I think it would play better if the outsiders who interact with the families were also in period costumes.

I can really relate to the Meadows family loosing everything when Dad lost his position. The economy hit me hard recently and I had to sell everything. It IS humiliating when you've supported yourself for 30 years and now can't do that. I'm just glad my daughter was already grown and I didn't have to deprive her of anything.
Sorry to hear of your change in circumstances, even though it's 9 years since you posted, I lost my home & had to move back in with my parents due to a long term health collapse, such changes are no fun, I hope your circumstances have improved in the intervening time.

This was 'good' TV in the 90s and 00s. Educational, informative, and something the entire family could watch together.
I love this series so much! I don't live in the UK, but it is defiantly showing me a lesson on not to take anything I have today for granted. In the first episode, I was emotional to think some of the things that all three classes had to endure. Wonderful show, I am enjoying it and learning a great amount about past societies.

this is great series! I like how it's multiple families that interact with each other, which is better than just looking at one family unit. It's interesting with the different social classes aswell.

I had a similar washing machine in the late 60's, it was all we could afford and my fingers went through the mangle a couple of times, it was excruciating!
This is a great series. It shows me how very weak I am and how I need to improve my attitude in life. Appreciate all that I have and how I need to some respect for my ancestors.

It's awful to think that so many people had to live like that with no hope of bettering themselves, my grandma has all these stories about sharing one outdoor toilet between 15 people living in two houses

There will always be those who serve the bread, and those who eat the bread. This has not changed in all of human history, and will not for the foreseeable future, regardless of the government or society.
Many working class people (particularly in poverty stricken areas such as the East End of London) didn't have indoor plumbing until well after WWII.
I absolutely love the bird print wallpaper in the dining room of the upper class house!
Marym: In those days eggs were delivered fresh to peoples homes within days. The eggs that we buy in our supermarkets are much older than that.

Think the show explains why working class didn't have plumbing or other luxuries, there wasn't the money for such improvements, they were occupied continually getting food on the table and keeping their accommodation. Home probably was also rented.

This series is absolutely interesting. As good as lucy worsley's series about the kitchen, bedroom, badroom n living room. I love these series.

We've gone full circle within a centuries time with the money divide worldwide. This show made me aware we are stepping back in monetary equality.
This episode was depressing to me because it rings home so much...I started off dirt poor, got educated, -stuck my foot into the middle class, had the door slammed shut on my foot and now I'm selling off my possessions to pay the rent, and to no avail....with bad health from my original poverty on top of it all...

LOL @ the music from Downton Abbey in the beginning of this episode. Downton was very firmly Edwardian. Downton's music would have been a better fit for the last episode. Absolutely love these shows nonetheless. I'm American, but only 3rd generation, and half my family comes from Wales, so it's interesting to see how my own ancestors may have lived.

David Grayson it is actually those that forget the past are doomed to repeat it. So while some people still feel the same way about things through the generations, others are changing themselves and those around them. As long as people try to make things better and not stand by while the world burns, there is always a way for change.

After learning more about epigenetics, I wonder if if it also applies to these families. Do the meadows strive to constantly better themselves because their ancestors did and had to for survival ? Do the Taylors enjoy spending more time with family and not like silence because of their ancestors being stuck in high society?

My mum had a twin washing machine when she was growing up. I know she's 60 and lived a modest life in the country. But I didn't know that they were invented that early. They had it all the way into the 80s
I am 58 and never heard of them. I know that they now make combo washer/dryer in one barrel, but nobody had the double barrel things like on this show here when I was growing up. Or ever. 😂
I used one until the mid 2000s. Hotels still do.

Bad time for me to come in just after watching Hidden Killers. I was worried someone was gonna lose a hand on those mangles and the electric ones scare me even more because if her fingers get caught there's no stopping it from taking her whole arm.

I remember when I was little in the 1970s my mom used one of those old wringer washers when our modern one went out. It came from my Grandfather. We used it till we could afford a new one. My clothes were very clean! That washer cleaned excellent. It was a lot of fun using it at first sending clothes through the wringer etc.. When we got a new washer I realized how lucky we were to just throw the clothes in a modern washer. It was a great experience for me to understand how modern conveniences affect our lives. About prejudices, my husbands family also changed their last name in the 1940s too.

