CDI, is yours AC or DC, well check out this video and this will help determine if you have an AC or DC CDI in your GY6 scooter or buggy. MonsterGY6 tries to make it easier. Your source for all GY6 Performance Parts
And to explain connections on 6 pin CDI, on 4 contact connector is connected ignition coil, and pickup! Sometimes the fourth remaining is connected to side stand (so the engine stops, when stand is down), or to the clutch bell (electronic restriction of speed to 45-50km/h), on the 2 contact connector, colored wire is capacitor charging coil behind magneto, and black is ground wire!
the only way to tell for certain is to look at the stator. If ANY of the coils are wrapped in tape (if it has an exciter coil or 2) then it is most definately an "AC System". Why? you ask? The exciter coil that goes to the ignition coil is an AC voltage generated within the stator. In a "DC System, the voltage that goes to the ignition coil is 12VDC and comes from the battery to the 6 pin on the CDI, and is stored in wait for the coil with the blue wire to tell it to discharge to the ignition coil. Neat, HUH?
If it is a dirt bike with no battery it's AC if it has a Battery Source it is DC size and wire configuration do not matter besides the fact that all bikes create alternating current with their Magneto's and the rectifier regulator changes it to 12v DC
My DR350 has a battery but once started you can remove the battery and all electrics like lights /gauges stop working but the bike still runs ..surely that would indicate the cdi is AC powered no?
AC CDI box needs a spike of high voltage electricity provided by the Stator provided high voltage "charge" coil winding to supply the CDI box with pulses of high voltage needed to charge its internal capacitor before firing then the seperate small Trigger or pulsar coil will "time" the spark delivery. (Both Ac and DC CDI units need this Trigger pulse to time the spark) This high voltage pulse magneto like coil on the motors stator is wound "separately" from the stator units battery charge windings. and has its own connection to the CDI box itself so if a unique lead from the bikes stator to the CDI is present (it may be grounded by both the key or kill switch in some cases) then it is is an AC CDI type,,AC cdi boxes have a "Grounded stop or kill switch circuit,, that is connected to ground when the key is off or the kill switch is on. there will also be no 12 volt power present with the scooter or buggy not running and the key or kill switch on with a charged battery present. A DC cdi box is a Diffrent beast in that it "Also" contains internal electronics that do away with the need for a separate stator Charge coil circuit to deliver the "charging pulse of electricity to the CDI capacitor ,, A DC CDI box instead takes the 12 volts from the battery and charging system and through an internal circuit steps this low voltage up to "charge" the capacitor like circuit in the flash of a camera ,, if you a find a live 12 volt power wire to the CDI box connector with the ignition turned on and the kill switch off its a DC CDI box type this power should be shut off when you turn off the key or engage the kill switch..
I bought your monstergy6 motor mount and did a swap on a chinese scooter. Im not sure if it was originally ac or dc. But anyway, now the swap is done, it runs good. But i have switched my bulbs to led. Like my headlights and taillights and blinkers. They keep burning out. And i have led accents that all burn out after a few days of use. I am wondering if my old 50cc motor was dc and now after the swap the new motor is supposed to be ac. I dont think looking at the cdi size or wires will tell me what it is supposed to be because of the swap and the mixed components. Can you tell me how to test officially or maybe using a multimeter would do it? Thanks
My 250cc hammerhead ss then is DC, but when I disconnect the battery it barley stays on and if you floor it, it dies. So is it DC with a bad stator or AC with a DC CDI?
Hey so I have a 2011 tomos nitro 50 I put a big bore kit in 72cc 47mm to be exact had to bore the case a little took the restrictor washer that was on the variatior it runs great revs good amazing acceleration but as soon as I hit 25 mph it like halts (holds back) if I push it it'll slowly get to 30 mph and then the Kevlar belts will shred what do you think it could be never had this problem before
Hi MonsterGY6 , I have a Trailmaster Challenger 300 and the CDI box broke due to being improperly attached to the frame, I looked online and bought another CDI which has the same connector and installed it , the engine starts and runs but cannot go more than 3000revs approximately, also the muffler turns red which makes me think it is improper timing. If I install the original CDI the engine starts and revs OK but because the connector is broken it accidentally shuts down so I have to go move the connectors and it starts and runs again. The original CDI is 6 pin, the number printed on the box is 250 CC- 2221-150401, the one I bought has no markings. My question is do you offer this model? If no do you know if 250CC-2221-140702 will fit my machine, this is the closest part number I was able to find online. Thanks
great vid. also considering that there are wires from the a/c generator that run to the cdi on my daelim vt 125-- leads me to believe its an a/c cdi. Its also small like the one in the video. Do these gy6 boxes work on daelims??? they look identical
hi all i have a hammerhead twister which runs great. my question is why does my cdi always have power i noticed cause the one i replaced has green light on it
im form holland and i am wandering witch cabel i need to cut tu get more power from my engine i have a ac i tink ( 2 plugs in the 2 end 3 plugs in the 4)
I have a 1970 Honda SS50 4 stroke. Max power at 11,000 rpm. Its currently magneto ignition and 6v electrics. Can I adapt a CDI unit to power it? I can alter wiring. Will the magneto output power an ac unit. If not will 6v from battery power a dc unit? Its points ignition so can I trigger the unit from that instead of pickup? I do have electronics skill if required. Thanks
Hi there, very interesting your vid, I have a performance cdi on my atv but it has an extra red wire coming out of it (additionally to the 2 plugs thay you are showing here). I just rewired everything but can't figure out were that red wire is supposed to be connected to. If you need a picture I will gladly e mail it to you.
I bought a new CDI for my Boatian retro 50cc scooter. The old CDI connector has 5 pins, 3 up and 2 down.(that leaves an empty spot in the middle..) My problem is that the new CDI has 2 pins up and 3 down, so it wont work. What can i do? do you think it will work if i switch 2 of the wires?
Hi I have a beeline veloce gt 50 and I was wanting to know if me moped was ac or dc I have tired a ac cdi unit however it didn't work but in the video it says my moped is ac because it has 2 wires going in to the 2 pin plug. So I don't know what to do, can you help me???
hey.. i was just planning to get a new cdi for my scooter, and i was wondering how to fir it .. ( i pretty much know nothing ) would be great if you could give me a tip or two :P ty
hey can u please tell me how to wire a 6 pin cdi to my 7 pin yamaha ybr/ybx/yd 125 it has a 4 pin connector a 2 pin connector and a seperate black wire
well, all CDI's are AC, because, behind magneto are 6 electromagnetic cores! 4 of them are alternator, 2 of them are coils for charging capacitor inside CDI! So, tell me, how can CDI be DC, where you will get voltage enough to charge capacitor?? You cant, if you rapidly tap wires connected on ignition coil, on 12V battery, you get no spark, voltage must be way higher! btw. scooter can run without battery connected, nor alternator connected. cheers!
Simple you got a "name brand" with dealer support you can ask them or search the forums or a repair manual. The guessing and matching is for the generic GY6 with no dealer support or parts lists to go by.
Hi tank you 4 your great video, can you please help me if you can or you know, where the CDI location on two stroke scooter Sym Fiddle version 1 from 27/09/1999 tank you also a Maine turns on carburettor air screw tks Best Regards: Vinnie BERENGUER

