Breaking down the YOYO technique to help increase revs

  • The yoyo technique is a way to think about your bowling release that helps you maximize your rev rate. That said, some struggle with it. In this video, Keith breaks this technique down into 2 parts to help focus in on what to work on. NOTE: This technique is hard for some to master. We will be exploring alternate ways to help with the release in future videos as well. #bowling #baldbrosbowling #baldbrothersbowling #viseinserts #yoyotechnique
    Corrections:
5:12 To avoid damaging your elbow, do NOT snap straight, and do NOT try this with a heavier ball.
5:51 Again, start with a very light ball, even a football or softball, and do NOT snap the elbow straight. Do NOT do this with a heavier ball.
12:24 Not only is it harder to practice that motion in 2 separate parts with a heavier ball, you should NOT do this with a heavier ball to avoid injury. Practice with a light ball, then only do the full motion with your ball after you get used to the motion with a lighter ball.

PLEASE NOTE: Snapping your elbow, especially with a heavier ball, can potentially cause you to damage your elbow. Corrections have been noted at 5:12, 5:51, and 12:24 to point out that any practice of the first part of this technique should be done only with no ball or a very light ball as I have done in the video. Only proceed to your normal weight ball AFTER you feel you have a smooth transition of the entire motion. Do NOT snap the elbow straight.

This is the best example I’ve seen of the yo-yo technique. I’m 58 and have recently mastered the yo-yo. Once you do it it’s like riding a bike. It took me about 3 months to figure it out. It seems silly now that I struggled with it. It definitely helps to work on strengthening your wrist first. My wrist was sore until I built up the strength. My league average jumped from the mid 150’s to the high 180’s almost over night. The one thing I do miss is my high handicap! lol.

Keith, thank you so much for the breakdown. The visuals and demonstrations were the pieces I was missing from all other videos. When you demonstrated the straight arm swing with the follow through, I knew from the ball rotation and rev rate that this is exactly what I am doing wrong. I have now gotten my ball speed too high for my current rev rate to be useful, so I sincerely appreciate this breakdown and steps to work on. Now, if I could only install a complete bowling center in my backyard, I would be golden.

I wanted to share something that helped me practice my one-handed hand positioning better than anything. I purchased a $30 foam bowling ball from Amazon. It only weighs 1.5 pounds but is the same diameter as a bowling ball. I was able to work on my swing and the position of my hand for a long period of time without the fatigue that even a low weight house ball caused.

Only wish I had seen this one before I started trying it. I now know the key is to start with a lower weight ball and progress up in weight as you become more proficient. What I did to my elbow was hyperextend it, which will heal.

Just picked bowling up again this year and have been trying to fix my release as I don't have much rev rate. This shows exactly what I was missing and helped to better understand the yoyo that everyone talks about, but doesn't show how to practice it. I now can see that I am missing the bent elbow and bent wrist at the top of my backswing and how to "throw" the ball down to start the yoyo effect, which is what I was missing. Bending your elbow is not so easy if you haven’t been doing it, I noticed that when you went to use your regular ball, you couldn’t bend your elbow so I think cupping your hand and uncupping the ball at release is good enough if you can’t bend your elbow, which is what I do and it’s effective. As a competitive golfer for more than 30 years, I would say, do NOT tell people that you bend your lead arm elbow at the top of your backswing, you should NEVER do that! .. A good golf swing does NOT bend your lead arm elbow at the top of your backswing. In fact your lead arm should never bend at all until after you have struck the ball. But your analogy of "casting" is spot on! .. in both golf and bowling, one of the most difficult things to train your brain NOT to do, is to "pull from the top". Allow gravity to do most of the work for you at the beginning of the downswing, which also makes it easier (in bowling) to get your wrist cupped and get your elbow bent before the release, then apply your power for the throw and release (applies to both golf and bowling).
Great video presentation though. Great explanation of the Yo-Yo release. It took me some time to finally "get it" when I began learning this release. Once the lightbulb comes on though, and you feel it, then it becomes much easier to really learn it .. and .. practice, practice, practice !!!

Many shops like to put pitch (direction hole is drilled) in the thumb simply based on which hand you use. This can be a huge hinderance if it's not correct and force the hand to turn over to clear the thumb. Make sure you know what your pitches are.

Dose anybody have any tips to make it easier to slow my feet down, and laying it down in the same spot?

    • @baldbrothersbowling
      @baldbrothersbowling  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

Often times when targeting is off, it can be an issue with timing. Nailing down timing with repetition can help with targeting. Without seeing you bowl, here is what I suggest. Start with 1-step drills. Don't "throw" the ball, but ease into a nice roll. Keep your feet together at the line all what thru the back swing until you feel the back swing hit the peak. In a recent Brad and Kyle video, they refer to this as the weightless zone where the ball is momentarily weightless as it moves from going back to starting forward. When it hits that weightless zone, that is when you start your slide step so your step and your downswing start at the same time. Again, don't heave the ball, but let gravity bring the ball down, and let the ball ROLL off your hand. Do this over and over and over again until you feel like it becomes natural. This may take you several practices of JUST this over an over. Eventually, when it feels natural, progress to 2-step where feet are together, start the push away, and as the ball passes your knee, take the 1step. You will land that step about when your back swing hits it's peak, and you continue into the 2nd step (slide step), just like before. Do that over and over. When you get these 2 steps down, move to a third step where your push away but then take that 1st step right after you extend the pushaway, 2nd step as it passes your leg, 3rd step when you hit the weightless zone. Then you move to 4, start push with 1st step, 2nd step as you finish push away, 3rd as it passes your leg, 4th as you hit the weightless zone. If you like 5-step, then you can add the 5th step where the 1st step gets you moving, but you don't move the ball until the 2nd step.
By breaking this down this way and starting 1-step, you can slow yourself down, and focus on rolling the ball, not throwing the ball. That can help you become a bit more consistent in targeting. I hope this helps.

