I've just planted some leek and spring onion seeds. I haven't put them into the ground though; I've planted them in seed trays, in the conservatory. I've also just planted a mix of chilli's and sweet peppers. I tried growing sprouting broccoli and kale last year but I had a problem with cabbage white butterflies, right into October/November. I tried netting them but the butterflies were so determined to get in!! I've just found your channel and find it inspirational...thank you!

Thanks so much for the lovely comment Pamela! That's great to have some nice stuff started in modules - I'm sure they're going to do well. Yeah I totally feel your pain when it comes to cabbage white butterflies! They always seem to manage to defeat any defences don't they?!

Hi, I enjoy watching your videos and however I was thinking not to you inspired me to grow some vegetables. Gardening is new for me. I am Dutch and 2 years ago we bought a house in France with a lot of garden (or better field) with a wonderful view. Mostly because of my (poor) health we have chosen to stay there during Covid (that was in March 2020 and we are still there). So we started to transform the garden. It is challenging also because the climate is “new” for us. But we are loving it. Your videos are a great help, thank you 😊.

Hi niall just discovered you're channel just to let you know I sowed midnight snack last year for the first time lovely flavour but found them very slow to ripen as a matter of fact some didn't ripen at all from September onwards by the way I'm here in the southeast of Ireland

Lovely video as always niall! I've had such great unexpected success with my purple sprouting (most people seem to have much smaller plants than me!!) - the main thing I wish I'd known is that the plants can get HUGE and can really benefit from having some stakes to support them. Also, of course, Caterpillars and pigeons will completely destroy this crop if you don't net it. Look out for cabbage whitefly and have some neem or horti soap at the ready as well!
I mixed garden lime with blood fish and bone and mixed this into the soil around where they went in and it massively boosted the size and crop (half with, half without). Interestingly I put these all in the ground at the same time but they've all flowered at slightly different times, and you harvest little bits as the rest of the plant continues to shoot, so I wouldn't worry about successional sowing for purple sprouting!
Could be wrong on all this and might have just had amazing beginners luck! Think it's one of my favourite things I've grown though! Can't wait to see the vet garden develop.
    Sorry for the essay!

I've been looking at netting this week because I've been having visions to bird / bug attacks! 😂 Great info to know that they purple sprouting broccoli are going to grow huge! Likewise, cheers for the gen on fertiliser and lime.
I'm super excited about the asparagus - it seems way to good to be true, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Thanks for taking time to do a video.Liz's video was good, you are right.Early Nante 2 i am chancing my arm with them, i am never really successful with Carrots, trying to grow with sharp sand and compost, heard from Roses allotment. I am also growing Hurst main shaft too, love peas,i have some started.Niall purple sprouting is devine, currently harvesting, i cut as i need it. Cabbages are good but mainly use like you say, for coleslaw. Chard is devine, good choice, so hardy. Grows and comes back. Wow re asparagus, two people i know grow it norm way, i love it but never grew. Salad leaves definitely a must, love picking and picking. I never have success with beetroot, daft as it sounds. Fantastic video Niall, in the strange times we are in its nice too have something to look forward too. You reminded me to get some calendula.Pak Cho( sp ) is something i never grew, must look into it. Kale is so yum, especially salt/ pepper olive oil, lightly roastee in oven, like crisps. That's a shame re sweet peas, i love them, i have one arch for them. Have 5 pots of them on the go. I'm not got to sow much more till end of the month, will plant potatoes mid month. Enjoy the week and all the jobs going on, busy times now with all preps. Thanks for a great video share.

You're welcome Lorraine, glad you enjoyed it! Really nice to hear what you think about the different varieties I'm growing and it certainly sounds like you're getting stuck in too! That's so cool that we're growing a few of the same things - we can compare and contrast once I (hopefully!) start getting a harvest!
I've been meaning to ask - do you have a big or small garden?

@@niallgardens thanks Niall, every year some things don't work,so hit and miss. I have a back garden where i have dogs that we leave them be the bosses, but i do container gardening there, with fruit bushes also running down the side if the house. I rent a double allotment, big enough for me. I dream to have what you have, what a beautiful setting.Niall remember i learned from Terry King, that you can eat the leaves from the sprouting broccoli, cook like cabbage.

Thank you for sowing the seeds of gardening interest so well. Would love a summary list of your suggestions; perhaps you have a website? Also maybe you could suggest suppliers, ideally Irish small businesses who can supply online/ An Post.

So... I haven't actually got round to making a website to accompany the channel, but I've had a couple of people ask so that I could cover exactly what you're suggesting. I'll definitely look at starting something like that up.
Out of interest, what would be your preference? A site with a blog and resources, or a dedicated facebook group with those resources plus the ability for everyone to chip in, etc...?

@@niallgardens Personally not a fan of Facebook, but I nevertheless do think it's the best option. I know from experience that blogs can be a heartache to maintain and increase readership, where as FB posts can be short, easy and attract wider audience. If you did, FB I'd definitely follow.
