I especially liked “thinking of others and not just ourselves; making others around us comfortable.”

Thank you for addressing this issue. For many years, the message in society was that anything goes because it doesn't matter. For this reason, women 40-45 ( including my niece) and younger have no idea what appropriate dressing even means! I've seen women of all ages wearing such short shorts that their bum was hanging out. Also, I've seen shirts so low that ALL of their breast area was exposed. It's definitely time for women to learn that dressing appropriately shows respect for themselves and others.

Indeed, and they often do not have the figure for it.

Women who dress overly provocative definitely raise my antenna about their intentions. Whether they mean to or not their choices send a message. Great video Kay. 🌸

I used to be one of the people in our church with a church credit card, so I took care of a lot of purchases. One day I was going to meet one of the ladies so she could pick up items for her area of ministry. After I got dressed I looked in the mirror and was satisfied…until a still small voice said, “Who are you going to be with?” I realized that there might be a stark contrast between us that might make her feel awkward (she was a single mom living on very little). So I made some adjustments in what I was wearing and, though it was “plainer”, I still looked nice. I was so glad I heeded His nudging.

This is a great topic. As I get older, I've been more aware when shopping of what is appropriate. I'm not suddenly going frumpy, but I have a sense of what looks natural for who I am now. My goal is to feel confident in the situation I'll be in. I truly enjoy fashion and being "stylish", but find your points here are important considerations. I wrote them down and am looking forward to next week's video.

Good topic, Kay! I especially liked your final point. I might add choosing appropriately for your body type. I have been to many weddings where brides chose strapless gowns. While some looked beautiful, others had way too much flesh spilling out and others had to hike the top of the dress with every dance. Hopefully with age we learn what popular styles just won’t work with our body types.

Another excellent video Kay. I personally am sometimes dismayed by the way some people dress. Especially here in the Midwest I’ve noticed the trend toward more and casual clothes over the years, no matter the occasion, like the pajama bottoms that were popular a few years ago. Ugh! When I look at photos from the 1950s and earlier, I can see how far we’ve “fallen”. I’d rather be overdressed than underdressed!

Since puberty, and awareness of my developing body and clothing choices, I’ve always had a “no visible cleavage” rule. I want men to look me in the eyes, not talk to my cleavage. I also never have shown my midriff, or when young, wore shorter than mid-thigh skirts and shorts. Now that I’m past 50, I keep them within about 3 inches of my knees, too-short skirts on mature women look too “desperately trying to look younger”, as do bra and crop tops, micro denim cutoffs and big, bleached, curled fake-looking hair. Unfortunately, our culture worships youth, and invests more value in youthful looks than anything else, especially in women. It’s up to us to change this by not caving into these pressures. I try to accept my age joyfully and to dress for it, there are so many ways to look and feel pretty everyday without trying to look 25 again.

Thank you for the very well thought out presentation. For years I have dressed professionally everyday and had to take into consideration my role. Now that I am retired I am enjoying dressing more casual but also keeping in mind that I still play a role among my peers. It at times can be challenging in knowing exactly what my role is now that I am not in a place of authority but I am enjoying the fact that I don’t have to be business attire everyday. I am still making these new adjustments. Enjoyed your thoughts!

Great topic! When I worked in Corporate America and especially in Financial Services Sales, this was always an angst moment for me when I had to jump on an airplane and show up at their offices. Clearly, I wanted to be dressed professionally, but I also had to consider was I flying out the night before, jumping in a cab and going to my hotel or was I go straight to the client’s office. I couldn’t dress comfy for the flight, but had to have my appropriate uniform on at the get go. Also weather! Boy, that was a kicker. I have been in Chicago when it was -21 and I’ve been in Louisiana when it was 98 degrees with 100% humidity. This is a great topic for everyone to think about. Thanks for the great presentation.

In this narcissistic society where some people only consider themselves when choosing their dress for the day, it's good to hear you say we should consider the other people at the event when deciding what to wear. I've seen too many people show up in their "comfortable clothes" to a wedding shower or a memorial service, thereby not considering the family who is being honored. Thank you, Kay, for injecting a touch of class and elegance into our lives where it's so badly needed!