The motion requires going from cupped to uncupped right at the release point. I am not teaching them to cup the whole way. This video is from the top of the backswing forward only. You can be relaxed from the pushaway all the way to the peak of the backswing. But once you start the forward motion into your slide step, that is when you start the cup. Then at the last moment to start rolling the ball off your thumb, that is when the uncupping starts. I cup the whole way, but that is just what I do and am not teaching that. That is why I focused this video on the downswing. I will be showing slow motion videos of several pros that highlight exactly this.

    • @baldbrothersbowling

Absolutely. The pinky shouldn't have much impact on this. I think it is a tiny bit easier to get the hand inside the ball with a tucked pinky, but it is negligible. That's really a comfort thing. I used to tuck, but started rubbing on my pinky knuckle, so I switched and while it took a little to get used to how it felt, it didn't really change anything in what I do. • @baldbrothersbowling

From pushaway to backswing, yes. Once you get to the peak of the backswing and you start the downswing, that is when the elbow bend a little. Regarding 2 handers, most (I would have to see video) automatically have the bent elbow and bent wrist as the ball lays on their forearm a little. Ideally, as you start the slide/plant step and the downswing, you should start to straighten the arm and roll the ball off your hand as you straighten the wrist right at release. I have seen many who do their arm over the top which you don't want to do. Keep your elbow on and your hand behind or even inside the ball a little. As you straighten the wrist and roll the ball off your hand, you will be turning your hand over some, but don't roll all the way over. Best suggestion is to watch some 2-hander slow motion release videos, and pay close attention to the position of the elbow and hand when it reaches full backswing, and what they do as they start the downswing and on thru the follow thru. I hope that helps.

Does the wrist collapse while the thumb is still in the ball or is after the thumb has cleared? I notice for me when I try to un-cup before my thumb exits my thumb hangs and my revs go down significantly.

It is before, but timing has to be great. Right at the end of uncupping it will start to come off the thumb. It is very quick like a whip and takes some practice to get down. This is why I like trying with a very light ball first. Thanks for the question.

Ohh man. This could really get someone hurt. Too long of a list of corrections for comments. Stay tuned for the reaction on the Breakpoint podcast where we break this video down. I truly hope none of the 16k people that watch this hurt themselves. Im assuming someone taught you this was. But its important to have an understanding of the fundamental principles of the release and why you do certain things at at certain times. At no point is lifting involved. You also do not have to cup your wrist throughout your swing. As for the rest it will be on the podcast. If you want to watch it go to Bad Bad Bowling 101. If you need help learning about the philosophy and science behind the release we are glad to help. Also Jr. Raymond and The Brad and Kyle Channels both have excellent tutorials on how to use the yo yo release properly without risk of injury. I hope you think about some of these things and do a bit more research on biomechanics, inertia and physics. That will help you understand the release and why it’s a positive thing for bowlers. First, let me say that I appreciate that you normally like the content. I do appreciate that and all feedback. Regarding this video, I see the flaws, and let me explain where I was coming from. There are many videos on the yoyo, and I see so many comments from those who don't understand it, don't like it, or cannot do it. My attempt was to peel it back into sections. The intent isn't to snap the elbow as much as I show, and I can see now how one could do that, especially with a heavy ball, which is why I start (and suggest) starting with a light ball to get the motion down. My objective is always to look at and explain things in a way that might help those that struggle with many typical tutorials. As I said, I can see how it could cause issues if done wrong, and I will look at seeing if I can modify the video when I get home from my regional. Regarding your podcast, I am fine with you dissecting my video and correcting issues. I simply ask, as a coach myself who is trying to improve our sport and has helped MANY improve, that you do so by focusing on the video itself, and not having it be an attack on me specifically. @@baldbrothersbowling Looking forward to it...While there is no doubting the role rev rate plays in the "modern game", not everyone can do the yoyo release. This can be because years of ingrained muscle memory of not releasing the ball this way, or because, as in my case, I need to wear the support. California Bowling products sells an expensive adjustable wrist support which uses a system of springs and tensioners to allow the support to cup and uncup, but when I tried it, it fell short of truly allowing the yoyo release.
The wrist support question usually morphs into the larger questions of are more revs the only path to higher bowling scores, can revs be generated if you wear a support, and if not, what alternatives does a lower rev bowler have, to remain equally competitive and hold their own.
I am curious to see how you will address these questions and look forward to your vid.

I will say this if your going to teach this technique I would recommend you getting insurance. If people follow your instructions they will hurt themselves like blowing out elbow. Not that we have cover that step one you don’t have to cup your wrist to get under the ball nor should you recommend it. To get Uber the ball is as easy as just bending the elbow. Second you don’t need to force your arm down nor do you ever need to drive the ball down into the ground when bending the elbow you should think of it like landing a plane. At no point are you ever driving the ball down into the ground, and definitely not locking the elbow it will blow out the elbow. Last you don’t at any point rip up at the end 😂😂😂 if you bend the elbow on the way down “entering the dead zone” that will put your hand under the ball. Then the thumb exiting the ball first will allow your fingers to wrap around the ball. So the goal is to bend the elbow the more bend the higher the revs entering the dead zone. Having your have “elbow” and hand with inside positioning. Existing the ball thumb first fingers wrapping around the ball on release. Smh simple “please don’t hurt anyone”” else that is
