I've been using a Storm Mix as a 2 hander with 16mph speed n higher rev rate. I've missed so many 10 pins by a board or 2 because of the tail end hook that I'm gonna buy a plastic ball to see if that helps my game.

Urethane. I have been using a pitch black for spares since 2012. I like it, more control, and versatility over a dedicated spare "plastic" ball. Looking at your throw, I would say the same, urethane gives you more versatility within your arsenal.

Hi Luis, how are you? I am will be playing my very first league with some friends starting at the end of August and for me I need to make more of my spares my other bowling balls my strike balls are good for center spares but not for the corners either I gutter because they have too much hook or don’t stop in time. They hook out to sea. So I need something a lot straighter. Did you say that they don’t make that plastic spare anymore so if I would go traditional spare, what would you suggest from Storm? Also if I am going to choose your thing urethane should I go pitch black or IQ 78 U? Like you said, I don’t wanna take up an extra ball in the bag. Thank you take care. Keep making great Bowling videos.

I use a Black Widow Viz A Ball, plastic with an asymmetrical core. Helps playing straight when needed, but has the core needed to play when dry lanes or high friction exists.

For tournaments I've been using a White Mix for spares. For league I've been using a resin ball (usually my strike ball). I feel for league I can throw straight enough for spares. Plus I feel using resin for spares can help with my spare accuracy hitting my target. For tournaments the shot can be tricky & before I have tried resin or Urethane for spares but struggled at times with them. So spare ball for tournaments it is.

I gave myself two months to get used to throwing a Purple Hammer at spares after using a plastic ball for years for all the reasons listed in the video. I just could not get used to it. The differences were small, but they were enough to where I would have to adjust my targeting a couple boards right, but then one out of every dozen or so would skid through to the gutter and I just realized that having to leave a ball in the car for tournaments is a small price to pay for peace of mind when shooting at corner pins

I use a dedicated spare ball and it in no way prevents me from having other balls in my arsenal. Most tournament bowlers roll in with multiple bags and have a good idea of what balls are going to work for them on a given pattern or condition.
The pro's are many. Regardless of pattern or house I may be bowling in, I know that my spare ball is going to do the same thing on ALL of them. It is going to go straight.
People need to do what works for them rather than what some pro's do because they do not all use eurathane balls for spare balls.
In a nutshell, do what works for you, not what you saw some pro doing just for the sake of saying that you saw a pro doing it.

I do feel like the 78U won in this video. It picked off more sole 10 pins than the plastic did and the gutter was user error.

i would say do this same challenge on lanes that are broken down meaning several games have been played, i tend to stuggle when lanes are dried out on the side. I throw a plastic ball i have improved on making my 10 pins but i think seeing how the urethane does on drier lanes could give you a more real picture. i tend to leave more 10 pins when the lanes dry out.

Pitch Black for spare ball, all the way. No probs
Let it shine up and it works awesome for spares and later in blocks for strike ball.

I personally use a Pitch Black for my right side spares, The benefit for me is if I kinda over throw for a 10 pin , the Urethane has enough teeth to keep the ball on the lane. With the 3,6,10 having the benefit to slightly hook it is more reassuring for me to know I’ll cover the spare.

I've tried a couple of times, over the years, to use a spare ball but just couldn't make it work. Urethane worked for while but, eventually, just switched to reactive at all spares. That being said, a spare ball will be in the trunk of the car for long blocks where the lanes really get burned and I may need to fall back to the spare ball.

Team spare ball. The high friction I bowl on and my rev rate I feel better about a spare ball. I do still flatten my hand for the corner so maybe wouldn’t be totally necessary since when I’ve done that with reactive it does go straight.

I like the dedicated spare ball. For corners it doesn't matter as much when you can flatten and keep it in the oil, but if you throw it at other spare attempts (especially certain splits) the difference in coverstock matters.

I should probably get a spare ball, but I'm not even sure which brand or ball is best. I like the covers of some of the 900 Global White Dots, Pyramid Paths, and Brunswick T-Zones. The Hammer Axe Purple looks nice, too. Or even the Honey Badger. So, which is best (especially for a lefty)? Honestly, I always use whatever ball I was just throwing. For example, I throw my Rhino black, gold, and red (not so good with it, though), my Brunswick OG Infinity, and my Brunswick Perfect Mindset. The Infinity is the most fun to use/watch followed by the Perfect Mindset. Going to try my Track Theorem when I get it next week.

