@@CaryHawkins Question: At 7:30, you somehow highlight half the cup and delete it. Mine deletes the entire object every time. How are you getting it to only delete the lower half? I’ve watched over and over and can’t figure out what you’re doing differently than I am. Then again, mine didn’t make straight lines to start. It was all those curves I had to mess with. Does it have something to do with that? I couldn’t figure out how to make plain straight lines without that annoying curve thing coming up though. I couldn’t easily just lower the path either. Things always look so easy on the tutorials. Then you try it and nothing works right. LoL.Thanks for any help you can give.
@@CaryHawkins Thanks so much for your response. Unfortunately, Illustrator got upset with me for having it open along with Premiere, Photoshop, another video application, three Excel documents, two Word documents, and three web browsers all at once with multiple video & creative projects going. It said I didn't have enough RAM. Go figure. I'm sure you're as shocked as I am. But I may try this from scratch sometime again just for fun, especially since it's so quick and I just found it so neat. I might still be too green with Illustrator though. Nonetheless, still a very cool tutorial regardless.
I made a copy of the entire shape, then double-clicked the top copy to go into isolation mode. Next, I deleted the lid from the copy and exited isolation mode.
Cary, so I love to modify cars in Photoshop. What I do is I use the lasso tool and carefully follow the contours of the car body while depressing the mouse button and slowly moving it around the forms and then sometimes having to come up to the top of the selection to keep the selection consistent until I've encircled the whole body... maybe, you don't see what I described anyway to the point! I would like to use the pen tool then convert the pen work into a selection! I was shown this years ago but since forgot... can you help!?
I've used Blender too. Blender has more options overall, and it's also more difficult to use imo. Illustrator is great for these quick products that aren't very complex.
I took the flower as a symbol but I cannot see it. it is somehow behind the color of the cup ..what did I do wrong?! I'm lost :) I took surface 6 as you did,, but I can only see it when I check "disable geometry" .. I don't understand why it's overlapping ..
Thanks great tutorial i've been looking for how to create packages and this is it man atleast now coffee cup check. Just a little question though, how would you apply this say to a potato chips package with the jagged edge at the top and bottom.
That kind of package would be better suited for Adobe Dimension. I think it has a chip bag standard model too. I have a few tutorials on how to use it if you need.
Thanks! I have another similar one on building a wine bottle. Also, I just made a video showing how you can do the same thing using Adobe Dimension. If you have the creative suite, it's worth a look.
So, there are a number of engineering programs out there ie Solidworks. I'd like to ask have you been able to or is there a way to build say an assembly in Illustrator..? The 3D programs have a way to rotate your part or assembly... What have you found? Also, I thought it would be great if Adobe would develop a full 3D program (For the Apple)...
I'm not familiar with solidworks. Adobe has Dimension software which is good for mockups in 3d. It's not a full blown 3d software, but I have a recent tutorial showing how to use it.
Your video really helped although I am trying to make sure the logo (when cut and stuck on the cup) is not distorted. does this process help with that?
Sometimes you just have to adjust it visually. In this video, I stretched mine out a bit so it would look natural. Illustrator isn't a 3D software, so it's a little limited.
I didn't understood that how did u did the differentiation of the upper portion and cup what actually u said wasn't understood that time can u please explain
I just copy the path and delete what I don't need. For the lid, just delete the anchor points that make up the main part of the cup. You can use the direct selection tool or the minus anchor point tool.
You probably have something else selected. Click off the object first. Then only click the line segment between two anchor points. If you click an anchor point, it will move that. If you just click the line segment between two anchor points, it should move that segment with the anchor points on either end of it.
So, after doing this, does this become a manipulatable 3D object? For example can I take that object, export it to like after effects and all of those 3d faces will be interpreted correctly by the camera field in after effects? Thanks for the video!
You might see if your graphics card is being used to render the cup. If memory serves, it's under view at the top somewhere. I'll write back if I got that wrong.

@@moonbeam0124 gradients and 3D objects don't mix well in Illustrator. You could make the 3D object, expand it, then paste a copy of the parts you want to the front, add a gradient that, and then play around with transparency settings. Multiply or hard light would probably be good places to start. You might try swapping which object is in front too. It could look like this, ordered front to back: gradient layer set to multiply, original 3D layer, OR original 3D layer set to multiply, gradient layer. Play with the percentage of transparency to get it to look how you want. Let me know if that gets you the desired effect.

Sometimes that rounding cursor doesn't appear. You might try messing with your object. If there are actually too many points, maybe right next to each other, then you might not be able to see it. Try recreating the shape and see if it appears. You might also try removing any curve between points. Under the pen tool area of your toolbar, there is an upside down looking V. Use that tool to straighten the curve of the point you want to round. Hopefully something in here does the trick.
