- RM builds appealing plywood fast cruisers that are light, bright and bold,. This latest Lombard designed flagship has plenty going for it, outside and in as Toby Hodges discovers during this sail trial

It's a good and interesting boat.
It's a direct concurrent for JPK, POGO and X Yacht.
Thanks for review.
I too have a plywood cruising sloop 38 feet long. Twice to Europe, twice to the South Pacific. If completely covered is resin and glass, it’s every bit as good if not better than glass alone.
Nice boat. Thanks, Toby! ⛵⛵⛵
I spent weeks on many boats and my favorites are these RM and POGO. Theys are stiff against wind and does not heel that much. For this reason they are very comfortable at anchor also for this reason a carbon light mast does make a lot of sense on this RM. They easily go faster than wind at beam reach. Il love the clean interior and those two front windows. They are specialy usefull for the grinder/trimmer central position between the winch.
I personally love Twin keelers so this would be right up my street. You made a comment about this only being capable of drying out on a temporary basis for maintenance. How does this work for winter layups? The beauty of twin id doesn't need much chocking.
Also on this thought and on the same vain of question as above around North Wales this could also be ideal, drying mooring
Great looking boat and nice interior.
Living in Nova Scotia, I'd love to have that boat with bildge keels
In Brittany and feel the same. All the great places to visit are estuaries and beaches. I wonder how robust it really is, though. I get the impression it's for occasional use unlike something like a Centaur.
Great boats, innovative and fast. Looking forward to the 1080
I consider this a perfect lay-out, although it seems to lack storage.
That massive open cockpit looks like it would verge on the dangerous in a heavy sea. Helming from the windward wheel would be scary looking down at the leeward rail. And working at the foot of the mast would also be precarious with that sloping slippy windscreen underfoot. I much prefer the older RMs that had tiller steering so you could helm from within the protection of the cockpit, winches close to hand, and with the mast forward of the saloon windscreen planted on a wide flat deck. I think RM have rather sadly moved away from their niche as rugged fast long-distance cruising boats to trying to compete with the plastic AWBs in the Mediterranean marina-hopper market.
Tony look up John Spencers ply yachts in NZ , You might get a surprise . Been shooting way above there pay grade for 70 years , Whispers , Ragtime etc. amazing man way ahead of ply boats before his time , fast , cheap for the average sailor to build at home . Imported car treated ply boxes was a good start , Cheap as chips .
And Dudley Dix who does radius chine ply boats
Awesome 🙌
nice bare wago connector in the cockpit locker 4:45
Very interesting boat. I was looking forward to this sail video after the boat show interior tour. Sadly the winds were pretty light…
That wind screen in the front of the saloon certainly looks good and let in a lot of light. Does it have proper blinds inside, or do you have to devise something from the outside? In a Med summer that thing will be a son oven.
Plywood and epoxy can be very strong. I had my 45 footer transported on the wrong trailer for a 3 hour delivery. 5 support pads of 7 inchs square and no damage to the hull. Mine is mahogany and fir.
Plywood is an excellent boat building material - cost effective, strong, lightweight, and sustainable. Coupled with a GRP lid and the marvel that is epoxy, and there’s nothing not to like!
Please, please review the new Punch cats when they’re released. Ply / epoxy and look very promising.
Agreed. And thanks - will check them out
😂 👍🏼 ...nice lines Toby...
The only thing i dont like is the aft helms... thats my own reasoning ..though im glad you mentioned the raisable transom/swim step.
You know im going to mention the potential of chemically structuraly modified timber and the fact that is a natural for ply built construction as its made up of thin layers of softwoods anyway and can be moulded prior to setting.
Ply hulls are strong and light, epoxy coated marine ply is an excellent sustainable resource and net carbon sink for the lifetime of the vessel ..
Using the modified version that boat would be as strong as Aluminium possibly stronger as easy to work as ply whilst being as stiff as carbon but more resiliant... and would probably remain water and rot resistant even on deck without paint for 80years. Given RMs French, i think they will want to experiment with it as soon as it starts becoming available.
It also shows the French are not afraid of building modern bilge keel boats. They long ago recognised that theres an expensive limmit on marina type births and anchorages..
With this you know you can not only settle level but also do most below waterline checks and maintanance without diving gear or the cost of hauling out a 50ft plus boat.😎
Many good points there.
Most all boats were made of wood till when??? the 50"s when fiberglass came round? Something like that. Some of the biggest most expensive sport fishers are made of wood still. Great material.
How strong is it compared to the alternatives? As good as GRP? Better?
It’s stronger
It’s ridiculous these newer yachts don’t have a proper seat. And they put the traveler in a position to easily trip and fall off.
The RM design/build ethos doesn’t work for some reason at this size - their smaller boats are much better. Also, those guys couldn’t have made a bigger mess with the sheets and lines if they tried.
Interior looks a bit spartan like a M.A.T full-blooded racing yacht which it is not ..
Ragtime?
Hi. That is probably the worst transom design ever. It's no wonder the owner is installing a swim platform/ant-fallinthesea design. Awful
Plywood boats belong to the past and are structurally very weak and subject to rot .
