    • @Jolynesimpnumber4
      @Jolynesimpnumber4 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +98

      Exactly, a sympathetic villain isn’t inherently better than a straight up evil villain. They both have their purpose and functions. A story is a machine and it needs the parts it needs to efficiently get its main message across.

    • @potatofarmergyro1720
      @potatofarmergyro1720 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +54

      I kinda agree but I think the reason so many people tend to like sympathetic villains is because they're more relatable and feel more real than any other mustache twirling villains who are evil for the sake of evil. Most of my favorite villains are sympathetic despite some being horrible people. I guess what I'm trying to say is that yeah every villain doesn't need to be sympathetic but they need something that makes them feel real and not just a cardboard cutout.

    • @bruh1704
      @bruh1704 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

      Sympathetic villains are almost always better than straight evil because they inherently require a deeper baseline of writing and character. Villain A wants to destroy the world because that kills humanity but villain B wants to destroy the world because he believes life is meaningless and serves to extend suffering. This is an example of how adding even a single layer of reasoning amplifies the depth of not only a villain - but a character. Some villains who are purely evil are amazing like Frieza from DBZ, he isn’t relatable or likeable, he is detestable in every sense however due to his juxtaposition to goku’s values and character, both are greatly enriched by the simplicity. When characters are focused in isolation, their impact in context to the rest of the cast and story is often forgotten even though it is sometimes the most important factor. Furthermore, when a villain and hero are both too sympathetic the reader is left only with plot holes that the author needs to fill in. Why don’t they see the solution the same way? Why does the villain have to be so radical if a different solution is proposed? The villain needs to oppose the hero and the author’s job is to provide strong justification that this character HAS to carry out their actions in accordance to their will.

    While both Dio and Diego ultimately gained their iconic powers (vampirism and Scary Monsters) from others, Dio is ultimately just leeching off of a much more successful predecessor who managed to use the full potential of the power Dio became a vampire through while Dio only scratched the surface, with Dio needing another power- a Stand- something all things with the right will power can get to be a threat.
    In contrast, Diego's use of his new Stand is so unorthodox and versatile, that it's seen more as Diego's power than Dr. Ferninand's due to Diego taking it to heights that the original user couldn't even dream of. It's very telling that when the Stand Scary Monsters comes up, Diego comes up as the user.

      Aye. He also made a potent conbo with Soundman and was super relentless, having almost killed Funny Valentine by the slimmest of margins. It’s only right that in his dying moments Valentine would use his last gambit to the only adversary who had both times forced him to withdraw. Diago. While it is a different Diago, it was that relentless drive and ingenuity that ultimately defeated Johnny and made him almost the ultimate victor.
      In a sense, Diago is a perfect foil to Johnny not because they are opposites but because they are exactly the same. Young men who are dealt an awful lot in life who would do *anything* to achieve their dreams, but despite starting from much less Diago was much more successful. Diago took *every tiny advantage* he could find and made it his own.

    11:52 That ambition. The absolute desire to stand on top is what makes me love Diego. What I love most is the transition from a weaker Diego to a more powerful one. The World really added more emphasis to Diego's character imo cause he realized this was the key to winning. Alternate World Diego had a better chance at winning and achieving his goal. His ambition and his stand, the key to his victory, actually took him somewhere. He still died yes but I feel like got farther to his goal than part 3 Dio got to his. Diego's The World really was the salt that was needed in the pot. The power he attained is what made him more enjoyable. Cause original Diego was close yes as mention in the vid but he could've gotten farther if he had the world. It's like comparing it to part 1 and part 3 Dio. Using Jonathan's body and attaining the world. The world is the exact key that would've brought every Dio to their absolute peak and reach their goals if it wasn't for plot and Joestars.
    Vampire to Vampire with Stand. Love the original concept. It was needed in order to create the part 7 transition of dinosaur to pure stand user. But for Alternate world Diego to show how useless his other world counterpart and prove why he would stand on top is just something I enjoy. I love Diego.

    The think Diego really lacks is the rivalry with Johnny like Dio and Jonathan had. I'm not saying they should be brothers, but maybe their horse racing rivalry could have been flashed out more to show that they know each other well.
    I also didn't like that Diego died so early. Dio's influence on the original timeline was major, he affected 6 parts, while Diego's important only in part 7, kinda downgrade, wish we saw him rule instead of valentine and perhaps in part 8 (when he's no longer so strong) someone is finally able to take him down.
    Oh and btw Dio is not evil just for evil sake, that's really misrepresenting of the series' main antagonist. And no, part 6 Dio isn't weird, he's the part 3 Dio in calm situations, he just acts differently in different circumstances, like everyone.

