Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
So this is permanence, love's shattered pride
What once was innocence, turned on its side
A cloud hangs over me, marks every move
Deep in the memory, of what once was love
[Verse 2]
Oh how I realised how I wanted time
Put into perspective, tried so hard to find
Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way
Destiny unfolded, I watched it slip away
[Verse 3]
Excessive flash points, beyond all reach
Solitary demands for all I'd like to keep
Let's take a ride out, see what we can find
A valueless collection of hopes and past desires
[Verse 4]
I never realised the lengths I'd have to go
All the darkest corners of a sense I didn't know
Just for one moment, I heard somebody call
Looked beyond the day in hand, there's nothing there at all
[Verse 5]
Now that I've realised how it's all gone wrong
Gotta find some therapy, this treatment takes too long
Deep in the heart of where sympathy held sway
Gotta find my destiny, before it gets too late
#JoyDivision #TwentyFourHours - เพลง
The song is the realisation that your life will never be the same in a negative sense.
For me, this is one of the most powerful songs ever written.
It is for sure, Alex.
I agree. Ian Curtis is writing his own epitaph in those lyrics and his genius delivery. It's so sad to think he died at 23. What a talent he was, and could have been.
Agreed , all versions , bass line changed my life
i definitely agree
For sure !
I love everybody who loves this
@@markmcarthy596 So you love me as I love you. 😉🖤

Masterpiece that has clearly withstood the test of time.
...gets better with age like fine wine!
Definitely never received the fame but 2 me its better than if fame happened
A true musical poet crying out in pain. RIP Ian.
Destiny unfolded, I watched it slip away…
That line always kills me. Classic.
Feels like a knife to my belly, every time.
It means the world to me, that sentence
The song is a sledgehammer to the chest & that line is the last rib snapping
This one is misery personified. The last chance of hope gone. That last verse really shows his feelings

He had crippling epilepsy you know also dealing with a bad break up in his marriage also he suffered from black depression. He still managed to write the most graceful songs. 😢
His poetry is so beautiful and intelligent. It’s so fascinating.

this is the best Joy Division song for me, the vocals are haunting, you don't have to understand the lyrics to know the meaning and the instruments gives out the meaning of the song even without the lyrics.
"look beyond the day in hand, there's nothing there at all" The youth of today feel you Ian
One of the best bass Hooks ever.
Ian Curtis was the best song writer of his era,he had a great handle and understanding of human frailty, you don't see that much anymore.

It makes you wonder just how big Joy Division could have become in the 80s. Curtis died five months into the decade. The guy had so much talent.
You don't have to find your destiny, and it is never too late.
I can understand how Ian must of felt , I suffer with epilepsy and mental health and I’m 23 everyday is a battle . This song is a masterpiece so sad rest in peace Ian .
don't loose the fight, come back here at each low point, rise up and fight another day
Much love Rachel ❤️
im 24 and have epilepsy and mental health problems too life is really hard, music helps ALOT
May God bless and keep you Rachel and give you strength to keep on fighting.

There's no feeling like going to your Dad's house 24 hours after his death, picking up his still plugged in Fender Precision and knocking out this bassline on the top 2 strings. Miss you Dad nearly one year on xx
Beautiful tribute.
I’m sorry for your loss. Take care 💙
I'm sorry for your loss. My Dad took his own life in 2004.
The tempo in this song really conveys this urgency which is why I love its title. It really feels like Ian is counting down his final moments. Also the lyricism is brilliant.
Gotta find my destiny,

Putain, 40 ans! Moi....ben...pas loin😏
and we are all the better and stronger for it.......painful as hell but still we fight!
Wouldn't that be Heart & Soul?🤔
After 45 yrs i know exactly what you mean somethings just take up residence returning in constant echo like smoke rings of the mind
40 yrs on this song/album never gets tired. 40 yrs from now they'll say the same thing. Cheers Ian...and thank you.
Echo that
I am listening to this in 2021 and it still sounds contemporary. Curtis was way ahead of his time.
@@WHU63 time for man like Ian not exist!
The peaks and troughs in this song are like life itself. Always eerie listening to Ian's lyrics in a context forty years after his death. Interviews you read or hear from bandmates never saw his suicide coming despite the bleakness of his lyrics. I guess his contemporaries just saw it as art or provocative in some way. This ranks as one of their greatest songs for sure. The rawness and unbridled mental anguish that that poor man suffered can only be imagined, a burden I wouldn't wish on anyone. Your spirit lives on young man x
Ian never wanted to really step foot in the evil empire that was the USA but Factory was pushing the band to make headways there. Ian detested all things American and Regan.

