Great as ever Deen. I just wish you could have expanded upon Koopa's Town as I think it's a highlight that should have received a little more love. It's a game within itself of the other lackluster boards.
I wouldn't call star stealing and investment boards not mario party or side modes they don't change enough to be considered that and the amount of strategy that needs to change is similar to the amount when we get linear boards. To me it's feels like a board type like the star hunting and linear boards of the past where they where just considered different types.
I think the reason why this game has the different art style and is 4:3 is because of a similar reason as to why super paper Mario is so drastically different from TTYD, it’s because both games started development on the GameCube, but development ended near the launch of the wii for both games so they were converted into early wii titles(it’s why the motion controls feel forced in both games). Because they were developed on the same console as a previous game the developers wanted to make their new games stand out so they both went to change the formula. Its especially apparent in both games that they were originally GameCube games, the menus in super paper Mario are a mess and the fact that Mario party 8 isn’t even in widescreen. It’s also why both games have such heavily forced motion controls
You might be on to something. I will say Mario Party 9 runs, looks, and plays much better on the Wii than 8 does regardless of the car mechanics. Just in general it feels much more natural. You can tell it was made later on in the Wii's life
Well if you're willing to die on the hill that mp5 is better than 6 im willing to die on the hill of the board ranking for this game. 6 Haunted hideaway 5 boardwalk 4 treetop 3 warped orbit 2 excesses express 1 tycoon town. Excess express only barely matches the fun of tycoon town and while its more monopoly than mario party it improves on windmillville in every way.

Crazy work saying 8 had lackluster boards and then saying Koopas Tycoon Town is the best.