    I wanted to comment on your point that "a sympathetic villain is better than a purely evil villain." That is not true, you can subjectively prefer a sympathetic villain over a purely evil villain, but neither are objectively superior to one another. There are advantages to having a purely evil villain, without needing to take their backstory seriously or having any morals you can just sit back and enjoy the actions the villain does, either through them joyfully killing innocents, steeling without a care for the world, or just want to take over the world and do it with a smile. There are reasons a one-note evil character works, and Dio takes that one note and plays it super well. The same is true with a more sympathetic villain. You get to understand why the villain is the way he is and how that drives them to perform the atrocities they do. Both have prose and cons, but neither are better or worse, it's all subjective. I still prefer Dio over Diego, because it's just fun seeing Dio being the evil bastard that he is, but that doesn't make Diego worse.

A poorly written sympathetic villain isn't better than a well-written pure evil villain and vice-versa. Tbh I've had my fill of poorly written "sympathetic" villains where they just get redeemed by us being shown out of nowhere one scene of them being vulnerable for no good reason. He had a hard life with a loving mother who embedded within him a sense of pride, and with her passing a dark determination to do anything to rise above the masses. Other Jojo big bads are either simple in their motives, or are some kind of radical. The depths of Diego make him more of a rival than a villain.

From part one, to part three, to part six. And it comes down to a very simple thing, I like a pure evil villain. Albert Wesker is one of my favorite villains because he's just a guy who wants to kill billions to become a god. He's not complex. He's just evil. Therefore he can just be a badass, overpowered villain that can just do what he wants. He's fun. DIO is fun. I think DIO is more complex than Wesker. Part 3 DIO is probably my favorite villain of all time. Period. DIO in general, from 1 to 6 is my favorite villain of all time. I just like a pure evil, evil for the sake of it villain. Complex, sympathetic villains are nice. But nothing wrong with a villain that's just evil. As long as they're fun. And DIO is fun.

    Taking the stance that there’s an apples to apples comparison that allows one character to be *better* written I think is unfair to the intention of each of the characters. While I do think part 7 is a better realized and more ambitious story, with diego being a crucial centerpiece of it, I don’t think it’s fair to just say he’s straight *better* than DIO in every regard.
    The story of steel ball run is of growth. Johnny has been humbled by his loss of legs and goes on a journey to regain his pride and determination in a more powerful and just fashion than he had before. Diego exists and I think represents the evil side of that hunger. They each are wronged by the world and stripped of their fundamental personalities but take to regain that sense of self in different ways. DIO and his stories are never about that. DIO is transcendent EVIL. The guy is larger than life menace in tale about the clash of good and evil and basic extremes of humans morality. At least in part 1. In part 3 he’s a menace again and a clash of titans again but now he’s a demon of bloodlines and family pride. In part 6 he’s an ally to pucci and the representation of faith, higher powers and the dissatisfaction of normal existence and the danger of the pursuit of heaven instead of standing your ground against the perils of life like Jolyne does.
    My point being that in every part Dio is a foil. He’s the other side of the coin. The weight that balances the message of the story from being too general. Part 7 Dio would have no chemistry with Jotaro nor Jonathan because the Johnny-Diego-Gyro dynamic only works because it’s about these young men each trying to find, prove, and steal their place in the world. It’s the journey of fortune and ideals, and how that mechanism controls our lives or how we can control it to take control of our lives.
    Diego IS the Dio of part 7. Dio, in concept, is a foil of similarity and the dark brother of our protag. Both Dios knock it out the park and a preference to Diego is a testament to the nuance of the part and not something as simple as “character development”, and “sympathy” being objective better practice. Dio is as the story needs a Dio to be. To like Dio is to like the story and appreciate its direction. You can’t separate Dio from his context and just say that doing the surface level things like adding certain traits to your story makes it better with no consideration of intent and direction.

    No, sympathetic villains are not always better than purely evil villains. It’s the executions that matters and DIO and Diego where executing different things. DIO was supposed to represent an ultimate evil that was basically a curse on the Joestar bloodline and he highly accomplished that. Diego was meant to be someone who had the ambition and drive to do anything to win, and he highly accomplished that.
    Both of them are absolutely amazing characters narratively speaking and to say one is better than the other just cuz ones more sympathetic is crazy. Hell, DIO is sympathetic too in the fact that his father was a drunkard and abuser and influenced DIO’s personality greatly.

