks, and best wishes for the coming year! From Canada... Liked and Subscribed.
Happy New Year to you too and thanks for subscribing! Hope you hit the bell too as sometimes people don't get the notifications. For the turnip lantern, once you slice off the top, for the lid, you can use a sharp spoon to carve it, less dangerous!😂
Samhain Blessings
Many Happy Returns Carolina xx
Ok this is the 3rd time I've watched this and I love love love your story telling. I feel the tradition of the verbal handing down if stories . Great job! Good history lesson. Giving a purpose and meaning to the things we do really does bring the ancestors back to life.
Wow! Thank you so much! Thrilled that you like it so much xx
Does anyone else wish these videos would never end???
Thank you Richie, such a lovely comment for me. x
Lovely as usual! Very interesting how close this is to the Mexican Day of the Dead--honoring ancestors, the concept that the barrier between this world and the next is "thinner," even setting out food and gifts for the ancestors.
WE are all people at the end of the day, regardless of where we live. I find it fascinating but not surprising that people living in different parts of the world share the same customs.
I don't think I have ever seen a turnip that big. Thank you for the folklore, and Blessed Samhain.
You are welcome! Blessings to you and yours.
Thank you for these teachings! Here for this on October 31, 2023 🌿🎃 🌿
You are so welcome xx
Thank you for sharing this! I so enjoyed watching you patiently carve the turnip while chatting with us. Sharing this with my homeschoolers this week. 🙏🏼🤎🧡
During the development of American culture, we mish mashed Catholic, Celtic, and Roman traditions to create something wholly unique to us, and called it Halloween. It is so tragic that we have destroyed what was beautiful and sacred about all of our holidays with consumer trash. As pumpkins are endemic to the Americas, it makes sense that early traditions were developed from them. I would grow those turnips if I knew the name of them. And I've seen how they shrivel up and look quite grotesque, adding to the thematic impact of the season. Folks do it here with apples. I appreciate your contribution to the tales, for even though I know them, it is so vital that we share them on and on, so they filter through time. People need to remember why we celebrate these times of year, the cycles, the seasons, and honoring the dead. We have no relationship with our ancestors, certainly not at Halloween, and it is detrimental to us all. We must all do what we can to keep our traditions alive, for how else will history recall if not through the passing of tales and the old wisdom?
I absolutely agree, we must keep on telling stories and passing on wisdom of old - that is what helps us to keep connected to our human soul xx
Bless your heart Terri. Thank you.
I have never seen carved turnips before thank you blessed be
This was the Irish tradition xx
What a wonderful explanation of Samhain! THANK YOU! It is so much better then the US Halloween. Enjoy your Samhain there and have a blessed weekend.
Blessings to you too! x
My grandmother always talked about carving turnips instead of pumpkins. And about making and giving away soul cakes. Much of this was like being with her again. I never heard the jacks and the devil story though, or just don’t remember it if I did.
She was a wonderful and beautiful human and I miss her every day even after she’s been gone for decades now. This was such a wonderful time listening to you.
Aww! how lovely that you had such a wonderful grandmother who took time to tell you such things xx
HAPPY SAMHAIN 🎃 🧙 🧹 HERE BRASIL 📸 🇧🇷 😎 👌 🆒
I love this. The cycle of the gardener. The rythem of life, and tending to the soil every season... I don't garden like I used to, but one never forgets that natural pull when the seasons change. Very sweet.
I agree - that seasonal change is very magical as go into a kind of liminal in-between time. xx
Welsh boyo here. You’re a natural storyteller.
Hello Welsh Boyo! Thanks very much!
Samhain blessings, love the Olde ways
Samhain Blessings for a happy new year!
I love these story's it's so facinating you have them all memorized. Your turnup heads are adorable.
Dear Terri, this is undoubtedly a special time. Whether it is celebrated or not, there is something in the air that is different, at least for those of us who believe it to be so. My dear ones who are gone, are accompanying me a lot these days. Even when they are always near me, I can feel that presence more clearly these days, I know that they are here, with me, taking care of me and guiding me in new challenges that are taking place these days. I am glad to be able to feel them and honor them. Blessings to you! Happy Samhain!