One sure way to tell,is to turn on your ignition and if you have power going to the wire that connects to the two plug its dc
I found that the 2 wire set up on the AC units will show continuity between the two leads, as to where the DC boxes will not
Richard Castillo pretty short, technical and explicative... Thans!!!
which pins are the lead pins?
if this helps u, ur a saint.
cause theres no way to tell. they all plug together. i also have a large cdi box and its ac
This rocks! Thank you so much for your help in clarifying this

by mistake (because they have the same connectors) i pluged an ac CDI in a dc scooter and i fried it :( thanks forma the video
What did you need to fix?
Mine has 3 & 2 wires so it's AC. Thanks 4 video.

Good day i just wanna ask what is suzuki molà 150 cdi. Is it ac or dc drive?
very informative. thanks!
on a two cylinder engine do have too use both ac and dc cdi boxes thanks brooooooooooo
i have a tao tao 125cc 2012 cheetah and need a cdi i know it a smaller looking one anyone have any clues witch one i would need
the other wire in the 2 pin plug is the engine stop wire so how does that mean theyre ac or dc
Hi,Steven, That's good way to know the different,
But you can show the wiring diagram
That's better!!
oooooooooooo

Really easy, simply unplug the old one and plug in the new one. It can only plug in one way.

i just got an cdi but the connectors are diff. the one i bought is a blue ac fired. i was thinking of cutting the wires an use butt connectors
hi all i have a hammerhead twister which runs great. my question is why does my cdi always have power i noticed cause the one i replaced has green light on it

You cannot just go by wires. Just burnt up an AC cdi going by this advice. Use a volt meter to test.
What terminals are you testing for AC or DC? Is it the two wire plug?
why cant i just cut a wire i have 2 cdi's witch wire i need to cut?
hello do you know type of cdi for bolwell jolie 2005 . thanks pls.

I have Sym Symphony ST 50 4T, 2015. The engine type is XS1P37QMA-2. Which CDI should I order?
Simple you got a "name brand" with dealer support you can ask them or search the forums or a repair manual. The guessing and matching is for the generic GY6 with no dealer support or parts lists to go by.
I get information from my local repair service that Symphony ST 50 4T does not have CDI anymore but some kind of ECU because an engine is EURO3.
That looks correct. Check ebay for a better price on the ECU.
hi my name is erik . i have one cuestion for you?
