There are no rules to halo halo, so it's open to interpretation. The name of the dessert says it all, mix mix! Throw in what you want and no one can say it's wrong or non-traditional. Rejoice in the creativity and diversity that is being a Filipino.

Filipinos are way too proud when it comes to food. It's sad when you read reviews of Filipino restaurants here in the US and almost all the bad reviews are from fellow Filipinos saying they're not authentic. Even in the Philippines every dish is different wherever you are

Technically she is correct, since the 2nd dessert was more of what we call "Buko Pandan" the 3rd is what we call "Mais Con Yelo", these are different desserts to Halo Halo which is closer to "Sa malamig (iced desserts)"... The 4th is I have no idea but it's not what we'd call a Halo Halo per se.
I'd still eat them all nonetheless.

@@JoJo-xl4mb Halo-halo is open to interpretation. If everyone made it with the exact same ingredients, there would be nothing to judge. Also, if Erica is so obsessed with authenticity and doing things the "right" way, she should learn how to pronounce pandan correctly.

For someone who bakes and a frustrated chef, I'm impressed with the Pavlova Halo-halo. It's very innovative. He could be a pastry chef with those ideas. Even I'm Filipino myself, I think there's nothing wrong with making something new to a traditional dish. As long as the main components are there. But ngl Mais con yelo and Pandan kind of feels like a different dish but still would want to try it!

The 2 other Filipinos are not familiar with "Mais Con Yelo" unfortunately. Probably their parents didn't introduce it to them. Or they haven't been to the Philippines since the time they lived in Australia. They should visit the Philippines again and explore their foods more. We have lots more to offer. We don't just have traditional halo-halo.. Aside from "Mais Con Yelo", we also do have "Crema de Leche". It's delicious too. A must-try!

The Halo Halo I grew up is variety of fruits. Fresh fruits mangoes, Avocado, banana, coconut shreds. Candied fruits jackfruit, pineapple. Then, Ube halaya, Red beans, Nata de Coco. Sweeten it with sugar. Put in the grated ice. Make it creamy with evaporated milk, then top it cornflakes or wafer sticks.

The Philippines is so regional and diverse that each region is known for its own specialty in ingredients and produce. Halo-halo more accurately translated to “all mixed together”, is a celebration of that diversity by way of combining different regional ingredients into one cup. The second and third dishes were not halo-halo, those were 2 other Filipino desserts called sago’t gulaman and mais con yelo. Contrary to what most people assume, ‘halo halo’ is not an umbrella term for any dessert dish that mixes multiple ingredients together, there is history in the dish too.

cereals ended up as a replacement because you can't easily buy pinipig abroad. Food/dessert sometimes evolves if ingredients are not available.

Mais con yelo is not halo-halo btw and is a dessert on its own. Halo halo is called the way it is bc of the amount of ingredients you have to MIX. Mais con yelo on the other hand is really just corn, milk, and ice. Sometimes saba and langka. But Ask any Filipino in the Philippines and they would not categorize mais con yelo as halo halo at all. Mais con yelo is mais con yelo. So I'm a little sad that they dissed it, and that something almost completely foreign (arville's halo halo) won :(

The lady in this video has every right to judge these so called Halo Halo's as not authentic and score it down because they lacked the traditional filipino Halo halo ingredients which are very distinct and unique combinations compared to other shaved ice deserts... it's NOT called a filipino fusion competition! Some people just prefer traditional and OG flavours no need to complain or be so negative about the Lady who appreciates more traditional Halo Halo. Halo-Halo is not Mix-Mix or the way of eating it that you have to mix first❌ Halo-Halo means different ingredients mix together ✔️ So the stereotype of Halo-Halo mixing first before eating is not true. It's actually up to you on how you want to enjoy eating Halo-Halo. But I myself prefer eating that Stick-O first, 2nd the ice cream, then scoop those ingredients beneath. Just scoop everything and let the ice melt itself.

2nd and 3rd one are not Halo Halo, at least for me. The 2nd one has hardly any ingredients on it. The 3rd one is literally just a simple Mais con yelo with just the ice cream added and you would call that Halo Halo? Come on, man!
