    this is lovely - please never stop sharing your insights. As someone who is not a superhero fan, I am having a great time seeing your unique collection and I'm learning so much! Would you happen to have a libib? If that's available for you and of interest - personally, I'd love to see a list of your collection in written form to reference when looking for new reads - wonderful content, thank you!

      Thank you so much for your kind words; it has meant a lot to me. And unfortunately, no, I don't have a text record anywhere as I find one platform too much to handle as it is! I do have an organization of playlists on the channel page that I hope has a curation-like effect if you're interested! Cheers!

      @ftloc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Karson Phillips Thanks and yes, I’ve been thinking about a video on strips for a while now. I can’t decide if I want to spotlight one or do a list or an overview...I do want to make it interesting to watch so as soon as I figure out the best way, there’ll be a video. Contenders are Peanuts and Calvin and Hobbes, of course, but like Little Nemo, perhaps Krazy Kat, Gasoline Alley or other older strips could also be of interest? Then there’s the newer webcomics - a rabbit hole that’s limited, as always, by what I’ve read and own. Watch this space and all suggestions welcome!

    whoa! excellent journey through your entire collection, man it was an awesome trip!
    there is a surprising number of books present here which are also in my wish-list!
    would love a peek inside 'the hip hop family tree' sets, which i'll grab for sure after i manage to somehow save 7k!
    and after watching this, i'm looking forward to get 'the tale of one bad rat' (because the artwork looks like miller's the dark knight returns, which i love) and 'king of the flies' (because the artwork resembles burns' x'ed out series, which again i love!)
    speaking of which, do get your hands on 'sugar skull', the final part of the burns' trilogy ASAP and get your mind blown!
    PS- that hand gesture during the flight 714 to 'sydney' made me smile :)

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hip Hop Family Tree is a truly monumental work in many ways, but most of all in how readable and fast moving it is, through dozens and dozens of years and a hundred characters!
      Talbot’s style isn’t immediately reminiscent of Frank Miller but you’re right - the colouring is quite similar; I’d never noticed it before!
      And yes, I’m probably getting Sugar Skull soon and I’ll do a complete re-read of the first two just before that. Who knows, maybe I’ll find a new love for it! 😀

    holy crap! I didn't know Glenn Gould had a biography comic! I need that now (yes, I am Canadian)!
    I am probably the only one but I think Satania is better than Beautiful Darkness, because it is one of the few comics that is able to capture an HP Lovecraft type of claustrophobia in giant spaces. I have wanted to get Beauty and Miss Don't Touch Me for years but it's out of print and even libraries can't get it in (I've given up and have started to take french courses so I can read this kind of stuff eventually).

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the Gelnn Gould comic and I think that's also a great observation you have about Satania. I obviously love Satania as well, and mention it and Beauty alongside Beautiful Darkness in my Top 10 Fantasy Comics video. I'm thinking of learning French myself, to read all these terrific editions that never see English translations! 😋
      Speaking of Miss Don't Touch Me and Beauty, I only just heard about the death of Hubert earlier this year, in the comments of my Richard Sala eulogy video. How devastatingly sad!

    • @haywoco2
      @haywoco2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ftloc I normally read it in the original Japanese, but it's going to be such a handsome set that I think I'll even buy it in English this time. Unfortunately nothing this nice has been released on the Japanese side, so we're in the strange situation where the best release of Berserk may not be in its native language. I will tell you that the story only truly gets going in what will be the second Deluxe release, so give it time if you find the opening kind of slow. It's truly an amazing epic and a triumph of the imagination.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's great that you have the option between languages though - I am always limited to the English editions of things from Japan or Europe!
      Re: Beserk, I have definitely been intrigued and heard enough praise from people whose opinion I respect that I went straight for the deluxe instead of the paperbacks. Thanks for the tip - I've seen often that great epic stories need some time to 'clear their throat' and set the stage so I don't mind waiting a bit. I do balk when someone says 'It gets really good in Volume 9' or 'in Season 5 though! 😀

      @ftloc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, you've caught one of my peculiar habits. Hasib and the Queen of Serpents is a shiny new book and the Tintin at Sea is a well-worn used book. On my cheap shelves, I tend to put more dilapidated books at the ends to take the friction against the shelf wall, basically thinking they can take the shelf wear and be none the worse and maybe the shiny books will stay shiny a little longer. Not necessarily logical, but now you know my deep dark superficiality-tinged secret! 😆

    I did not know that there was a graphic novel about Glenn Gould. He was famous canadian pianist. I'm not a big classical music fan, but I love both of his versions of Bach's Goldberg Variations (the earlier recordings were all bout his fast virtuoso, and his later recording was an experiment in slowing down the tempo). I have never tried any Adrian Tomine, what would you recommend as a starting point? You got me intrigued about the Re[a]d Diary. I will look it up. Do you know there many, many dozens of books (at least in french) about Tintin that are in a similar vein as your volume of The Adventures of Tintin at Sea? They cover just bout many aspects as you can think of about Tintin. Cars in Tintin, Travels in Tintin, History in Tintin, etc. There was even a book just about all the colourful insults of Captain Haddock!

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rangersly the Gould biography is terrific! I don’t know anything about classical music at all, but it was a captivating and beautiful comic irrespective. And of course, the Goldberg variations play an important role in the narrative, the two you talk about serving as bookends of sorts.
      The first Adrian Tomine I read was Shortcomings, which falls squarely in the middle of all his works so far. If you appreciate that, you can move forward to Killing and Dying and Scenes from an Impending Marriage (the latter being a lighter and funnier work than most others) or backward to his Summer Blonde and other ‘Optic Nerve’ collections.
      I’m so jealous of French readers! There are so many editions like the Casterman facsimiles that are only available in French and how I hear about these companion books! Either they need to start translating or I need to start learning French.

      @ftloc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really enjoyed it. I didn't love It the way I loved Bone, but there are very few things that compare to Bone, in my opinion. I liked that the art style was so recognizably Jeff Smith but also dark and noir enough for the story, and I liked the sci-fi stuff done in the way it was. I just got the colour edition to see if it changes drastically.

There are other Hugo Pratt hardcovers in English from IDW/Eurocomics (like the Man from the Great North that I show in one of my New Acquisitions videos) and apparently some other language editions of Corto Maltese are in hardcover (as I have been informed by friends of the channel in the comments sections here) but not hardcover in English.
