    We have had a pair (male stays year round, female comes back in early spring) of roadrunners on and around our property, for about 5 or 6 years now. The male "Rudy" lost a foot a couple of years ago so I began feeding him. He's very friendly and comes within a foot or so, but I would never think of touching him. The female "Rhonda" is still very skittish, but on cold or cloudy mornings (before lizards are out) she will announce herself with "brrt brrt brrt" so I'll put out raw hamburger bits and live mealworms. This is the first year I've seen both taking worms or hamburger in their beaks and head off to the cactus (where I assume their nest is). We're hoping to see babies!

    • @sylvia106

      Frozen( thawed) or recently live mice from pet store, not hamburger. According to roadrunner lecture here on TH-cam..

    It’s really cool that you can get this close to the nest and the mom doesn’t abandon the nest to protect herself. some birds do that...If the mom comes back to feed the babies and sees a human wondering by the nest or feels it’s not safe for her.... these animals defense is to just be still and wait for the threat to pass...and it’s amazing that the babies can pick up on the moms fear or caution and also do not move a muscle. Even in the middle of a meal and they hear movement they all just stop what they are doing...too cool

    • @amberdusk
      @amberdusk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's the first thing I noticed about roadrunners feeding their babies - regardless of any outside influence. They put their beaks with the food into the baby's mouths - and both hold perfectly still for several moments before the baby actually takes the food in. Entirely different from any other bird species out there!

    One more comment as my gratefulness & further encouragement (request?).
    Some viewer might say "edit a little here & there .." to truncate the whole length/duration. Personally, 1 hour of fascinating moment wouldn't need such a trouble. Occasionally scenes offer an inactive bird for a while. That's the point. They need rest. Those scenes could be seen in BBC or other documentaries. Here's a naturallife of roadrunner captured as truly as possible. I do appreciate that.
