    The problem with such comparisons is that there are multiple versions of the movie on DVD and BD. Here in Germany alone, we have three versions: one from 2009, which suffers from the same red tinge as the DVD and BD versions here, one from 2019 which has the same colour grading as the 2009 version but vastly inferior audio (owing to the transfer of rights from a German distributor, which put only English and German on the disc, to Warner Bros., which filled their disc with a multitude of dubs), and one from 2021, which has the Roger Deakins-approved colour grading as demonstrated by the 4K disc here. The low colour temperature of the BD version here has nothing to do with HDR.

    Blu-ray retains the original film coloring as opposed to digital like how 4K makes it. I personally enjoy the natural colors caught by the analog film vs digital.

      The 4K was supervised by the cinematographer of the film. That's how it's supposed to look and how it would have been seen in cinemas. There's also HDR which you won't be seeing in a youtube video but would see on a 4K tv.

    4k is the original aspect ratio intended. The HDR makes the 4k far more superior than the blu-ray. It looks filmic with realistic colors.

      Who cares about 4k bluray 1080p bluray has ps3

    • @jamyskis
      @jamyskis ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Here's the kicker though... the HDR isn't reflected in this video. This TH-cam video is purely SDR, so even on an HDR display you'll just get the SDR colour gamut translated to HDR. I usually use Firefox, which sadly isn't HDR capable, which means I have to fire up Edge from time to time just to get HDR support for a specific video. Also, "4K" isn't an aspect ratio. It's a resolution, and it's just as much 1.78:1 as 1080p (1920x1080) (footnote: these images aren't actually 1.78:1 - Shawshank Redemption is in 1.85:1, hence the very thin blank bars top and bottom).
      The various 480p resolutions of DVDs are a little more complicated but, by and large, a well-mastered DVD will compensate for the slightly-off aspect ratios through the transfer, usually with very mild cropping.
      It's only the DVD version here that distorts the aspect ratio, as is most apparent on Morgan Freeman's head there. Beyond that, it's not the HDR in the 4K version that provides the more "realistic" colours (a bizarre illusion in its own right - the use of "unrealistic" colour grading requires sheer incompetence or deliberate artistic intent). It's simply better workmanship in the authoring of the 4K disc, and I suspect that a new BD release has since been released with the improved colour grading based on the same master as the new 4K version.
      And there's a certain amount of preference involved in the colour grading between the BD and 4K versions.
      Edit: And I've just checked - here in Germany at least, there are three different prints of the movie on BD: one from 2009, which suffers from the same red tinge as the BD version here, one from 2019 which has the same colour grading as the 2009 version but vastly inferior audio (owing to the transfer of rights from a German distributor, which put only English and German on the disc, to Warner Bros., which filled the disc with a multitude of dubs), and one from 2021, which has the Roger Deakins-approved colour grading as demonstrated by the 4K disc here.

    This is a total misrepresentation. On a monitor screen the size of a laptop or a computer does not portray the picture quality when projected on equipment designed for 4K. We have a 77" LG OLED, and, believe me, there is a definite difference between DVD, Blu-ray and 4K when viewed on equipment that cannot be duplicated in a demonstration like this. The larger the screen, particularly anything 65" and above, and the quality difference is noticed immediately. On screens smaller than 65"s and the quality difference is not noted nearly as much. It depends entirely on the size of the screen and whether the equipment is designed to carry the full benefit of 4K technology, which this demonstration is not equipped to handle. There is no need to go to 4K for smaller screens, but once you go larger than a 65" screen, the more information on the 4K disc translates beautifully to a brighter, clearer, more dynamic image and better sound, depending on the quality of the sound system. The problem with this demonstration is that there is no way it can provide an accurate representation of of the 4K visual image, because it isn't designed to achieve it. It is nothing, but misleading.

    • @jamyskis
      @jamyskis ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also worth mentioning that this YT video is SDR only, which negates and misrepresents the colour grading of the 4K version, not to mention that YT's compression crushes a lot of the colour nuances of both the BD and 4K versions.
      Beyond that, I'm seeing clear differences on my 32" 1440p monitor between the BD and 4K versions here, so I wouldn't say that resolution is being unfairly represented.

    The Blu-Ray looks more brighter and colorful, 4K has a dark color pallet added to it, makes me wonder if it’s really worth the upgrade, plus 4K Ultra HD movies are extremely expensive at this point. The jump from VHS to DVD was clear, the jump from DVD to Blu-Ray was clear as well.
    As for 4K Ultra HD, the most I have seen are Demo movies in the local stores, showing nature documentaries that are filmed in true 4K quality, although I do see the difference between Blu-Ray to 4K Ultra HD, I don’t think 4K is the norm yet, let’s see what the future holds.

      I know it’s a late reply but You can’t truly see 4k movies on mobile or most portable devices as youtube doesn’t support HDR10 instead supports a weaker version of HDR. 4K is also more noticeable and better with the correct setup from your tv and input device. Watching 4k movies with a correct setup is special and makes it feel like a home theater. But the movies are pretty expensive

      I couldn't agree more! as a graphic designer and a video editor for over 10 years I grew to love and appreciate the less filters/color grading and showing what's closer to real life
      back in the 90s we had a great movies that capture the natural range and shades of colors and it was iconic but starting with early 2000s almost all movies follow the same rules
      with putting the same color grading/filters which makes it boring and loses it's appeal really quick. When I go back to watch 80s and 90s movies I love how it capture the true colors
      and all the shades and range of colors as close to the real color as possible and it works as a window to see that era and the colors in it today like shop signs and furniture etc.

WB dimmed the picture and added teal. Fucking hate when they do this! It's a classic for a reason, just remaster it properly, throw it on the disc and leave it alone, does not need to be modernised.

    I have to say that DVD quality does look more better have the original season of charmed season 8 seen the Blu rays and boy are the colors bad!!!!!! The original film of charmed is alot better I do have some Blu rays and half the time they look like a camcorder and so bad I do have alotta DVDs and when I play them on PS4 they do have a better look for some reason, if you want quality put the DVDs in a Blu ray player it actually ups the original quality and my point is no need for Blu rays half the time they are pretty bad and 4k looks even worse just pop a DVD in a Blu ray it will give you great quality and resolution!!!!! I've done it many times.....Blu rays are just not that inspiring!!!!!!!!

    This comparison should be redone, eliminate the DVD example it's useless and the 4K needs to be HDR which TH-cam can do because it's completely useless also without it.

      Utter crap you've just wrote. Most people don't even have a set up good enough to get 4K let alone good 4k.. more percentage of the population are still on 1080p displays/players than 4k.
      At least try and do some research before crying online about a topic you clearly aren't educated in.
      Streaming is nowhere near the quality of a 4kUHD Disk.
