I haven't seen this since it was live! I remember Elly Van Hulst beating Mary in Zurich at 3,000m on August 17, 1988, in a time of 8:33.97 to 8:34.69. Here I wished Ruth Wysocki and Kim Gallagher would have kept Regina Jacobs off the Olympic team.

Jacobs always came across as a spectacularly unpleasant person.

@@mstrunn Yeah, probably the only nastier person in the sport was Mary Decker and possibly Carl Lewis.

Jim Ryan did get a Silver. Decker never got a medal at all

That NZ singlet must have been when she was close with Dick Quax.

Mary's muscles have been toned? No mention of the compartment syndrome she suffered from?

I think her compartment syndrome was indirectly mentioned under the category of “shin surgery.”

I wish she had just gone out and done this same thing at the olympics. She would have been fine if she had run 3:58 there running in the wake of the romanian.

I don't know if that would have helped - I've read that Mary was suffering from the flu right when she arrived in Seoul and wasn't 100 percent for either event. And Paula Ivan's times and performances at the Olympics (and her subsequent retirement the year after) did raise eyebrows and suspicions. I wish she had run/won the 1500-meter run in Los Angeles; that would have given her the gold for sure.

@@kay-emsvensk7858 Remember the 88 Games were called the Steroid Games and you do have to have suspicions about some of those Eastern European times. As mentioned Mary ran a lot of prelim races in 88 could have been tired if she indeed was suffering from the flu, great athlete just love her.
