Hi, I'm Bekki. I'm here to give you you some of the differences between a gas forge and a coal forge. Obviously, size is one major difference. The gas forge is much more compact - obviously you can have it two burners, single burner, whatever. These [gas forges] are hooked up to a propane tank, and they are a lot more restricted on your room on the inside of the forge.
On the coal forge, you have all of the top of the forge, you've got a huge fire, you are not restricted by room and are able to work around it.
Here [on the gas forge], you have just this tiny little space on the inside. Most of the time, for blacksmiths, I recommend that you get one with open ends, which means that not only can you open up the front, but you have portholes on both sides that you can put your pieces of work on either side, let it heat up, and be able to pull it out. While one is being worked on, the other piece is getting heated up.
Gas forges, while they are a lot more compact, they are more friendly in smaller environments such as subdivisions where your neighbors might complain about smoke from a coal or coke forge. The gas forge does not smoke, you don't need a lot of huge ventilation though you want to make sure you have a good intake of air, but you don't need a chimney or anything like that. The disadvantage with this [gas forge], besides being a smaller fire box, is that it is louder. It also takes a little bit longer for the gas forge to get your piece up to forge-welding temperature. But, on the bright side, it is a lot more compact, so you don't have to worry about trying to set up your forge or your shop or your garage to accomodate not only your large coal forge, you don't have to put a hole in your ceiling to accomodate for ventilation, or do a chimney. You're able to put it on a gas forge stand and wheel it wherever you'd like.
While both of them [gas and coal forges] are fantastic for forging, there are disadvantages and advantages to both a coal and gas forge.
