I am a designer for more than 2 decades. A lot has evolved esp the tools, which makes it easy to work with. It can be presented to the client well, which means, a high chance of getting the project. IMO. This is a great video you created, even w/o these you can do the design. It always the creativity that matters.
Absolutely! A great designer is a great designer with whatever tool they choose to use! Just like knowing everything there is to know about a software doesn't make you a good designer hahahaha. Thanks for the support!
I'm an self learning graphic designer...all my information come from You great youtuber...youtube is my online university...I appreciate great video an content from you an everybody else who continue to enlight me on my Journey to become an graphic designer an video editor...peace an ❤😅love...
It looks really good! Thanks so much for doing the step by step guide. Would you consider flipping the front of pack to the other face? The fold line will look cleaner with the fold line on the top edge.
I say this is very Good. I am still trying to wrap my head on why I would need Illustrator for packaging other than the layout, when photoshop is great for that. But to come to a point where an illustration graphic can be done solely in Illustrator astonishes me, I've been out in the graphics world for a while, I just came back and it amazes me how everything is so evolve.
While Photoshop has the flexibility to work with graphic design, it is still heavily focused on raster editing (like photography and digital art). Illustrator, for the matter of graphic design, offers you a far bigger array of possible tools to work with, and that's not to mention that Illustrator is meant to work with vector graphics, something that Photoshop can't do, and vectors are way more friendly with printing. Pick any big brand printing thousands of packages and I bet none of them will be making package design on Photoshop (save for editing separate images that they'll later bring to Illustrator). And, to be honest, I don't really understand your point when you say "to come to a point where an illustration graphic can be done solely in Illustrator". I mean, Illustrator was released in 1987 and it's been the main software for graphic design for at least 2 decades now.
@@AndyTellsThings I meant photo oriented packaging is solely on photoshop, but with better image trace in illustrator now even some photograph can be converted to vector based with 90% image retention.

Such a cool tutorial. Just when I thought I am getting the hang of illustrator and now Pacdora looks so cool. What's the difference with the two and can one do all label, packaging designs including mockups in one single software.
Hi! Well, there are some sort of limitations for what you're wanting. Packaging is usually made with vectors, while mockups use raster images. You surely can make mockups in Illustrator, there's even a new tool for that, but you can only get so much out of it hahaha. A part of being a designer is, unfortunately, juggling multiple softwares to do everything we need.
Hi Andy, i use always Indesign for making a packaging . Maybe I’m wrong but i have more flexibility in text editing … I use Illustrator more to make designs, elements, logo, icons, … and I place this in Indesign (still my favourite for finishing artwork). The same with diecut , open in ai , copy paste in Indesign. Nice 👍🏻 work Andy, maybe … I have to change my workflow. What do you think about using Indesign, pro & cons.
Hey! I wouldn't say InDesign is wrong for this, but it is a software geared towards editorial designs, so magazines, books and stuff with lots of pages. If it works for you, I can't say it's wrong :) I don't have much knowledge in InDesign, so I couldn't say much about pros and cons hehe. Keep on, and thanks for commenting!
After adding the mountains to both sides to cover the glue and bleed do you create a clipping mask to form it to the shape of the dieline so that you aren't seeing the rest of the overhang?

You'd usually have your .ai file set up in the right dimensions and export it to PDF using CMYK. Then there's a whole lot of PDF presets, like X-1a or X-3 which will offer you different levels of like compatibility, specially when the printer hasn't provided you with specs. I can't really explain it all through here, but you can surely find a lot about it online!
Okay, I just had to comment after that brilliant voice over 😂🤍 And the much needed drawing skills alert, I wasn't ready. This man is both precious and incredibly talented. The entire video was so helpful for a beginner in product packaging, so thank you :')
Thanks. This is supposed to be a premium and quite expensive product, which usually won't use images of the product itself on the packaging. People who are buying it know it is coffee - it's in the coffee section, among other coffees, in a place you go to buy premium coffee. You don't >have< to have a coffee bean on your package, unless you need people to understand it is coffee. It's not like you can differentiate a good coffee from a bad coffee by the (probably stock) image of a coffee bean on the package.
Is it possible to upload my own dieline in Pacdora or does it only work with the templates they have? I ask because the ones I found aren't 100% exactly like the one we use at the time for our packaging. Also is there a way to save like angles from multiple viewpoints so it will be exact for the whole product line?
Hi there! I believe you can't upload your own dieline, but the ones that are available are highly customizable. Have you tried changing the measurements on one of the templates? But well, to be totally honest, I'm not 100% sure on this, this video was uploaded a few months ago and as far as I've been following Pacdora along, they've been updating a lot of things. I'd call their support team to be sure and ask further questions!
Hey Andy, at 5:56 the rectangle you create snaps into place, so it matches up with the other ones. Could you tell me how to use this? Great content btw :D
Hi! That's a standard feature of Illustrator, it's called Smart Guides. They just... appear, automatically. They can be turned on and off, though. Check the View Menu > Smart Guides and make sure it's ✅.
Hello Andy. I have a question about stationery mockups: On Behance I have seen some samples that look very good and I would like to get a very similar result (showing stationery designs in a "flat" way is, to say the least... boring and lacking in appeal) but I don't know in what programs are they made, and I was wondering if illustrator can be used with good results or is it another software. I've "played" a bit with shadows and 3D in illustrator, but couldn't get something similar... I don't know if it's not the right program, or if it's my lack of expertise -or both- (I've also seen your video on 3D, very good , thank you!). So... Could you guide me about it please? 🤔... Thank you! 🙂🙏
Hi Ernesto! I don't think you'll have much success using Adobe Illustrator to create the final mockups. A good alternative is to use the sponsor of the video, Pacdora. I truly believe they are a great solution to 3D mockups and at a very fair price. Other option is to use something like Adobe Dimension, but I have no experience in it... but I know it's for mockups! Hehe :) Thanks for asking!
@@AndyTellsThings Yes of course! I also thought about Pacdora (the price is more than acceptable, cost-benefit is very good!) and in fact I visited their website but I only saw thousands and thousands of packages, but I did not perceive any option for stationery... Although I stayed thinking if it would "only" be a matter of uploading the layout made in illustrator and the site would do "its magic"... Would it also work for stationery design mockups?
If its only duplicating a single path, you're probably using the wrong tool - the Direct Selection Tool (white cursor, shortcut A). This tool indeed selects individual paths or anchor points. You can select the entire vector object by using the Selection Tool (black cursor, shortcut V). Hope that's it! :)
how you get the right measure ment for your mock ups and a box like structure like you created in 7:06 sec. ? plz hepl me to go ahead with your use full content
Well, if you watch the video you'll know that I used a website for the dielines and made up any measurements. Traditionally, your client will give you the info about measurements.
Just i wonder should I design brand identity for a client 3 designs or just one and sent for him and how do I know the size and shape of the box? Does the client send me the measurements and shape, or does the designer have to design the shape and size???
How many designs you'll send is up to you. It's good to offer choices, yes, but that depends on what your client has asked. If they give you very strict requirements, sometimes a single option may be enough. As for the box, it's usually up to the client, as they are the ones responsible for buying the packages and actually packaging the product, which can have big impacts on their budget.
Hi! These are called Variable Fonts. The font needs to have been made to be used as a variable font, so it won't work with every font. If the font is a variable font, an icon will appear in Illustrator, right next to the font size, with a few sliders to change its sizes :)
