As an American of partial West Indian descent, this is something worthwhile to learn as a part of my history. If my ancestors had gotten on a different boat, that would have been my life.
I love these "Back in Time" series!! History is my hobby, so these are fascinating for me. We usually don't get to see the everyday history of normal people. Please keep these coming!!
Hannah Matthau Yeah but a lot of the American ones are competitions or just silly. There are goods ones , but not enough where one can learn something while being entertained.
I absolutely loved this family!!! I wish I could hang out with them. They are pretty cool! Anyway, I wish the producers could have dedicated a whole series with this family for each decade like the other season. I really loved learning about life in Brixton.
I loved every minute of this documentaire. It was very educational and fun to watch. Loved the family as well. Thank you. greetings from Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Ivanisha.
what a great show....my parents moved to nz when i was ten and ive lived in NZ for most of my life ...but i was born in brixton in 1950 and i remember all the caribbeans coming during the next 10 years...so its really interesting to see what it was like back then. thanks BBC!
I am laughing so hard. Great viewing, love it. I cannot imagine what my parents generation had to go through but they got us here and did a great job securing our future. I admire the strength of the parents in this, they knew the struggle and were prepared.
Loved these two videos - I would have loved an longer look into what they faced. Was such an eye opener. Only ever heard my Grandfathers point of view - so seeing this was such a delight.
Wonderful to find another Back in Time. This family is exceptionally likable. I was surprised that two decades (plus a couple of years in the 1940's) were covered in one episode but I learned a lot. Note: a lot of East Enders lived in that kind of squalor after the war, too, because there was so much bomb damage, staying in condemned buildings for as much as 10 years. The shameful thing is that immigrants had to live in that kind of condemned housing.
It kind of reminds me of African American Culture where so many of them who first lived in Mississippi, then moved to Memphis then Chicago, Ill, Detroit, MI., or Philadelphia., PA.
They did one in Canada called "Back In Time For Dinner" where they went from the 1940's to the 2000's. I've always wanted to see A Documentary about what it's like being Black from Jamaica and coming to England. They have Lucille on Call The Midwife and I think it's great. I would love for them to do a Documentary about what it was like going to School from the 1940's to now.
There was one from 2012 called the Family Back in Time - I think 5 families over all in that one from the Edwardian period to the 1970's. If you haven't seen that one.
Forgive me for the comments but this is so fascinating. The Singer Kenny Lynch reminds me of Johnny Mathis, and when I see The Fashions it's like The Black Mad Men. You may not have much but if you had the best materials, mixing and matching is so easy and cool.
why cant the Unted States have shows like this? II kina hoooked on the bbcs take modern people and put them in hisory shows(like this and the historcal farms series)
Morena Florena I think they would. As much as I love silly tv I miss programs that used inform or bring awareness along with entertainment and a good bit of my coworkers feel the same.
im mi Please don't generalize Americans like that. I don't even watch TV because I prefer documentaries and movies most of the time. I like learning and gaining any kind of knowledge from things that I watch. And I know many many others like myself.
Very interesting! So many similarities between those from the British West Indies and those from the Dutch West Indies (I mean Netherlands Antilles)! It is clear there is a common culture in the Caribbean .... In fact that must be the African heritage
I still don,t understand why racism&hate between black&white can excist, because the black culture is so rich, music, literature, food etc is so amazing,i just wished i could learn more about the black culture,or better the just normal daily live,if i could make a wish,i don,t want money or fame,if i could live in brixton or london or the west midlands with a jamaican family it would make me so pride&happy!peae&love&unity to all black people, you,re amazing&gorgeous!!
WOWW--I am so glad they are doing this series, but I'm surprised that they are erasing the real reason British colonial subjects immigrated after WW2. It was less about "keeping the Empire together" (they used violence for that --you don't build an empire with invitations and presents but with guns)--but because England was so desperate for labor after WW2 and the losses of white male labor. Black folks came to Britain to do the jobs that everyone else refused to do or was unable to do.
God, it's like living in a British Version of a Ghetto. Yet you learn so much and if there was one thing they learned how blessed they are to have what they have.
Also let's not forget that Alot of R & B Pioneers got their start in Church. Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke who got his start in a Group called The Soul Stirrers. Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson are the Grandchildren of Ministers and several of The Temptations are the Sons of Ministers. In 1968 they met the Man who was the Archbishop of Canterbury at the time who asked them how the Young People of America were dealing with Dr. King's Death.
In The Black Community even to this Day, Church was a "Must". A former Co-Worker told me about how his Neighbors who are Black go to Church and dress to Kill. You may not have much but when you go to Church, you dressed to the Max! Andre Leon Talley talked about how the Women in his Family were Fashionistas.
