      If you don't mind a bit of mess (usually happens with crushed ice than shaved), you can mix it right away...but if you want less mess, eat it until the ice has a chance to melt a bit. It makes it easier to mix and you can even drink it too. But yeah, ice texture and portion size make a big difference in the ease of mixing.

    I love Halo Halo. When I was a kid I would literally eat nata de coco and macapuno right off the jar LOL. The best part of eating Halo Halo is at the end when the ice have mostly melted, you can just drink the whole thing.

      I've never mixed mine. Lol. I guess it makes sense now that I look back on it. I'll stay without mixing it though. I sort of like separating some of the ingredients for certain foods. It's gonna get mixed in your mouth anyway, so that's kind of my thought process when eating it. Not Filipino myself, but I grew up around a lot of my friends' families whom are Filipino and naturally I've pretty much had a lot of Filipino cuisine growing up. Every corner was either Mexican restaurant or any other Asian restaurant you can think of from Japanese/Korean BBQ and all the way to more South East Asian foods. I guess I was lucky living in a more diverse area. I literally couldn't imagine not having all the variety of food I've had throughout he years. Haha.

    I'm Filipino and I have halo halo on special occasions. Or when we go out to a Filipino restaurant. My favorite toppings are ube ice cream, ube paste, and evaporated milk because it just mixes with everything and makes it so flavorful

  • @jomi025
    @jomi025 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    Your halo-halo looked amazing, Emmy! Looks as good as the ones they serve in restaurants here. And I love how you even made your own ube ice cream. Looks just like the ube ice cream served in tubs here, I actually thought it was store-bought. Next time you make this, try mixing it all up together before eating it so you get a bit of everything in one spoonful. Try also adding a bit of a crunchy element next time like rice crispies or cornflakes. Traditionally, we add what is called pinipig, which is essentially toasted flattened sticky rice. 😊 Oh, and you also gotta try adding bananas cooked in brown sugar syrup, it's great! Anyways, terrific job, Emmy! That ice-shaving bit was totally hilarious. 😂 And this made me crave for halo-halo, too. 😄

  • @rdsdentalclinic1725
    @rdsdentalclinic1725 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We usually add rice crispies or what we locally called pinipig (dried flattened toasted rice) or if not available, we use corn flakes for added texture and nutty aroma. Its usually placed on top. This favorite Filipino dessert is usually mixed altogether. When everything is well mixed, what you scoop from the bottom of your bowl/glass adds to the surprise of what sweet preserve you're going to get. Thanks for featuring our all time favorite dessert! More power to your show! (Windsong677)

    this makes my filipino heart happy!! i've seen so many bullshit americanized recipes of halo halo on food network and tastemade. but the way emmy made it is very true to how my family makes it, and how i enjoyed it in restaurants in the philippines!! i personally put an obscene amount of leche flan and ube ice cream, and a little more evaporated milk than in the video lmao....it was nice to see emmy make this, and i hope that she enjoys more filipino food in the future!! chicken adobo would be a great one😁

  • @kjgomes
    @kjgomes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +59

    Ok, so I have only had this once, from a Filipino store in Canada. The version I had was in a tall glass, which I believe is more common than a bowl. However, one thing I noticed was that the most important flavour in the one I had (although not necessarily my favourite) was the toasted rice, which I believe is called pinipig in Tagalog, but also coconut milk. I feel that those two elements are key and missing from this recipe. Any thoughts from the Filipinos out there?

    • @LeahLaushway
      @LeahLaushway 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      kjgomes I'm half-Flip and have never seen coconut milk used in halo-halo, just condensed milk as the liquid. Pinipig isn't used all the time, either. I'd say the lecheflan, sweetened beans, jackfruit, and nata de coco are the most common ingredients, in my experience.

    • @kjgomes
      @kjgomes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cool. Thanks for the info! Actually, now that I think about it, maybe it was all the other coconut products that gave it that coconut like flavour which I thought was coconut milk. I don't think there was too much condensed milk used in the one I had as it didn't have that dairy taste. I was told by Filipino friends that the one I had was pretty authentic. And, I for one was not a fan of the pinipig as I felt like that's all I tasted, so I'm glad it's not used all the time. Anyway, I still liked it. Next, I want to try the halo halo ice cream I saw at the local Asian store!

