    I appreciate this video so much. I started bowling again last summer after several years away. My doctor and PSO both said that I needed to drop down in weight. I dropped down to 12#. When I would post questions or comments on forums regarding new balls the reaction was always dismissive or ridiculing because I wasn't throwing a "man's weight". So many people thought they were experts and told me I was wasting my time, and money, when I bought my Madness because of the core. I stopped posting and asking questions on the forums. I don't have delusions of being the next Weber, Roth, or Anthony. I just want to enjoy myself and have fun with my child. I hope some of the "experts" out there see your video. Thank you for this, and all you do, Nick

      I feel u 💯! I have psoriatic arthritis and bowled scratch for years but have been sidelined in the last few years because it just got worse and worse. I'm on my 4th biologic and on the verge of taking my left leg below the knee because of the pain. I'm a golf pro, and it's heartbreaking to me that I'm not able to play as much as I used to. I am a master fitting pro as my job, but at least I still play to a 4 handicap and try to play a "few" times a year. I'm determined to bowl again after my 900 global split 360 degrees sitting in my club room for a couple of years. Point is... I went to a 14-lb ball and was given crap for it because I'm a big dude, but there is so much more to it than just being able to "handle" a bigger ball. I rolled 16lb balls for years and years. I am really strong, but if I tried to roll that, i would fall over. Keep on keeping on! 14, 13, 12 whatever ❤

      Do what's right for you my bother! I just started bowling again as well. I bought a 13#. And it's the shit. Now I'm ordering a 12#er for the days I'm feeling not so... Have fun and mostly pick up your spairs. I have 13 outings (3 games each outing) with the the 13#er and have a 144 average. I can just get "better!" Got in the 170's five times and 180"s twice. I'm stoked and having fun. Just need to pick up more spares!!! Shout out to BrunsNick, thank you dude! Love your presentation.

      I also dropped down to 12lb bowling ball. I bowl very well with it. I don't struggle anymore like I did with 14lb. My arm doesn't get tired, and control it fine with 12lbs. Bowling is not a macho thing. Bowl with the weight one is comfortable with. That's all that matters.

    It tells us seniors we should not feel ashamed to use 13 lbs as we won't lose performance and may actually gain a different type of performance.
    13 lbs had way more backend than the 15 lb ball. This makes sense as the same super responsive coverstock has less weight to deal with and was able to move the ball left faster and harder once it saw friction.

      I'm in my late 60's and my ball speed isn't what it used to be. At one time I was speed dominant. Now the down lane ball speed is measured at 11 mph. Messengers are a thing of the past and blowing a 5 into a 10 (I'm a lefty) is rare. I'm tossing weaker equipment with long pin to PAP distances in order to get as much length as possible to compensate. Also worth noting is I have a 14 lb. plastic spare ball that travels between 13-14 mph when I use it on left corner spares, so it stands to reason I'd have a similar ball speed with my first ball if I dropped the weight from 15 to 14 lbs. It stinks getting old - everything hurts now.@@brunsnick

    • @BowlerJ1
      @BowlerJ1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@brunsnick Nick, I was wondering if you could revisit the 13 lb. test by throwing the ball more slowly. You throw the ball at 17-18 mph. At this speed there may not be a discernable difference in hitting power between equipment weighing 13 and 15 lbs. To be fair you would need to throw the 15 lb. ball as well but, if you could achieve a down lane ball speed of 11 mph with both balls, we might be able to see if there is a difference in hitting power between both pieces of equipment. Thanks.

    Historically I have always played a straighter shot, kind of the old school "down and in" and, over the last few years I have struggled with ball overreaction and overall arsenal over/under, because when I move right (Im a lefty) accuracy issues creep up. So I've tried everything on this house shot, from polished asym pearls, to urethane, to using new coatings etc etc. The biggest difference Ive made was dropping from 16lb down to 14lb. Im currently throwing a 14lb TNT Explode hit with a dull 3000, and it allows me to control the ball speed more consistently.

    I had an injury and had to drop from #15 to #12, and my average actually went up quite a bit. I was able to generate more revs and speed while also being more consistent and under control.
    I think it is also important to take into account the effects of fatigue on the arm when comparing the different weights when bowling a block of games vs. just 1 game.
    I have rebuilt my strength after my injury and am stronger than before my injury, so I moved back up to #14. I have no plans of ever going back to #15 even though I am physically stronger now.

    Seems pretty clear from your data that the "generic" core doesn't show a lot (or any) performance drop-off. So that makes me wonder: does this mean that of the extra fancy cores in heavier balls (like the huntsman - where we hear about how innovative and amazing it is) aren't actually as important as we're told that they are? If these results can be achieved with a simplistic generic core, what's the advantage to all of the highly technical cores that we receive?

