      I did have a few such characters from Sharpe in mind when I was painting him.

      @leonleese4919 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes they are just the sort of nondescript character that is needed. I was thinking of adding a +1 on a generals dice that will help with confidence and decision making with General d Armee.

    I read the Bernard cornwell Waterloo book during lockdown- an excellent narrative approach to the story that was really insightful

      @@MiniatureRealms funny enough I had started to re-listen to Bernard Cornwells Waterloo again.

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve just listened to that myself. In many ways similar to the one I recommend, though with less detail, and Cornwell clearly thinks The Prince of Orange was as bad as he writes his character in the novel, while Clayton gives the slightly less (and maybe more modern) less damning view of him.

    Nice update. While my stuff is here I’ve decided to prioritise a few smaller projects that I can get some use out of straight away. I can then get stuck into the Epic project in earnest.
    I enjoy podcasts and audio books when I’m painting too. Trouble is I’m so focused on the painting I find I only hear about 50% then have to go and listen again LOL.
    The Peninsular War Atlas has arrived too so that’ll give me plenty to read, along with the stack of other Napoleonic period books. Once the Epic project gets underway though I’ll be able to give it my full attention, from the reading side too.

    Good update, it's great to see this lot coming together. I use 7mm dice for shock in various games, using those Pendrakon dice holders. They work really nicely in games and don't stand out too much. The idea to make them into little vignettes is great. I read the Clayton book on Waterloo a few years ago and I agree it is an excellent overview of the battle and campaign.

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Alex. I think I’ll end up using those little dice and holders for quite a few games now, a really simple and effect solution.

  • @johnkitchen2924
    @johnkitchen2924 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    For my Epic ACW armies I’m using the 5mm Pendraken dice and frames combined with the wounded figures on a 20mm round base behind the unit. With the colour indicating the state of the unit and the value indicating the wounds taken. As I’m using the 3 bases to a Battalion your mounted Officer solution also solves the square problem for me; brilliant. In a further twist I’m saving all the middle non-command stands to make my British Guard units. I was going to put a mounted officer in the middle of a stand to represent the command - now I’m going to place it on a 20x20mm and use it the same way; brilliant².

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the idea of using casualties on the base, I got the Epic ACW ones but never did anything with them. I’ll likely file the number off and add a 5mm dice and frame.

    An excellent idea with that small dice tray. I think that came out looking quite nice. As soon as I finish my current Audible book I will give that Clayton book a look. If you are ever looking for a recommendation for something on the ACW to listen to just hit me up. My current listen and a few others I’ve picked up have been quite good.

    The longer it’s taking me to paint the figures, the more and more I’m considering getting the premised scenery packs. I just don’t want to spend time scratch building the sand pits and orchards, etc.
    I’m also looking for something cool to identify each unit. I’d love to have some form of labeling for each regiment. But I still have time since i have loads to paint still. Thanks for sharing these videos! Really helps keep the motivation flowing

    The only reasonable 7mm blanks I have found are wooden beads (eBay / craft stores) - I would expect a company on Alibaba would make them but it would be by the thousands...The beads come with a hole and normally varnished but may suffice.
    Maybe a 3D printer would create a few for a reasonable cost - resin I think would be best.
    You can get red plastic ones with a heart in white - been thinking about two of these to denote damage for a 'three hits and you are out' marker.

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Andrew, I’ll have a search again, I found loads of blanks and beads, just only 8mm or larger. 3D printing is a good idea.

      The ale Haye Sainte set is separate (though I think it might still be available in some bundles), each starter does have a building though. All Sarissa Precision, available through Warlord, but I’d imagine they will be available from Sarissa soon as well.

    ...Have to say though: I do feel game engine props, for me, detract from the immersion (unless casualty bases or wrecked caissons or things appropriate model wise). Being a nobby hobby snob, I feel, record keeping should be kept off table. Though this may stem from attending conventions where gorgeous looking tables and figures were ruined (for me), (not sure on the rules system) by hanging plastic rings/washers on the minis to record cohesion/moral loss/casualties [80's-90's 'ish]. Big yak!!! Though in all fairness the practice almost represents a game engine slickness quite reminiscent of computer game HUDs. So horses for courses in conclusion. The officer dice marker tray did look well engineered and not too obtrusive for an obtrusive thing!.

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally get you, I don’t mind a few things but some games can get out of hand. I think a lot of games where it’s most prevalent is where it’s important for it to be clearly visible what the status of many units/effects are. I actually quite like it where it can be recorded on cards off the table, but space can be an issue. Because Black Powder doesn’t have figure removal I think something is needed, but little casualty markers could be good as well.

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Paul Brockhurst This is happening a lot more, I first used a system like that for Warmachine, you could use a mode where both opponents could see each other’s progress on the app as well. Warlord are working on a list building app (though it’s all gone a bit quiet on that front since the announcement video), there was tracking for ships on Black Sails etc. The problem is some people hate using tech as much as others hate game aids on the table.