Enjoyed the vlog! Glad to see that you have gotten the 10 pin skill set in your game. After 27 years out of bowling, I am still struggling with 10 pins (60% makes). I am using a T-Zone plastic. My problem is just staying behind the ball with a straight arm swing and a positive attitude. It is the only spare that I still have negative thoughts enter my brain during the approach. It is similar to having the yips in baseball.

I'm gonna say you've mastered the Plastic. I did the same, but the whole ball and chain thing started to ring true in the league I'm in. There's a TON of plastic down the lane, so I'm bringing a lot of different pieces to try and find a solution, no cigar yet. Long story short i practiced throwing straight with my reactive, i can even throw my big pieces straight now. I also throw straight at everything now, hooking is not allowed for me. My average has taken a hit but when my average jumps I'll be better for it.

I bowl on the old wood at milwaukie bowl home of pba hall of famer Dave husted and my league is 2 hours after the league before and what we get is left over from the league before and we don't know what we are coming into week to week and some weeks we have no one bowl on our set so we have fresh oil but 99.9 percent of the time is burn and 2 seasons ago I got a Geico viz-a-ball same you would see on TV from 2007-2008 season and I decided to sand it to 500 grit on a whim and I fell in love with it sanded . And for the rest of the season before last and all last season I threw it. And I made money and immpressed ej tackett and Marshal Kent with it in the jackpot classic at the Orleans last year and they said they haven't seen any one hook a plastic ball like I can and this year I am taking it to the jackpot classic again and Kyle troup and ej tackett and Marshal Kent are going to be there and I am going to have them sign it and come back and have dave husted sign it and put it on display and have her in permanent retirement. I prefer plastic even sanded plastic because I have more trust with plastic then with urethane. ( On a side note I am looking into getting my hands on a pitch black for a new urethane ball would a 4×4×2 layout work because it is a strong high flaring layout . I don't know my pap but I am a speed dominant lefty up the boards more speed then revs.

  • @erici9025
    @erici9025 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Practice is the key to success with either. Most do not bowl on the volume the pros do and will likely have to throw the urethane harder to keep online for many spares which creates accuracy issues vs plastic which allows bowlers to stay more relaxed and roll the ball at their spares. Ask Norm or any pro how many bowling balls they are taking to tournaments. One more for spares is going to be one too many??? Same for league bowlers who have no issue taking 6+ to leagues. If you take 6 to league and one is plastic, at least one ball in your bag is guaranteed to help your game when you can't figure out why you cant "carry" with the other five.

When it comes right down to it, I don't care what a pro uses for a spare ball. They could punch holes in a pumpkin and throw it accurately.
After a 20 year hiatus, I'm changing from 16# to 15# equipment. Building an arsenal from scratch is costly. So I'm keeping it down to 4 balls. In this situation, I'm considering the Hammer Axe Resin for spares, and can use it for burnt up lane conditions.

Growing up, I didn’t have a spare ball. My junior bowling coach stressed the importance of picking up my spares. My average increased by 30 pins from 1 season to the next, just by picking up my spares. I don’t see coaches in my area, stress spares nowadays. Kinda sad.

I use a plastic strike ball. I have high revs (400+) with low speed 12 mph (due to age and injuries).
I actually have an arsenal of 4 different plastic balls in my bag.

When I bowled 1 handed, I could use any ball for spares ala Norm Duke. Now that I'm 2 handed (and lefty), I absolutely need a plastic ball for the left corner spares.

I have a Pitch Black that I was using for 10 pins. Occasionally, it would find a bit of friction just enough to miss to the left. I have since purchased a plastic Storm Ice for 10 pins, and I'm much happier with that. Unless I really blow the shot, the ice is dead on. I prefer the plastic due to being more consistent and predictable.