Emma would have made a Brilliant University Professor. She would be perfect to do a Teaching Position for One Year at a HCBU (Historically Black College University). The kids would be blown away with the Films and the like.
It kind of parallels how Southern Blacks from Mississippi, and Tennessee who migrated to Chicago, Detroit, Indiana, New York, Philadelphia and even Los Angeles for a better life. When Smokey Robinson did his Family Tree he discovered his Family (Mother's Side) was from New Orleans, LA.
What is the difference in 2017 compared to 1950? Now it is Mexican people living the same way!. 8 people living in a one bedroom apartment!. 3 families 3 kids each small efficiency apartment!.
That White Lady did what was done in The US especially The South. However I remember reading Coronation Street, The War Years where Elsie Tanner made extra money by taking in Black Soldiers from The US as Boarders. I would have loved to have been a Storyline where the Grandchild of one of the Soldiers came to visit The Street.
I find it funny that a so called Christian church would not accept black people into the fold. Think about this, those in Christ are neither Jew nor Gentile, black nor white. You get the jist. I will say this these religions are not Christian. Christianity is not a religion it is a relationship. Lastly I love Janet. She is tough. Lol!
I remember a Jamaican guy who was a porter in london , he used to say aksing instead of saying asking ! I thought that a jamaican way of speaking english ! Just like that guy said is instead of are !
Also if they were in America in 1962, they would be watching Soap Operas that The African American Community would call "The Stories". They'd either watch Guiding Light, Search For Tomorrow, or As The World Turns all owned by The Soap Company Proctor & Gamble that manufactured products like Mr. Clean, Tide Laundry Detergent and Crest Toothpaste or American Bandstand that would be on 90 Minutes per day.
I love this series but they should make it truly trans-formative. Set up a White family to experience the life of an immigrant from Africa/West Indies/India so they can see how life was. Watching it happen to other races even in this medium isn't enough to make them truly understand how it was. In fact, let's have a Back in Time for Dinner during slavery and see how they fare.
I want to go back in time! why isn't it like this now?. Women were so different back then. Pretty Hair styles and Women wearing Dresses so Lady like Ooooo i want a Time Machine!. You're Freakin Hot You're Freakin Hot You're Freakin Hot You're Freakin Hot!.
Interesting how the white family in the first series of this show got an entire episode per decade, versus this. Also, could they not have found a better presenter for this show than Giles-Bloody-Coren, potentially the whitest man in Britain after Jacob Rhys-Mogg and Nigel Farage?
As an American of partial West Indian descent, this is something worthwhile to learn as a part of my history. If my ancestors had gotten on a different boat, that would have been my life.
I am addicted to all these series. Love the Back in time Dinner ones as well.
I love these "Back in Time" series!! History is my hobby, so these are fascinating for me. We usually don't get to see the everyday history of normal people. Please keep these coming!!
Keat Perkins I also love these types of "reality" shows. I wish America would produce some.
I really loved learning about life in Brixton.
anthrogirl123 same.
I loved every minute of this documentaire. It was very educational and fun to watch. Loved the family as well. Thank you.
greetings from Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
Ivanisha.
Is het niet de zelfe in Nederland?
Love those parents. That an attitude to survive and keep whole family.
This was so amazing to watch. I remember hearing my grandparents telling me how they left Jamaica and went to New York. Well done!
Ayyy Trinidad and Tobago brought the carnival vibration and calypso and steelpan wow we brought a beautiful thing...love!!!
what a great show....my parents moved to nz when i was ten and ive lived in NZ for most of my life ...but i was born in brixton in 1950 and i remember all the caribbeans coming during the next 10 years...so its really interesting to see what it was like back then. thanks BBC!
i love the parents! theyre amazing.
Wonderful world, beautiful people! Says it all!!
i love these documentaries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am laughing so hard. Great viewing, love it. I cannot imagine what my parents generation had to go through but they got us here and did a great job securing our future. I admire the strength of the parents in this, they knew the struggle and were prepared.
I love this Show i have never heard of it before. The Nationality act of 1965 whoo hooo!.
I wish that they wouldve given this family as long of a series as the other back in time families. 😒
totally enjoyed watching the WHOLE documentary, now thats a first...this week.
what a GREAT show
I think all should try this if only for a day.
We are spoiled today compared to what our parents had...
I've been looking for something like this!!!! Thank you thank thank you. wow!
This is why we should capitalize on the sacrifices of our ancestors!
that would make waaay too much sense. too much for blacks.
I learned a lot from this short series. Great stuff. Been enjoying all these Back in Time series.
This is cool 😎. They should do way more of these.
Very nostalgic!
Loved these two videos - I would have loved an longer look into what they faced. Was such an eye opener. Only ever heard my Grandfathers point of view - so seeing this was such a delight.
Brilliant cultural history... Rather creative.
Absolutely fascinating...LOVED this & learned so much!
I love it omg this family is so lovely I love this episode!!!