What a wonderful topic , and timely, as well. I lived in a city that there were Dress Codes in place, for certain fancy Restaurants, and I loved that , because I feel that it's something that is needed. I ,for one, am tired of all these " casual beach type clothing ',with flip flops , ( Especially men. I am not attempting to make it a blanket statement, but its a greater percentage, with men ) ..being worn everywhere. ... Restaurants. Malls. ( just to name a few ) . What happened to wearing nice clothing, appropriate shoes and looking like one is actually taking care in choosing what to wear .
I liked how you touched on the matter of Respect, for ourselves and others as well. Thank you , Miss Kay . 🙏🏻🙂😊💛

I love seeing ruffles and that cottage core or prairie dress trend that I see happening now. I tried on a dress with ruffles and no. I felt ridiculous in it. It might be a combination of my age and my body type, I’m 60 and very tall. I felt so uncomfortable. I’ll try some other elements of these trends, like tiered skirts or flowered or gingham fabrics or have a ruffle in a cuff or just in a different feature.

Kay...you look absolutely stunning in the blue jeans, brown pointy-toed flats and camel jacket with the light colored blouse. The brown motorcycle jacket with the off white shirt with jeans looks stunning too. You look so fabulous in those colors!! The medium and pastel colors look so fab on you. Appropriateness is so ''appropriate'' to talk about. I struggle with that and have been for most of my life. I didn't come from money, most of my clothes were given me or thrifted, that made it hard to find the right size, colors or design to look appropriate 24-7. I felt truly blessed by God when I came across nice clothing that actually fit at the thrift store, so that I could dress appropriately. Now I can afford to buy off the rack and I don't want to spend all that money on clothing. I buy what I think compliments my skin tone, is comfortable and is reasonable. That simplifies my life.

First of all I loved every outfit you wore in this video. You looked stunning! What I’ve noticed over the last couple decades is that more and more people don’t care about how they dress or how they present themselves to others. I have seen people wear jeans to weddings and funerals. I see women on a daily basis wearing yoga pants and T-shirts or spandex tops everywhere from the grocery store to NICE restaurants, not just fast food joints. This includes women well over 50. I’ve seen women dress that way at baby and wedding showers. I used to work with a woman in her late 50s who wore sweat pants and tank tops in the office every day. The rest of the staff wasn’t dressed much better. I always dressed professionally as did a few others but the majority of both the men and women did not. (I worked for a government agency). Dress codes have gone by the wayside for the most part and I don’t think it’s a good thing. What I see is the majority of people dressing down this way. I live in Houston, so I don’t know if it’s like this everywhere, but it’s the norm here.

Here's one you may have forgotten. 10. Body shape and fitness. What looks fine on someone who is fit and trim (shorts or sleeveless tops or shorter skirts) just doesn't look right if you are heavy or jiggly. (That said, there are pictures of you with shorts and sleeveless tops, and you look fine!)

I have seen so many people, women AND men come to church in inappropriate clothing on Sunday morning. They dress like they were going to a pig pickin' or mud wrestling instead of coming to the Lord's house to worship God. People say, it's not what you wear...If a pair of overalls or jeans and a tee shirt is all you have to wear, Wear it! Don't let that stop you from coming to church but do better in the future. Pants have been the norm for a long time so if you wear pants to church, wear clean nice ones and dress them up. Since turning 60 and over, I have to think about clothing I like. Is it age appropriate? i'm not 30 anymore. I'm not comfortable in shorts either or sleeveless shirts. Sometimes it is hard to know what is acceptable but if you have been aware of style and clothing most of your life, you know how to dress for certain activities. I think this video is "right on". You put it so succinctly and non threatening. It didn't hurt a bit.

Thank you for this.I've always tried to adhere to these points. i suspect that I am actually too casually dressed on occasion. Will do my best to up the appropriate dressing. Love your channel.

Such a well organized and well thought out video! I’ll never forget the day I was inappropriately dressed for a wedding in Spain. I didn’t consider the cultural norms and was dressed way too casually. Thank you!

I am age 71 and my "go to" is a solid, color turtleneck, skinny jeans and a Patagonia fleece sweater or vest. I live in cold and snowy Michigan. I am VERY ACTIVE, dogmom that is short in stature (5 ft. 3") and chunky (173 lbs.) and large breasted, so classic, dark colors work best for me. I add color sometimes too but solid colors....

Excellent video. Love the list of factors and took notes :). Being respectful of other people is really the key and thank you for the kind reminder. I am co-hosting a baby shower with the other soon to be grandma and am already thinking about what I want to wear. I'm thinking a dress because it will be at their Church. It is winter so footwear will be key too. Have a blessed day.