    @dth99times 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I like Dio/DIO because he starts out as a character with a difficult background who learns to manipulate people. When his nature is revealed, he is essentially defeated. The mask is his only way out, and it is absolutely a corrupting force.
    The mask allows for his ambitions to become infinite. Before the mask, his ambitions were laid to rest by someone he has a degree of respect for. With the mask, he obtains what he believes is absolute power, which absolutely corrupts him. He now sees the heavens (figuratively) within his reach. He is then humbled once again by basically the only person he respects. The person who he thought was the peak of humanity proves that even as a human, he still seemingly surpasses Dio.
    Then he gets a new lease at life. By claiming the body of the only person he believes is more powerful than his current state, he should be unstoppable. His only threats are the descendants of his only rival. His assumption is that they couldn't possibly compare to Jonathan, being simply offspring. He is now capable of conquering not only humanity, but God himself. Surely, he can achieve heaven by nature of being the pinacle of both humanity and vampire. Nothing is outside his reach.
    But he doesn't realize that the traits that made Jonathan weren't just in his body, but in his blood and spirit. That spirit passes along through his descendants. Jotaro is more capable of using the spirit of the Joestar lineage than even DIO. His ambition is endless, but Jotaro ihas the real spirit that can overcome time itself. The difference is that his desire/spirit isnt for domination. After part 3, he uses Star Platinum on occaision, but he does not try to use it as his focus to overcome nature. He neglects the use of Star Platinum for favor of living an honest life.
    DIO is truly evil, but he's truly evil because he was morally corrupt and put in a situation where he believed he didn't need to inprove, and could realize the full extent of his corrupt nature through the power within him. Aure, he would've been a shithead without the mask, but he could've potentially changed somewhat if it weren't for the mask providing him the opportunity for even greater corruption when he most desired it.
    Sure, a completely evil character isn't the most well-rounded character that can be created, but as far as I'm concerned, Dio's story is still a tragedy. He was a manipulative opportunist given the ultimate faustian bargain: seemingly unlimited power decoid of consequence. The cards for Dio learning to be truly good were out of his hands, and so when it came a time he could actually choose, he chose what he knew to tye greatest extent he could posdibly imagine.
    Idk if Dio could've ever been truly been good, but fate and the mask made it completely impossible.

    I totally agree with you so I decided to Power scale Diego and Diego au since I think they are both strong characters and it could be a good addition to the video :)
    Diego Brando SM: To begin with, the speed of Scary Monsters can be evaluated by considering the battle between D4C and Tusk. Tusk reacted to and moved the light barrier of Love Train, Its bullets pierced through LT, suggesting that Funny Valentine had MFTL+ reaction speed. In his previous fight against Diego, without LT, Diego with SM reacted faster than regular D4C, dodging its attacks even in a 3 vs 1 situation. In one panel, it’s mentioned that Diego was faster than Valentine, implying his reaction and attack speed are MFTL+. In terms of strength, he should range from large building level+ to city block level (in a mid-high ball), and small building level+ (Low ball), with MFTL reaction, combat, and attack speeds, and his durability should be equal to his AP.
    The World AU: In my opinion, it has the same stats as DIO’s The World from Part 3, since Araki provided no information to deny or confirm it. Based on the Sun feat from Part 3, The World is many times faster than light, surpassing many other stands. Therefore, The World AU shares the same attack and reaction speed, and by the rule of three, the inertia and impact force of its blows (AP) must be the same as DIO’s The World (ranging from multi-city block level to large town level), and its durability should match its AP, as it’s seen destroying human limbs and bodies in his fight against johnny, similar to DIO’s feat of severely injuring Jotaro with a barrage of kicks before throwing the road roller at him.
    Diego Brando AU: Diego has MFTL+ reaction speeds when he did his time-stopping feat to dodge Tusk's bullets in his first appearance. Reaction speed = combat and attack speed, so Diego has those three MFTL+ speeds (reinforced by the panel where Diego and his stand simultaneously throw knives at Johnny, with Diego moving at the same speed as The world in stopped time). As for strength, during the final stretch of the race and his fight against Tusk, Diego's horse, Silver Bullet, not being a stand user, was frozen in stopped time, so logically, Diego had to keep moving his own horse while fighting with Johnny, dodging nail bullets and trying to win the race. An adult light horse can weigh up to 600 kg, so Diego, to be able to perform that feat, would have to have Class 1 lifting strength, which is the world deadlift record in real-life history (542 to 100 kg according to Fandom Wiki). This feat demonstrates Diego's skill and strength. Finally, his stand chopped off his leg with a punch, he endured it and continued fighting until he won the race. We could say that his durability and endurance are at large building level+ to city-block+.
    Diego Brando (From another world)
    AP- Wall (Even room level in a high ball)
    DC- Wall
    TS- Peak human (Far higher with Silver bullet if you want to count it :V)
    Durability & endurance: Large building level+ to city block (low-ball), multi-city block to small town (mid-ball), small town to town+ (high ball).
    Hax: Time manipulation and peak human and superhuman capabilities (Time stop with High universal range).
    The World (Au)
    AP- Town level
    DC- Small building level
    TS- MFTL (Within a range of ten meters)
    Durability: City to Multi-city block (lowball), Small town (mid-ball), Town+ (highball)
    Hax: Time manipulation, massively above superhuman attributes, massive precision, Non-physical interaction and massive movement in a 10-meter range