    • @kpfernandico
      @kpfernandico 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      kjgomes I'm a Filipino. I think what you're talking about is the Buko Halo. It's also halo halo but mixed with coconut ingredients and pinipig (sometimes) . It is usually served in a coconut shell to serve as a bowl. :)

    • @kjgomes
      @kjgomes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ah cool. I looked up Buko Halo-Halo online and it seems to be closer to what I had. What I had came in a glass and with a straw (and a spoon). It was definitely something you could suck liquid out of. The one in this video seems to be more similar to korean binsu, so just shaved ice with toppings as opposed to a drink. I guess like everything, different people make it in different ways.

    • @mingming4983
      @mingming4983 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kjgomes PINIPIG!!! They add a different dimension to eating halo-halo because they're so crispy. Like, there's a sudden crunch between the weird, slimy and gummy bites :-) It takes like nothing though, so any other substitute would be good, like the choco cigar Emmy used a garnish. Though the chocolate kinda disrupts the flavor... maybe.

I love halo halo..but here in the Philippines..before we eat them.. we mix them all together literally toggle them...until everything is incorporated until it it become like a mixture of all the ingredients so the flavors are well-combined and rich...that is why it is called halo halo...you literally have to "mix-mix" all the ingredients before it is eaten ...it is a winner!

Favorite topping would be sweetened bananas, sago and macapuno. Sometimes they add yema (I think it's commonly known as dulce de leche?) and it's so so good. Big fan from the Philippines! Enjoyed this immensely. :D

    Awesome job!!! Halo halo is one of my favorite desserts! Because of its complexity it is so much fun to eat...many flavors and textures that give your mouth and taste buds a very tasteful and delicious experience! I like to stir mine up together and every mouthful becomes a delightful surprise....like a box of chocolate....you never know what your going to get...but it's always mmmmm mmmmmmm goooooooood! 😋

    I think you should also mix them all together to get all the flavors compliment each other, hence the halo-halo (mix mix) term. :) I love halo-halo and you made it beautifully!

    Emmy im a filipino and i live in the philippines currently and i love halo halo but i see you were eating it wrong. You are right roughly translated it means mix mix. thats what you are supposed to do mix all of it together until the different elements incorporate into a single purple mixture.

      i meant this comment as an fyi only didnt mean to offend and there are ways to eat specific things for example fruit salad its like having the cream on the side then eating a specific fruit dipping it into the cream then eating it. Just like fruit salad you have to mix it together so you get all the fruits in just one bite :D

    This is so adorable! Great job recreating halo-halo. My favorite is the white version, which has macapuno, sweetened saba (like a plantain), and leche flan. I never did like ube and beans, so always give away my ice cream or have it replaced with vanilla ice cream.

    In my place, halo-halos usually sold by the households are sweetened using sugar instead of condensed milk. "minatamis na saging" or sweetened banana added to its sweetness too. You can also add sweet potatoes in there which is my favorite! And like what they said, for me it's better to mix everything first. And I also want the ice to be melted before I dig into it. 😊

    Good job Emmy! My fave topping is Nata de coco (something about that chewy texture). I never really "mix-mix" it til I'm at the bottom of the glass. 🍨 and I usually spread a layer of Ube jam inside my glass before loading up with shaved ice and the rest of the goodies.

    My mom and I eat this quite often! We don't have the ube in it because we won't eat much of the ice cream aside from in halo halo. We do put mostly the pre made halo halo mix with extra beans, jellies, and we usually use just milk. I like sweet, she doesn't, so she prefers it without condensed milk. Sometimes she uses evaporated if we have it. You should try more Filipino food because I find most of them sooooo stinking good.

    Hi Emmy! Just wanna say I love your videos! A little something to share, Halo-halo (halo) means mix. In the latter part you should have mixed every ingredient together 😊 Thus giving every spoon of halo-halo a cold and milky taste👍try it next time and add some sweetened bananas, gulaman and sago. You'll love it!

    Was waiting for you to violently mix it into oblivion but still a good video, Emmy 😂 halo-halo means mix mix, and for good reason because in my opinion, it tastes a lot better when it's all combined together. But I'm sure you can eat it the way you did but trust me when I say it tastes a lot better when mixed :)