Great video, Kay! I'd like to comment on funeral wear. I've seen people show up looking like it's one of their errands that Saturday. I think black is best, or secondarily solid dark blue (quiet, somber colors) is most appropriate as being respectful of the deceased and because you'll be talking to the bereaved family members - you don't want to look like you're at a pool party. Why has wedding and funeral wear turned so funky? Weddings are not frat parties. Funerals are remembrances of someone lost. There, I got that off my chest.

A white shirt and dark pants should be a staple in everyones wardrobe, child or adult. You will always look nice for either. Thrift stores are great places to find them to save money.

Do you have any videos on finding the right dress or skirt length. I really want a tweed suit outfit; however, most of what I see when I am searching for them are way too short for me (I just turned 50.). I would like the hemline to fall at the knee or slightly below. The other issue I find is too much material with longer lengths -maxi dresses. I feel like I am getting twisted in yards of material! I feel like Goldie locks. It's either way too short or way too long and too much material. I wish I could design my own hemline! Thanks.

Considering other people should have been your number 10. That point was just as important as the other 9. Consideration of others around you shows your selflessness and respect for them. Also, I am 55 and 4”10 so many believe I’m younger than I am. So to consider my role is very important to me as well. Consideration and appropriateness are very key to what you wear, how you wear it, and where you wear it. Thank you Kay.

I once asked a coworker if the fashion of shorter skirts on women was just seen as a fashion by men, or a message to men. His reply was that it was definitely a message. As a Christian woman in my early 30s, who worked with a lot of men, I went home and cleaned out my closet of anything that might not give the appropriate message.

Great ideas to consider. But just thought number 9 was the most important. Yes, what is my role? I believe always being aware of this in my 35 year career as an educator was a huge part of my success. My role changed thru the years as did my dress. It is often a fine line . Oh so important.

Love the colour of your top Kay, it looks like an orangey red, lovely on you.
Agree with all you say and yes we all need to think more about what’s appropriate.
Another thing I’d like to mention is showing too much cleavage! I love a beck neck tee but many are just too low cut! Some stylists say for instance open another button and look sexy instead of mumsy. I really don’t like that expression. Why should mumsy be linked to frumpy?

Thank you, Kay! ❤️I think this comes down to: think of others more highly than oneself. It’s a heart issue! Also, we women have to be so careful as to not judge. Read that again. 🤔🙏❤️ we need to offer grace, and we personally need to be considerate, elegant, and honoring to God. One thing I feel differently about is shorts (think Bermuda) and sleeveless shirts. I love them and think they are quite chic! You need yo feel comfortable and confident in what you are wearing!

It's interesting to me that "appropriate" comes from the meaning, "to make one's own." How do we consider context when we choose from so many options? How do we curate from mass-marketed merchandise a look we consider "our own?" You are on the cutting edge here, and bravo to you!

Yes! I loved all the pictures of your outfits on this video. Is there a web page or some way that I could get all those pictures that so I could print them (and try to copy the looks)? I would love to find out every single outfit where you got it and what they're called so I can duplicate it. Since retiring decades ago, 99% of my wardrobe is knit or yoga pants and short or long sleeve clean, neat, feminine type t-shirts. Comfortable for whatever my day may be, grocery shopping, house cleaning, yard work, or just going for a walk. Not having a social life, makes me just want to be comfortable and neat being at home or working in my yard. But I do love your outfits! Would love to know how to get all your special looks with minimal pieces! Hope you're going to make a video with everything included. Do you make house calls to San Diego California? Hahaha!

I dress appropriately. My granddaughters however make me cringe sometimes. I can’t believe my daughter lets them out of the house. I know I’m not their mother. But I’m close to all of them. Sometimes I can’t keep my mouth shut. I’m good at that. And I voice my opinion about their choices in clothing. I’m sure they don’t appreciate it. But there are times I’m not happy to be seen with them in public. I usually don’t judge. But I feel someone needs to tell them how to dress appropriately out in public. I know my mom would not have left leave the house if I was dressed like they do. So maybe that’s why I tell them. I was raised that way.

I wish women in my area would watch your channel. Around here they never dress up, even for church and that's so sad. The funniest thing I saw was a woman who had come to the grocery store dressed in her pajamas and slippers with only an overcoat thrown over top. I'm 73 going on 74 and I want to learn to dress for my age. Looking forward to seeing your other videos. Keep up the good work!