    I prefer Diego by a long shot (but still adore Dio) because he feels human. He feels real and he feels like he was turned into who he was from humanity's evil. Whereas Dio's whole thing is about not being human. Dio is an inhuman evil, but Diego is a human evil, which I feel makes him more interesting and scary. In addition, Diego is just more nuanced and feels far more personal and relatable than Dio who was designed to be this grandiose villain, but as a result cannot have that personal feeling Diego brings.

    I'd say that even villains who are pure evil still have their place. Sympathetic villains can often times feel generic. We have currently reached a point where sympathetic villains AND villains who try to be deep but are actually really plain (the latter ruining the reputation of the former) have created a situation where often times villains who are purely villains can feel... Refreshing.
    Though purely evil villains can still be done right, if you take for example Kirei Kotomine from the Fate series, if you take his backstory, events in Fate/Zero and all three routes of Fate/Stay Night, you see a man who is a truly despicable person, a horrible man who simply takes joy in the suffering of others, yet, at one point he tried to do good, simply because he knew that being good is what is socially acceptable. Because being good is what is right.
    It's never brought him happiness, none of it. It's only when he finally lets go, lets himself accept that what he truly enjoys most, is the suffering and pain of others, that he truly becomes happy.
    To me, that makes him a really interesting villain, he reaches a middle ground that I really adore. Him being a pure evil villain that feels so well written because, that's just who Kirei is, he was born like this, he was born evil and yet, that's what makes him compelling, because he knows what he is, as he asks himself in the end of Fate/Zero "Has my father sired such a dog?" he understands what he is and even as he says those words, he laughs.
    Regarding Diego, I feel that Diego is by all accounts a far more well developed character, who truly feels like he is better written. HOWEVER... Dio is by all accounts more charismatic than Diego and that is what makes Dio so iconic, his charisma.

    Dio is a personification of the concept of evil and acts as a foil to Joeseph who represents goodness. They're both comparatively shallow characters within the larger cast of heroes and villains that make up JJBA, but that's because they aren't primarily written to be characters. Both of them set up the larger story of the eternal fated battle between the forces of good and evil. This is juxtaposed against the absurdly unlikely way that events constantly play out to show that good will always overcome evil. The meaning at the core of the story is what makes the ridiculousness of the events that play out is what makes the manga so funny and worthwhile and it all starts with Dio and Joeseph.
    All of this is to say that Dio is meant to be less relatable because he's basically Satan and that makes him a great character.

    I think Diego and the alternate Diego are slightly different. Main world Diego didn’t care about others, but I don’t think he was kill happy. The only time he seemed close to revelling in other’s misfortune was when he believed he was killing Valentine. But that was largely due to it means he would have all of the corpse parts, and as you mentioned, a boy who started off with nothing, surpassing a super powered President of America. Meanwhile Alternate Diego seems to just revel in suffering in general. Using fans as human shields, proclaiming “this is where the fun begins” as he tried to burn Johnny with gasoline and matches and trying to force himself on a 14 year old Lucy, he’s got that ruthless ambition, but also a cruelty that the original was just short of.