Luis great Vid! I think the ULTIMATE test to your theory is to simply dedicate a league night to only throwing the 78U as your spare ball. Throwing only at a 7-pin or 10-pin I dont think is the best test on where an advantage may be with Plastic VS Urethane. Whats the results when you use the 78U for shooting the 4-7, or the 6-10. What even happens when you shoot the 2-4-7, OR the
3-6-10. HOW does your mental strategy game plan adjust when you now rely on a ball that has more teeth in it, compared to a plastic. Do you have an increased tendency to "straighten out" all of your spares. Lets watch you bowl 1-game on a house shot, and your only spare ball is urethane. Then you bowl 1-game on a sport shot, and your only spare ball is urethane. Now THATS the type of results that I would love to watch!!! I'm currently in transition from plastic to urethane spare ball right now. And im experiencing the "Mental" dependency conflict. Plastic spare ball I've got 35yrs experience. Getting over that hurdle is bigger then actually throwing urethane.

Luis, based on the video you can use either ball for spares. The one bad shot with the urethane ball obviously would have missed with the plastic ball. 19 out of 20 isn't too bad.

I have a Storm Ice for those right lane spares, but when it comes to a spare in the middle or the left, I just hook at it with my Crypto. I have a Purple Hammer, but I rarely find any use from it anymore. I find using Urethane for spares to be a risky maneuver, since you have to get it outside for it to hook... If you accidentally throw inside and keep it in that oil it's gonna miss.

I think a better comparison would be shootin the 7 pin?
I use a Tropical with a very short Pin. That ball doesn't flare much anyway, and if you put the Pin close to the axis, it really goes straight. And you can still use it as a strike ball for those scorched conditions where urethane will burn out too early.

When I first started bowling I used a rubber ball and we only used one ball for everything. Even when I moved to urethane, again same ball used for everything.
Once resin came out, I was not able to use it for spares on the right since it would hook away, so I would use a urethane ball for spares.
Once I started bowling in sport leagues it quickly became apparent that a plastic ball that goes perfectly straight was vital for all spares.
Sport patterns are treacherous and using a ball that can hook away from what you are shooting at is a guarantee of missed spares.
I have slower speed as a senior and cannot throw the ball 30 mph at my spares like these pros, so plastic is vital.
In order to keep my Sport game tuned up I also use the same plastic ball for all spares on house shots too.
I would stick with plastic Lou.

I use urethane for spares and I've never used a plastic for spares. My first ball was the blue hammer in the 90s. I kept it as my spare ball for years until I got another one. I got the purple when I got back into bowling after a decade off. It's just how I always came up. I use my urethane for spares and I flatten my hand for 10 pins and I can put a little hook in it for 3 6 10s or splits. I'm the most comfortable with a urethane ball in my hand.

i think for 1 handers its better to use urethane cause its easier to create less hook with a thumb
im a 2 hander who is on a low budget, and i use pitch black to spare, i use a forward roll to spare and minimise urethaen hook, but ive come to realise that for 2 handers its prob best to use spare ball because you can use your natural normal release which is more consistent, cause there have been times ive just missed completely due to a forward roll not being comfy on 2 handed form

    • @LuisNapoles
      @LuisNapoles  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

yea I agree that two handers and high rev rate players should def use plastic

  • @seanliff2505

I use a urethane because it doesn't take up a slot in my ball bag for a one dimensional ball. I can use the urethane on dry lanes, outside shots and keep it straighter for all my spare shots. But definitely think it's a preference and you need to go with what you are comfortable throwing.

Ive never had a spare ball, always thrown my performance ball harder and straight, but when I got a purple hammer a few years ago, started using it for spares. Much better with it. Never miss a 7 pin( lefty) anymore. And i bring it to tournaments and league anyway, as a first shot option on shorter harder patterns.

I just went to using a dedicated spare ball last month for the first time. I was having difficulty with my normal ball being consistent on both sides. The spare ball has helped a ton. Actually, one night I hurt my hand and ended up using the plastic ball for the third game and shot 204 with it. I haven’t yet started competing in tournaments so not sure if urethane is something I need for house shots during weekly league, but something I’ve been thinking about. Thanks again Luis for covering topics that so many of us are thinking about. Keep up the good work.