Joy Division 24 hours fantastic song sad but true reflection 😢
He was so young, but with an old soul. Seemed he had lived so much to have such knowledge. Me almost 60 seeing my life described in this song.

Wow , how great to see Ian’s lyrics.
This Music is Simply heartbreacking 😢,raw, sad angst, rage, broket, hopeless Beauty!
The lyrics sounds so personal.
35 years has passed sinced my first Joy Division experience. I was only 13. That day changed my life forever.
Truly a searing of the heart experience if it's anything like mine.

The ultimate dichotomy. Hope and light via being shown overwhelming despair. What a great and precious gift JD is to us all!
In this album, the pain Ian was going through is well reflected, it really is an extraordinary album, that man was a genius.

A tortured genius

I love when he sings
“Excessive flatulence, beyond all reach”
Beautiful and heart wrenching at the same time.
I nearly came off my bike listening to this. Had earphones in under my helmet. The kind of song that eggs you on. Faster and faster. Until a corner caught me out and I still don't know how I git away with it. Possibly my favourite ever song ever made.

What a voice, mesmerizing and hauting at the same time, spellbinding I should say. There's indeed something permanent in this song... To me, it's never been so much to the point.
The beat & melody and his lyrics is just simply amazing in this song 🙏🏽 r.i.p Ian
Perfection! Ian at his highest!
I've always wondered if Joy Division saved my life as much as it nearly took it? Still here so I suppose so.
what do you mean it nearly took it?
@@buffy8021 well, Buffy, at some point in my early teens Joy Division turned from music to a way of life for me. Mirroring the desperation & hopelessness of Ians lyrics to my own life occasionally pushed me close to his same fate. Thankfully I never fully broke as he did.

He was getting absolutely spent.
He needed the right combination of substances, legal or otherwise. Given the mistakes made by those who tried to treat him, his best hopes were on the otherwise category. One which he either refused or never had the chance to meet.
Hannett told me he thought the sound of the drums on 24 Hours was one of the best things, recording wise, that they'd done together. If you focus and just lisyen to the drums you might agree.
The depths you go sometimes can't be comprehended by a normal, untainted soul. It is happening again, another love is being thrown away due to my insecurities.
Yet there is so much to pay, the price of a mistake is so high. I wish I couldn't love, it would be ten thousand times better than feeling hopeless, like I feel right now.
It hurts terribly, but my shield is too high. What they have done to me? Why they put these doubts in my head? Doubts even here?
Yes!! No comments about Joy Division being underrated 🥳

Saw them in 1980 at the Lyceum with Killing Joke. This song is one of my favourites. Every time I listen to Joy Division over all the years, it will always resonate with me. I was living in Belfast when I traveled to see this show. I was really young and when my ma found out about it, she had a fit so! But I HAD to see them!!!! (I was 15 🤣) I live in America now, and I met ONE younger person who was a true fan…knew more than Love will tear us apart. I’m always suspect of people who claim it’s their favourite song but end up literally knowing no other songs….or people who ask me about my original Joy Division Unknown Pleasures t-shirt and tentatively say “I think I’ve seen that before…what band is it again?” 🙄 F*cks sake! Piss off, kid. Yeah I’m old and still a post punk fan…truthfully a Joy Division fan above all. Saw Peter Hook and the Light a few years ago…. Hooky stays true to the music! The bass lines were a big draw to me. (BTW he sang some back-up vocals at live Joy Division shows 🥰). I respect Hooky a great deal! Lalala enough about my opinions. I will NEVER forget the London show at the Lyceum in 1980. Seen loads of bands live since that show, but they’ve never had that collective energy or made such an impression on me like that one. ❤️ Rest in deep peace dear, Ian. No one has or will write songs like yours.
That's a fabulous post, friend.
We must be about the same age (I was born in '65) and although sadly I never got to see Joy Division, I have held a candle for them since I learned about Ian's death when I was 14.

Was there ever a better lyricist than Ian?
No.
They say that great poetry is dragged from the depths of the soul. Curtis was a poet, and the darkness of his lyrics are borne from the chaos in his life. I agree, there have been few better lyricist. This guy basically wrote his own epitaph through his songs.
Mark Hollis ( Talk Talk) was on the same level.
