      Sowing sunflowers, lettuce, cucumbers. Hoping by the time they are ready to set out, the weather should be warmer

      I'm sowing all of my flowers. Zinnia, gomprena, amaranth, drumsticks, portulaca, cranberry hibiscus, rose mallow, datura, sunflowers, sunflowers, sunflowers, ... ok too many to list hahah.

      I did most of my sowing already but still planning on sowing warm loving plants (nasturtiums, zinnias)

    I have grown Calendula all of my gardening life. I save my own seeds and I haven't bought any for soon-to-be 20 years. I use Calendula with olive oil to make a remedy to use on cuts and scrapes, sunburn, insect bites, and dry skin in general. It will also add color and mild pepper flavor to salads, rice dishes, and meatloaves. One of my absolute faves :D

    James Prigioni has a cool trick for growing carrots. Put planks of wood over the carrot rows and it keeps them more moist - so their germination time ( usually three weeks or so) is more than halved.

      Oh, I'm gonna have to go over and check that video out - it sounds like a really interesting way of starting carrots! Thanks!

      I've seen that too! Currently trialling it with carrots, dill and parsley - doing some with the plank and some without to compare the results!

    Not sure if your going to read this Niall, as this video is quite old, but the bean with the funny name is a Dutch name: "stok-kievits-boon" translates to Pole-lapwing-bean. I am guessing because the colouring reminds people a bit of lapwing birds?

    I heard you mention "F1" several times, and I'm unfamiliar with this term. I'm from the U.S.A and haven't seen it on any of my seed packets. Please let me in on what that means! Also, I love your monthly videos and have already started my calendula, peas, collard greens, merlot lettuce, statice, and ranunculus. I'm looking forward to planting so much more this spring! Happy gardening!

    Great selection. I would love to have space to grow as much. This year the theme of my garden is “veggies I can’t buy in the store” so purple carrots, purple beans and purple radish 🤗

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm totally in agreement with that plan, and have done exactly the same in the past! So many veggies are overpriced in the supermarket, or are hard to find. Love the sound of what you're growing... purple radishes! Yum!

      It's crazy isn't it?! It's starting to take off, which I'm really chuffed about! I didn't know that about the Nasturtium seeds - how cool! That's a new one on me! I think you're the first person to comment on the 4k quality - thank you, because I intentionally film it at 4k so it's great that you noticed!

    Great video Niall, so much sowing,well done. Found out this week how gorgeous purple sprouting brocoli is to eat raw, shared some with other gardeners and we all agreed, and the leaves are edible too cooking like cabbage, heard that last one from Terry King. Can't wait to seed those veg beds in full glory. Again well done, you really are keeping busy. Rainbow chard one of my faves to grow and brussels sprouts. Cucumbers are a must, we love them, especially with red onion,tomato olive oil salt and pepper.Interesting courgettes, ive only got from other gardeners, its something i don't use. Great video and so much great info.

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lorraine! Oh raw purple sprouting broccoli sounds interesting... I suppose because it's small and tender it'd be lovely. I'm imagining it shaved with a vegetable peeler and added into a salad... yum!
      I love that you and I agree on veggie choices! And I'm obviously loving that you're enjoying the videos too! ❤️

      @@niallgardens make sure to eat the little stems too, they are the icing on the cake, as the saying goes. Your videos are very informative,and very good, also that similar produce i keep a eye on whats going on. My brother sent me Cucamelon seeds,a challenge, we have sent each other ones to grow as a challenge. These are a first for me, never heard of them.

    Enjoyed the video and yes I will be growing many of the same veggies when zone 4 allows. I have also enjoyed getting caught up viewing some of your older ones. Do you agree it would be safe to plant onion sets out as long as the ground is warm and dry? Onion set's do well here because of the short season.

    Looks like your borlotti beans have a Dutch name. Stokkievitsboon means pole (stok) lapwing (kievit) bean (boon). The lapwing (peewit) part refers to the speckled look, which is similar to lapwing eggs. Pronounciation, something like: stock-keeveets-bone.
    How were the beans?
    Thanks for the videos!

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว
