    I am new to Toast Masters and find your videos instructive and you generally give great advice. Recommending: `I had an`amazing`weekend....... there were phenomenal things that happened`! Really? You are diluting the actual impact of these words; ` amazing` should mean something actually `amazing` not merely another word for `good`. I once dated an Australian who spoke in the manner you recommend. She was super animated and used superlatives when describing pedestrian events. Everything was wonderful, every salad was beautiful or gorgeous, everything was fantastic. It did my head in and was reminiscent of Father Barty Dunne, from Father Ted. We have been married for 10 years.

    • @wadepaterson
      @wadepaterson  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hahaha. Love this comment!
      1) Congrats on 10 years of marriage.
      2) Sounds like your wife is a wonderful person with a positive outlook on life.
      3) I hear you and that's a great point. You don't want to overdo it with words that should be saved for the appropriate emotion. What I want to challenge speakers is to get away from using "good" constantly. I've sat through full Toastmasters evaluations where the evaluator has used "good" 20 times, and no other word to describe the speaking performance. I think we can probably meet somewhere in the middle on this: Tap into the thesaurus when it's warranted, but don't get carried away by calling a mediocre burger "breathtaking."
      Fair?

    This was super helpful! Thank you, been with toastmaster about 6 months now. First time doing Grammarian. The podium turned sideways was a great tip. I enjoyed learning about this as you put a positive spin on it. Not to say that it was negative. You just helped me feel more at ease with it!

      Hi Rosalynd! Great question.
      In our club, we have a separate role called the "Ah Counter." The individual who takes on that role is tasked with keeping track of all of the "crutch" words members use throughout the meeting, then reporting back to the group toward the end.

    Hi Wade. I find there are just too many evaluations going on in a TM meeting - project evaluation, ah Counter, grammarian, language evaluator general evaluator.

    • @wadepaterson
      @wadepaterson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fair point! Evaluations tend to be nearly half of the meeting. Sometimes I think Ah Counter and Grammarian could be one role..
      I think speech evaluators and general evaluators are very important because it ensures that everyone who speaks throughout a meeting receives feedback of some sort.
