Here's a timelapse video showing the entire process involved with creating my latest oil painting “Endless.” The piece was inspired by a photo Justin Melton Inman posted by to Instagram. This video takes you from start to finish so you can see everything from the blank canvas through to adding my signature on the completed work. I work in an expressionistic style, slapping layers of abstract color onto the canvas with a palette knife and squeegee before going in and pulling out the details.

Awesome ! question are you using a reference photo? Or improvised, made up portrait?
I use photo references
Awesome painting! I also like to work on a textured surface rather than a white canvas, i was just wondering what you just to draw your outline for your portraits before you start with the oil?
I usually paint the sketch on with oil paint.
this is insane. maybe it's just part of the learning process that comes with art or maybe it's natural talent..but how in the hell do you just know where to put lines/colors/shadows/highlights? i love painting and continue practicing. i am in awe with the human body and our natural expressions. i want to be able to paint them but it's challenging and i always need a reference picture.
It just takes a lot of practice to figure out your own approach. I love watching other artists on TH-cam to see how they work too. There's nothing wrong with using a reference photo. I used one for this painting.
@@PaulRichmondStudio thank you!!
Just painted my first portrait and I'm very proud of myself lol. Just watching this for inspiration. FANCHASTIC!
That’s awesome!
i am learing to do protrats tey very difficuit
Keep practicing!
fucking beautiful
Thank you!
This is amazing, I paint myself but this year I’m going to push myself to create some abstract pieces! I will certainly be trying the background technique!! Fantastic x
Thank you so much! Happy painting!
Wow! This process is amazing! And very interesting lol, im not lying! Bc I’ve always started with sketch bc im not really an abstract artist lol, this turned out amazing! And you are an amazing painter!
Thank you!
Its so amaizing, but show it more slowly, please🙏🙏🙏
I dont understand this and I want to so bad. For some reason I can never wrap my head around the colors. Why are they in certain places and how do you make it come together. I want to paint expressively so bad
I don't think anyone can really teach you how to paint expressively because it's something that comes from inside of you. Your expressive paintings will look very different from mine, because they are a reflection of who you are and how you see the world. The best way to figure it out is just get some paint and start! And don't worry about making something perfect that other people will like. We all make ugly stuff sometimes when we are trying something new. Just have fun and see what happens!
@@PaulRichmondStudio thank you! I'm definitely going to start. I got myself a color wheel and a grayscale and value finder so hopefully thatll help me
Technically, I think I understand what your question is getting at. To capture a good likeness of your subject, think in terms of "value", or lights and darks, or tones and tints of each color. It matters less which color you use and more that it is the correct (or relatively close) shade of the color. The value of each color represents highlights (lighter colors) and shadow (darker colors). . Beyond that, the best artists understand this and also have a firm understanding of color and its many uses as a tool in enhancing a painting to deliver a desired emotional effect. Learn value, and develop a basic understanding of color theory and you're well on your way.
@@Parmoss1640 that makes sense thanks! I bought a color wheel and a value finder so I'm hoping thatll help. I think I just need to try it out and see what happens.
@@crypticrhea2410 Great start! I usually start by identifying the darkest value and the lightest value I will be drawing, or painting and then I give my best estimate of all of the other values in between. Drawing skill is definitely a plus, however these things come with practice and patience. Best wishes! Please stop by my channel. I'll be posting more art-related content.
Eu adoro pinturas desse deito!
Acho muito bonito e moderno
amaaaazing..........................................!!!!!!
Thanks!
Excelente resultado... Bello trabajo... Felicidades y Gracias por poder verlo.
Tuyệt vời
Looks fantastic. I'm just coming from Acrylics to oils and learning daily. Was your background acrylic? It seemed to be too raw to be oil ;staying with the fat over lean rule? Thanks. ;o) SS
Thanks! Yes I use acrylic for the base and then oil for everything else.
I love it so much, thanks alot for showing the process and answering the questions
My pleasure! Thank you for watching!
Everything on the video was so perfect except the music. My opinion though. You could use some serious piano, cinema music.
What is this style called?
Wow impressive ❤️👍amazing
There was probably no need to waste so much paint for the background that just was just burrief underneathe.
It wasn’t wasted. It’s part of my process to respond to the marks and textures that are created by the base layer.
Nice I liked it so much
Thanks!
I enjoyed watching it
It's a beautiful and amazing picture,
Thank you!
anybody notice how much his head is rocking back and forth? like he is possessed?
😈
Music is so fast track n loud. Its so difficult to watch video on such speed n strong sound.
You can turn the volume down/off if you don’t like the music
Such a great video, such terrible music. Wtf
Press mute and listen to whatever you want
OMG!! The close up shook me..any advice for someone who can’t draw a human that realistically..lol 😂 love this painting it’s gorgeous 🥰
Thank you so much! My advice is just keep practicing. The more you draw, the better you'll get!
non si capisce nulla. che tutorial è??? non si vede nulla troppo veloce....
I didn’t say this was a tutorial. I’m just sharing some of my process. My goal is not to teach everyone to paint the same way I do.
siiiick!!
wow very creative... loved it.. suport here.
Thank you!
Wooaaaah this is so cool. I've never really seen someone use color in this way before.
Thank you

Thank you! Here’s info about how to commission a painting from me: paulrichmondstudio.com/pages/commissions
@@PaulRichmondStudio Thanks.
Did you let the background dry before you outlined the head?
Yes - background is in acrylic, rest in oil.
@@PaulRichmondStudio what is the reason for switching from acrylic to oil? is there a particular benefit ?
This is so beautiful. Really inspiring. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Which school this work belongs to?
I’m sorry, I don’t understand your question.
Bel lavoro, complimenti
Excelente tu gran arte. Mi admiración y saludos desde Rep. Argentina!!!

You are amazing.
Thanks!
Wow, good job 👏🏼😁❤️
Thanks!
How often did you have to stop to let things dry? I have tried to paint like this before and everything ends up a bit too blended. Perhaps it is my quality of paints?
Love it, how long did this take?
Thanks - I think 3 days.
Paul Richmond how many hours would that have been?
Very nice. It s a lot of work ! Thank you to share.