It is an honour to remember them especially as you say, in these trying times xx
Whoa! I never even seen a Turnip that large before. Ours here are only the size of an apple…if that 😏… love the storytelling… hope you Enjoyed!
The story telling was awesome! Thank you for the tranquility, peace and wisdom you transmit in your films!
When i was a little boy this is what we used to do, turnips were what we made lanterns out of, and in the middle we put a candle, as we didn't have those tea candles in the 60's, there was a bit of a knack to getting it to set....... My Granny was the answer she was brilliant at everything. (God bless you Granny Keir.xxx i miss and love you.)
I was just thinking about that - about the candle and how you had to search the house for stub small enough😂
Such a lovely, cosy and informative video 🙂❤️ thank you and blessed samhain hope you have a lovely day xxx
Happy Samhain! So lovely to sit at the table and carve turnips with you, and imagining that lovely harvest pie. Such a pleasure!
I enjoyed the parts about soul cakes, setting space at the table and all things remembering and honoring the dead. I'm looking for ways to honor my late grandmother.
These are lovely ways to honour our grandmothers and other ancestors, giving them some time. xx
Thank you so much Terri. I could listen to you all day. You are so full of wonderful knowledge. Blessings to you.
so lovely, thank you! I love this time of year, it's so magical
Thank you!!! Blessed Samhain to you and your family. Much love from Pennsylvania.
Thank you Teri. When you struck that match, I literally smelled it...Blessed be, blessed Samhain.❤🇮🇪🍀
Blessings to you and yours Pamela
WOW. I learned WAY more in these 16min than my whole life about Halloween and Samhain! Thank you!
You're welcome, so glad it was informative for you xx
Beautiful video! I love the legends and lore you share. With affection from Virginia, USA.
Thanks! Glad you enjoy hearing them xx
I spent today thinking of my youngest brother who passed away some months ago and today would have been his birthday. Thanks for a beautiful story to distract my mind away from so many worries and brighten my otherwise depressing and sad sort of day. I love your turnip lanterns, they are beautiful. Thanks for all you do!
Sorry you were feeling a bit sad but very happy to hear you feel cheered up. Blessings to you Lou xx
Could listen to you for hours
I’m a Tudor re-enacter and know so many forgotten traditions you talk about x
Wow! How fascinating. Would love to hear more. I loved watching The Tudor Farm and all the other "Farms" in that series.

That was great. I really enjoyed listening to your stories and folklore tales. I learned a few things about Elderberry, so thank you. Winter will arrive here in a couple of weeks from now so we've all been busy finishing the harvest and preparing for colder days and nights. It seems that summer flew by and autumn has run a close second. With recent rain and wind many trees have lost their golden yellow, brilliant orange and vibrant red leaves now. This morning I watched a whitetail doe just after first light. It frosty this morning. That graceful doe got up out of her bed in the meadow south of my cabin window. A moment later a buck stood up too. As things brightened doe slowly followed buck through a carpet of frosted weeds and ferns. Soon whitetail deer will be breeding here, elk and mule deer are likely finishing their rut now. - - - All those sunflowers out in my garden standing so tall and stately fed at least some small birds on their migration south this year. Snow has covered the mountain peaks in the past week, so winter has arrived in the high country. Thanks for sharing so much with us here. Happy Halloween and have a good winter. Cheers!
What a beautiful picture of Autumn you paint with your words. Blessings to you too.
I love the paradoxical nature of the Jack tale, very skillful storytelling, and you related it very well, I might add :) Here I am in Cape Breton Canada, visiting your table for a spell on Samhain, like a trick or treater.
We'll, I'm off to the next house! :)
Dave
Thanks Dave, have a great Samhain!😀
Thank You Terri I could listen to you for hours...My Mouth Watered as you carved the Turnip, That along with Swede & Parsnips are my favourite vegetables, glad to know you will eat all the inside 🎃⭐🐕🐶🤗💐

🙏
Absolutely love this information on traditional folklore. Thank you Danu!!
