Fun as all get out isnt it? That is called convective soaring, nothing to do with the mild slope of the beach but where the cooler water meets with the warm sand and causes an upward bubble of air. Also a good prevailing wind helps true airspeed and allows for almost near zero ground speed flight. Watch Pelicans and Seagulls fly effortlessly along sandy shorelines on warm days, they are the best flight instructors on the planet. I love flying my sailplanes on the beach. Everyone gets such a kick out of it. But only if the wind is blowing onshore. From the other way its nothing but turbulence from the high rise condo eyesores. You've just discovered heaven on earth kid, congrats and great flying.
The fastest rc planes use true slope soaring techniques to achieve transonic speeds, it's funny how gliders are faster than jet turbines in the rc world
@Potato Jake you must be referring to dynamic soaring. I believe the record is almost 400 miles per hr. I'd like to witness that first hand. Bet the "sound" was awesome. And those sailplanes are nothing you'll find via Tower or Horizon Hobbies. 😅
@@cardinaldriver I believe the record is somewhere upwards of 530mph. Ixm sure the sound of the planes ripping through the air is incredible. I've been up close to wind turbine generators and they make a nive wooosh
@@potatojake197 that’s called dynamic soaring and they do it on the Lee side by using extreme wind to push the glider down wind then pull down into the protected area below the ridge of stagnant air to travel back upwind without a headwind then pull back up into the strong wind and slingshot themselves downwind again and again, the record is somewhere around 548 mph unless it’s been broken again.
If there was no slope, the water would just take it over. These dlg gliders are so light and efficient that they can use a very small angle drift up to keep soaring like that, like we see in the video. The air goes so fast over the sand that there is no way it would immediately get warm and climb like a thermal bubble.
Because the drag the air has over water is quite different from the drag over land so at soon as the wind hits land it's always gonna start having some upwards flow just because of the extra turbulence created right at the point where the water changes in to sand. The other reason is that the wind also starts hitting the waves that are only right at the shore.
Long ago in Manhattan Beach I had a Hobie Hawk. There’s a walkway we call the Strand that parallels the beach. The Beach varies from a couple hundred feet to about 3/4 mile from the Strand. The winds prevail off the beach fairly consistent. So I could walk the Strand and fly my glider along the way until I found a good steady spot. The Hobie Hawk is a very high performance wing in that location. Hard to reproduce that wing but very well worth the expense. This Kid is great, going to get greater as time goes on, he’s a Modeler….
Fascinating Design Challenge: No need for the strength of DLG, just a hand-nudge into the lift. Its seems to need Penetration so a thin, yet high lift foil. I'd try a build for extreme lightweight and thin wings...almost flimsy.... just for those conditions. Fun Flight !
Thats So Cool Slope Soaring Without the Slope ha ha ha - Thats Amazing skills you have son keeping it flying like that Way to Go :-)) - Got My Like and Subbed :-)
Well he looks like he’s having fun, which is more than can be said with a lot of youngsters sat indoors on bloody play stations! Out in the open air , with dad, what could be better?
Yes - it's great to see. Like young Harry, my kids are outdoors playing sport, making and flying model planes and being physical. Computer games are a big zero (actually a big minus) for kids in our humble opinion... :-)
I'm so sorry for not replying. This glider is no longer in production but it is a 1m discuss launch glider. Soaring models usa should supply something similar
I love to see kids getting into the hobby, rather than sitting in a house playing video games. Compliments to dad.

Awesome!!!!…. Kids get out there and enjoy !

You wouldn't think you'd get any lift of that little slope but it certainly is working!
And it's so fun.

What amazing joy and delight. Keep it up! ♥️
gentlest slope ever alert! very cool
i live close to lake erie, ready for edgewater beach ! thanks for the excellent video !
Nice job boys. Harry’s flying skills are well and truly evident in these windy conditions. Slick filming by the old man too!
Wow! Nice work and barely even a slope! Looks like a really fun afternoon. Take care!
Nick
Great flying from the young pilot, he’s making it look easy in what looks like a fairly strong breeze !
Yep . It was a good 15knots. 👍
@MrKeepingitrealau What's the DLG model?
Just came across this video, nice flying mate, you make it look easy...
Thanks. It does seem easy when the lift is soooo goood.
Oh, gosh ...... that looks a hoot !!
Well done ! Wish i was there
Bravo
Quel est ce planeur ? F3k ?
Thanks I learned you can slope on a shallow beach slope like this Laurie
Well done boys. Great skills there Harry

Great flight!!
I’ve crashed a few. Looks really close to the water at one points. Great video. You’ve inspired an old man to get back in the hobby!
Which model dlg is it? I wouldn't mind making one of these if I can get the plans online to print out. I thinking of making a lazy bee glider too.
Thats So Cool Slope Soaring Without the Slope ha ha ha - Thats Amazing skills you have son keeping it flying like that Way to Go :-)) - Got My Like and Subbed :-)
Thank you.

totally agree!

Well done little man
You are brave, there is no way I could throw my expensive toy at the sharks.
Great glider, great pilot!
Please advice specific model of this glider, or link were I can buy this particular one. Thank you!
I'm so sorry for not replying. This glider is no longer in production but it is a 1m discuss launch glider. Soaring models usa should supply something similar
Awesome video
There's hardly any slope there to generate lift! Wow!
Well done mate nice soaring 🤣🤣🤣
Where in the UK can I buy that wonderful glider?
I'm so sorry. It's not produced anymore.
Nice job buddy not much of a slope but you're doing great
Thanks 👍
Super cool , but there's barely a slope . I thought the slope needed to be much more steep .
It doesn't take much of a ridge when you are as slippery as these things. Ain't no Sinbad.
Nice flights .
Will there be a build video. Thanks. ✌
This one was an arf from hobbyking. Sadly Not produced anymore. So no build video for this one.
Best fun under you can have with 6 volts or less
😁👍
Bravo👍
This must be Florida slope soaring 😂
Where's the slope?
2024 Bump. He must be alll grown up now !!! ( duh !!!!)
Best RC for Kids is Gliders.
what DLG is that sir?
Cool. What model is it? I think you mentioned dlg?
Hobbyking dlg. Unfortunately it's not made anymore.
What is the wing loading?
I'm not sure but very low.
Hobbyking DLG - is it any good?
It has served me well for 2 years so far and I have abused it. Sadly it's not produced anymore. It performs very well in North East Queensland.
10yrs later he gets a sailplane license or paraglider.
Well done kid. Of course you used selective editing but that is ok.
Cringy but good i guess no just joking