I live in a 100+ y/o building in NYC. Back in 1900, the toilet was in the backyard & there was gaslight (gas lines are still evident) but by 1914, indoor plumbing was added with a bathtub & sink in the kitchen & a small closet for the toilet.. I'm surprised that there was still no indoor plumbing for working class people in Britain after WWI.
WWI, described as an economic catastrophe for the UK, set them back. A very different situation from the US.
I love to watch these Kind of TV series here on TH-cam. it's a great pity, that the German TV not produces such Shows like BBC. I find it so interesting to watch like people live in former times and what they had eaten and so on.

Really highlights the problem with today's kids who aren't even able to carry out basic tasks because their parents do everything for them ,haven't made that mistake with my kids.

Really the meadows are COMPLAINING about eating leftovers my mum and dad are working their arses off to make enough money for bills and food. So while they sit around and complain I'll be happily watching them suffer while eating nice warm LEFTOVER tacos thank you very much. Case closed.

Sue Harvey They needed something to stand on and look at. I would imagine they had to send it back to the store or maybe there was someone who was still able to afford to buy the stuff.
Privateers probably bought those things.
So this one covered two decades? I found it strange they skipped WWI and just went to Post War World I and the Great Depression which was more hard hit in the United States. Also I feel like if they are going to live in the past, they shouldn't have modernity co-existing in certain scenes. I know it's hard for everyone to go "period" but it would have made it more authentic.
I know, I would've loved to see the families during the war, but I thought it tied together nicely. And actually Germany was hit the hardest with the Great Depression because of the unfair requirements of the treaty of Versailles.
WWI was obviously a huge economic drain for Britain. The building I live in is also a tenement but got plumbing & electricity long after middle-class dwellings of the same era.

I think they're going to come in at the time when their parents' generation would have immigrated to Britain, so maybe not until the 50s or 60s.
I remember hearing from English Jews in the 60s about Mosely, the Blackshirts and Cable Street. One old boy summed it up as "They tried to kill us, they failed, let\s eat."
So sad in those day's god so sad for them people back then especially the Jew's 😢❤terrible 😢

I confess that it is nice to see the spoiled ones have to actually work-yes, the girls are pretty, and there is no crime there, but in my house, even though my parents were upper middle class, I worked my rear off! When my dad wasn't working killer shifts, we were re-painting houses & selling them for extra money. It paid off, & when I went off to work myself, I was ever too good to wait on anyone or do their nails & THAT served me well. While may clients were girls like me, my attitude was OK!

The Taylor's are NOT playing the part! And not cut for that lifestyle! Adele as no interest, no conversation, no class, no grace! She does not know how to carry herself, how to occupy herself and her only personality is living trough her children. Plus, they are constantly joking around with the staff and saying thank you and please all the time as if they needed to show compassion or gratefulness.
In the Edwardian period she would sit around the house doing nothing..not reading, not writing… not talking… ahhhggg!!! you can give someone a university degree and a job and the possibility of being a house and goods…but il will not make them interesting human beings.

This is how I do it. If the eggs are bought cold then in to the fridge they go. If they eggs are bought from like at a farmers market or farm or not refrigerated, unless told otherwise then I wouldn't put them in the fridge. I've also heard that if you take good eggs fresh or refrigerated and rub them in mineral oil they are said to last longer and don't need to be refrigerated.
lol my mother had the perfect tool to clear children out of the way, it was called WORK, LOL, if you dared hang out in her way she would put a dust or dish rag in your hand. It di not take long for you to clear out. The little boy is adorable.

The Bible speaks of the headship arrangement at 1 Corinthians 11:3 and Ephesians 5:23. Mrs. Meadows mention at the end of the video that women in the 1920-1930's era might have felt "empowered," while men might have felt "emasculated." Could this era have started the break down of many families we see today?
So Fascism is wrong, but Segregation in a Jewish Church based on gender is OK?. Double standards. It's all right to oppress a Woman for Religious and Domestic purposes, but not all right to do it to a whole Community?. What am I missing here?.