    • @brunsnick
      @brunsnick  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I bowled in 2 leagues using a 14 lbs Hammer Black Widow. However, mid Feb (2024) I had a tear of the medial meniscus in my left knee (my throwing leg) while practicing one day; didn’t need surgery. However, my orthopedic instructed me to skip on bowling 26 wks to allow my knee to heal. Fast forwarded, my knee healed to the point where I was able to join a league this fall. Problem is I can no longer throw my Black Widow which I had a 191 & 201 avg. in 2 different leagues because it puts too much strain on my injured knee. So I bought a 13 lbs Brunswick Ethos. The Ethos will slowly hook but with no driving force through pins and less pin action. Would the 13 lbs Hammer Effect hit the pins hard like my 14 lbs Black Widow? I was thinking about trying the 13 lbs Hammer Effect.

If you are so hell-bent on impressing your friends with your strength drop down on the lane and give me 50 pushups. As for me, I'll take the higher scoring and an arm I can still use when I go home. As a comparison, take ice hockey, one of the most demanding sports. Are the sticks getting heavier as you get to higher skill levels? Absolutely not. I bought a 14# and feel like I drop it a lot. It feels very heavy at the bottom. I have so much more control with the 13# but get so much more pin action with the 14#. I almost bought a 14# Effect but decided to watch some more reviews. Your's popped up. So glad it did. I guess I should stick with 13#. My question is I was thinking about the top of my bag with an extreme envy and maybe adding a widow 3.0 or envy tour solid as a benchmark. Would that work well as arsenal in your opinion? I do also plan on ordering this hammer effect but I don't know where it will fit in that arsenal other than maybe taking the place of the hazmat? Would the arsenal be from top to bottom. Extreme envy, hazamat or effect,then benchmark either widow 3.0 or envy tour solid, then nu hammer. Would that be accurate?

    I guess this is more of a curiosity, but would the lower weight core make any difference in the 15lb weight compared to the normal core that is used in the heavier weights? Is this even something that could be shown off? I guess my inquiry is, would it make any difference between the higher performance cores? From my point of view, the coverstock seems to carry a majority of the weight here. Am I wrong with this assessment? Or is there actual scientific proof that the weirder looking cores do a better job of rev-ing up the ball?
    With that being said, I guess I've been on the fence of lowering ball weight due to the core differences. This has put a new light on that fence. • @brunsnick
      @brunsnick  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You’d have to adjust the size of the core for heavier weights. Otherwise, you’d have to make the outer core material denser and that would lower the differential too much. Dense “weird” cores create asymmetry and differential, which equates to more track flare potential.

    I wonder if the carry is less affected because you throw more revs than the average bowler? I throw it about like you, but less MPH, so obviously a few less revs. I found that a 14lb didn't carry as much as 15 for me. Started back bowling last year after 10 years off for injuries/surgeries/etc, and figured I'd go down to 14 because it wouldn't matter much, and it might help my shoulder and arm, which both have issues.
    Well, I got most of my form back, at least enough to score, and proceeded to beat the pocket to death for weeks with my 2 new 14lb balls. Beautiful pocket hits, and I'd leave the entire back row over the course of the night, every week.
    Finally, I had an old 15lb Jigsaw Trap that was my last 15lb I got before I quit. Always thought it was a turd back then, didn't like it, but I pulled it out one night since it didn't hook as much as my new stuff. (I had the weight hole filled, no other changes)
    Boom, boom, boom, my carry came back. Kept going back and forth with the newer 14lb stuff, but somewhere in the 2nd game, I'd get frustrated with the carry and switch to it, and I'd score better.
    Finally talked myself into just going with it from the get-go during summer league this summer, and proceeded to average 220 or so for the last 6 weeks. (I wasn't bowling that great, either, I was just scoring better)
    Gave my kids the 14lb balls and drilled a couple of new 15lbs balls.
    So after all that anecdotal evidence, my question, or maybe my thought is, maybe the weight might matter more to someone with less revs? That doesn't throw as strong a ball as you.
    My driller swears he uses 14lbs and his carry is the same, but I got tired of looking at the whole back row every night, frame after frame, and going back to 15 stopped that for me.
    Maybe now that I'm more practiced up, I might give the one 14lb that I still have another shot, I sure did like the lighter weight for "wear and tear" reasons, lol.
    My one other thought on the video is, I've always thought the surface makes more difference than anything. Your results seem to bear that out.

Just a big lightbulb looking thing. Glad to know the "generic" core performs well. Would you say if you can handle 14 comfortably you should? It might hit on your dray ass lanes, but play a fade shot and watch that 13 take out the 10.. the lighter you go the more entry angle you need. Rev rate is also important. It is also easier to push through the breakpoint as there is less friction. I have averaged 225 with a 13lb and a 12lb for a league season, but that being said they are less versatile than the 14 or 15. More important though if you need to drop to a lighter weight the lighter balls are workable, but you will have to adjust your game. A good point the lighter weight cores are more forgiving and can improve your game.

The 13 may be the best way to go for those of us pushing 70. Pl3nty of ball, just not so much physical effort necessary.