Bread and condensed milk ooookaaay!
Yes we still do that in Trinidad and tobago taste nice .
Loved this, excellent
Fabulous can't wait for the next episode
It kind of reminds me of African American Culture where so many of them who first lived in Mississippi, then moved to Memphis then Chicago, Ill, Detroit, MI., or Philadelphia., PA.
They are beautiful people inside and out
They did one in Canada called "Back In Time For Dinner" where they went from the 1940's to the 2000's. The CBC is making there own version of the tv series back in time for dinner.
I had no idea there was a new Back in Time series. And another one is coming in 2017...
Kristi Marie what will it be called?
Further Back in Time. It's going to focus on foods from 1900-1949, and there will be another family experiment.
Kristi Marie i've just finished the 2017 season, this looks interesting !
There was one from 2012 called the Family Back in Time - I think 5 families over all in that one from the Edwardian period to the 1970's. If you haven't seen that one.
Greetings from cape town this is absolutely beautiful

Yessssssssss!!!!!!!! Love this!!!

ursulajoni15 I know right!
Do you think mainstream Americans would watch historical things like this without exaggerated drama?
it could be a netflix, or hulu type show that dosen't need to rely on mainstream tastes to be successful.
I feel so proud 🇹🇹
All.the.good.and.bad.memories.comeing.back.from1956...1993
it was a glimpse into the past for me and very much a part of my family history. I enjoyed it even if some parts were a little staged.
Very interesting! So many similarities between those from the British West Indies and those from the Dutch West Indies (I mean Netherlands Antilles)! It is clear there is a common culture in the Caribbean .... In fact that must be the African heritage
That is true
Emma (the social historian) is so beautiful 😍
Giles sat closer to her than he has to any woman on any of his tv shows-he noticed..lol

Boy I thought that Dot Cotton's Flat on Eastenders was a mess not to mention the The Fowler Clan back in 1985.

the Brixton diet-condensed milk on toast, corned beef and national bread
it must have been quite a come down to go from caribbean food to old bread and spam
A Jamaican straw mat on the wall for dad I guess but the family had Grenada connections by the mom and that mat would more likely have been Grenadian.

if the cost of living in America now was the same as 60 years ago would life be better?

Great !! I hope the same for the French descendants of North African's
peoples...
You know we've come a long way to see a Young White Tailor waiting on a Black Man never would have happened in 1962.

Forgive me but didn't anyone think to maybe clean and sterilize these houses. Beggars can't be choosers.
Wait, Giles is narrating this? This programme is not about food!