So glad you enjoyed it. xx
Well done. Absolutely. Facts and open mind. Discernment is key. ❤
i am so blessed my heritage is from Ireland. Dunmore and Firmanaugh, both of my grandmothers came from each one. love listening and watching your videos ❤️
Many Samhain- Blessings to you ❣️
From Berlin/Germany
Blessings Angelika!
Love listening to your story telling. Ive never seen such large turnips!!! I love them. Cheers from Maryland USA
Thank you for sharing the stories, especially Jack! Blessed Samhain to you and yours Terry ✨♥️✨
Thank you so much for the folklore & history. I didn't know about the soul cakes. Turnips certainly have their own personality, that's for sure. 🧙♀️🎃🌻
Like many North Americans, my heritage is a mix of many different cultures and no one to teach me the stories and traditions of my ancestors, so your videos are really appreciated!
These turnips are wonderful! I live far up north in Scandinavia and we do not have Samhain here so it is very interesting to learn about it. Here we stand on the threshold to the long dark polar night, all we can do is embrace the darkness...
Do you have any festival at this time with Loki - didn't he get fire from or for the gods?? Forgive my poor memory around Scandinavian mythology.
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden No need to apologize! My memory is rather selective too these days. We do not celebrate such a festival. Perhaps they did once...we know so very little these days. But he did get fire from the gods in some old myths. He is a trickster and trouble maker. Disturbing the balance among the old Norse gods. I live very far up north where several cultures meet, as Finnish speaking groups, the kvens and the Sami. This is not the land of Loki and the aesir but of the old Sami gods and goddesses. I have very little knowledge about your gods in my turn. Therefore I find it so inspiring to hear about your culture and folklore. Wish you all the best!
@@henriettanovember4733 I see. I wonder if the Sami have a Samhain equivalent ?
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Not to my knowledge. Today not much is known about their old religion as they where forced to become Christians during the 17th-18th centuries (Not all forced of course some wanted to as they found their way in Christianity ). The Sami did not write themselves and all that is written is by outsiders (many of them missionaries...)The old religion has a lot in common with other indigenous people living as hunter, gatherers and reindeer herders especially far up north. They had several gods/goddesses and shamans. The earth, rivers, lakes and so on was considered holy. The authorities decided the old religion to be devil worship and destroyed all traditions they possibly could (and worse). But somehow I can feel it in my blood...some old memories of how my ancestors once lived and worshipped...Wish you a happy day!
@@henriettanovember4733 thank you for all the info xx have a great day yourself
We carved turnips here in Scotland now everyone uses pumpkins we have a feast here at home and we remember our ancestors and loved ones that we have lost we also lay a plate at our table as well
Blessings 💕💕
Our Gaelic customs are very similar!😀
I’m getting some more inspiration for my upcoming Samhain celebrations, thank you for this lovely vid! xx
Interesting folklore...Thankyou
🎃
Thank you for the interesting Samhain traditions Terry.
Dear Terri, i just want to tell you how much I love watching your videos and to let you know how much peace and comfort they impart to myself and I'm sure many others too.
You have such a lovely presence and it transcends the wavelengths and is so calming and uplifting.
Thankyou for doing this. I hope this will let you know how valuable and halpful your videos are at this present time when we are all encountering such a disturbing time in our lives .
Even your pets are so beautiful and relaxed.
God bless you and yours
Love
Helen
Many blessings to you Helen. I very much appreciate your kind words and I am delighted to hear that you feel a sense of peace and calm. We are living in disturbing times and it is difficult to know what to do. Hearing from other people is lovely for me. xx
Blessings be yours Terri as we welcome and celebrate Samhain. Lovely to hear the folklore stories while watching you carve out your turnips. Memories of times past flood back...me as a child...then my children...now my grandchildren. I hadn't heard the story of children making little cakes and it's sad traditions are being lost as commercialisation takes centre stage. I'll be sharing your video in the hopes of a revival 🤞. In the meantime it'll be cakes all round for any trick or treaters calling at my house tomorrow....bless their little souls! Thank u for sharing Terri 🙏🎃
Thank you for sharing Pat and I think that is a great idea to give the kids good home made cakes instead of sweets that send them all hyper😂 Blessings for a happy new year!
loving these stories, thank you.
I never thought about using turnips , those are so cute ! 🍁🍁🎃🎃🍁🍁🍁🎃🎃🎃🍁🍁
Rosemary is one of my favorite herbs. My grandma has an elder bush at her house. When we go to pick the berries my boys always like to have their faries spend the winter in the bush.
Samhain Blessings! Thanks for sharing about Jack!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR KEEPING THE CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS ALIVE! Such Wisdom
This is one of my favorite video's Love the stories love the wisdom
Thank you Terri. Enjoyed this video and the traditional way of celebratiog, the folk lore and tales.
The turnips you carved are so large. In the U.S. turnips are usually about the size of baking potatoes. Pumpkins and potatoes are indigenous to North America and that's probably why pumpkins are everywhere in October 🎃 I love the way the turnips look too.
So enjoyed this, and watching you carve your way through the turnip, loved hearing the real traditions told by you about Samhain, magical, thankyou Terri .
Thank you so much for this. As a youngster in the South of England, I used to beg my Mum to buy me a swede to carve as pumpkins were nearly unheard of where we were. I remember that smell and it brings back such happy memories. I also loved your stories. Blessèd Samhain to you 🎃🍂
That smell is SO evocative!! I love it.
Thank you Terri for a lovely podcast. Here in Scotland we always make turnip lanterns & never saw pumpkins. Blessings to you.
Same when I was a child.
In the north east of England we used to carve a turnip too, I must have been an adult when I saw a pumpkin for the first time.x
I just found your chanel and wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed this video. I appreciate your approach to plants and magic. I find that your counterparts here in the U.S. tend to be more dramatic, materialstic, and frou-frou about it all, which can be rather grating. It's lovely to see a natural, earthy approach in action. It's a balm :) Thank you!
I know what you mean - way too frou-frou for me. (I never heard that phrase before but I can guess what you mean😂) So glad you enjoyed the film xx
Thank you for sharing. Very interesting. Love the turnips. Take care.
Samhain Blessings to you and your family. The main reason our Ancestors used turnips was the pumpkin from the New World had not came to them yet. Also another apple divination was to twist the stem saying the alphabet letters per twist when it snaps off that is the first letter of your husband to be name. Thankful and blessed due to my Ancestors from both sides of the big water. Take care and may you be blessed. ❤️🍀
Happy New Year!
Thanks for bringing a bit of me childhood back to life. And right as we begin to celebrate Samhain.
You're welcome!
Blessings to you and thanks for this comforting video.

Another lovely video Terri, and thank you for telling the story of the Jack o lantern. Always something to learn listening to you. ❤️
Lovely, blessed be.. thank you.
Samhain blessings 😊 took me back to when my mum used to eat the raw turnip when we carved our Jack o lanterns.🧡
I love nibbling on the raw turnip. It's very tasty!
Thank you, Terri! Many, many Samhain blessings to you and your loved ones. 🍁🍂🌱
A Blessed Samhain season to you! Thank you for sharing the story of Jack, the elder Mother ,the carved turnips and the recipe- think I'll be making the pie tonight with the pieces of our turnips and the vegetables we brought in before the frost. and lots of rosemary.
Enjoy - have a blessed new year.
Happy Samhain to you.
Thank you for that wonderful story about Jack, and also I can get in touch with my Irish ancestors.

You are a wonderful storyteller. Thank you, for sharing Samhain's traditions.
You are very welcome. x
These are the biggest turnips I've ever seen! Wish we could get them this large here in the states. I think they make great gruesome faces, even better than pumpkins!
I think so too.
Happy Samhain! Your stories are lovely and the turnip heads too!

This is such a lovely video, especially the tales about samhain. lovely...thank you
Thank goodness for Pumpkins! I remember doing this with turnips in the 70's (in the NW of England) . Think my mum did most of it - was really hard work! Having said that I may try turnips (or a swede) next year to bring back our traditions rather than American.
Back in the 70s you were just a little kid with no strength. It's very much more satisfying using turnips for a number of reasons
