Thank you! I have a leaky valve and I didn’t know they had to be open to replace it. Makes 100% sense. Very thorough video👍🏼. I was instructed when putting the escutcheons on to put a small bead of caulk on the escutcheon and let it sit for a minute or two and then slide it on. Any excess should be wiped off but I can see how over time the putty might be better and easier to work with
Thanks for your video. My bathtub faucet has three handles and was made by Eljer. Several years ago I had to have a plumber come out in the past due to the handle on the hot water side not cutting the water off. I watched the plumber take it apart and replace the seat washer on the end of the stem and it fixed the leak. Everything was good until this past weekend when turning the hot water off the handle suddenly turned the water back on after almost having it off. I decided to try my hand at it this time and got the necessary supplies and replaced the washer myself. When turning the handle the water does cut off, but the handle still comes loose again and water flows and a little more twisting I was able to get the water back off. Is this a sign that the stem has gone bad as well?
Great video, thank you. Please allow me one question. I have a 3 handle very old (1973) tub faucet. It seems it's made by Jameco. I want to replace/upgrade the three stems, especially the diverter which no longer works. So in your opinion which plumbing fixtures company stems i should use for this replacement. Sam Rafeedie You are very welcome Sam. Glad it helped. Great question & we are glad you asked. A valve system that old will require a little bit of searching...which is normal & doable. Lowes or Home Depot will most likely not have the Stems in store however if you are able to remove a stem, you can take it to your local Lowes or Home Depot and they have a huge catalog in the plumbing department to allow you to match your part. The problem with that is... if they have to order it, it may be a few days until you get it... which will force you to reinstall old diverter stem until the new one comes which shouldn’t be a big issue. If Lowes or Home Depot do not have access to the new Stems, The next best thing to do is search local plumbing dealers such as Kohler dealers, Moen dealers, & Jameco dealers. They are a much better option when trying to find parts that old. You mentioned that your 3 handle system is from 1973. You won’t believe us when we say this however the valve system we worked on in this video is literally from 1973... that’s when the place was built and it is the original plumbing. 😀 We were able to get our parts from a local Kohler dealer. We recommend contacting all local plumbing companies that perform all sorts of plumbing installations. Let’s start there, keep us posted Sam! Great video! I am trying to understand if this would help with low pressure it’s only for the hot side but the pressure works fine everywhere else in the house?
If I change out the seat in the pipe would that allow me to install a different stem from what I currently have or would I have to completely change out the entre valve for the tub/shower?

Michael question for you. How satisfied are you with the handles that came with this kit? I was able to get one seat/valve stem replaced today after hours of nothing but difficulty and once I got it together the knob on it feels like it’s a bit loose when you turn the water on like it wiggles a little bit and doesn’t seem stable like the old handles like you had and I had before the repair. It seems fine when the water is off. Have you noticed that or are your handles movement free? Thanks!
I have a very old 2 knob handle system with the diverter in the tub faucet. House was built in 1940. I traced my leaky faucet back to the hot water cartridge, but I can't figure out what brand it is. Any way to put a completely new type of valve and stem in there? At this point I'm thinking it's a better option to swap it all out for something modern than to keep trying to find old stuff and adapters for it. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for watching & it’s definitely an option. If you are looking to install a brand new valve system such as a single shower head installment or something more modern, you may need to consult with a licensed plumber as they may need to remove drywall/tile to gain access to valve & ensure it is replaced in a manner that meets proper code. However if you are more interested in replacing the current stems with replacement stems as opposed to installing a brand new system, it can go fairly quickly and be very friendly price wise. Thanks for the video. Mine is a 3 ways shower valve. The brand is,”standard”. The only time I see the water leaks through the valve stem is when I turn on the water. Do you think I just need to replace the seal or also the seat ? Or the whole valve stem ? And is it the same design like any other brand or different ? Thanks
Thanks for watching, any update? We would recommend replacing the stem and o-ring seal first. If that doesn’t fix leak, replacing seat would be next likely cause.
This is the one i need to change out , mine is hard to turn all of a sudden ... i have to find what size it is nothing is leaking just getting harder to turn lately .. i changed it when i moved in here 10 years ago there was no hot water since the house was empty for a while when it was for sale . I replaced the cold water stem in my shower. But the problem im having now is when you shut the water off, the handle won’t stop spinning. And if you keep spinning it, the entire handle + stem will pull out of the wall. Is this just because I wasn’t using the socket wrenches and was simply using a wrench to tighten it?
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Any update? By chance did you apply Teflon tape to the thread of the stem? Teflon tape will not only create a water-tight seal, it will assist in firmly securing the stem into the threaded housing of the valve... ultimately not allowing it to spin or loosen in any way over the months and years of using your handles. Also, have you ensured that you purchased the exact replacement size part? A stem with an ever-so-slightly smaller thread diameter will cause this exact issue.
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders he’s not saying the body is spinning, rather the handle is. This occurs when the barrel doesn’t seat fully and you can’t shut the water off.
Outside, there are 3 handles in the box. They won't turn easily at all. 40+ year old home. So I just take the t-bar to the city main and turn the water off there. Quick and easy.

I learned stuff from you, thank you so much!! Before I watched this video I had created a hole where the middle knob was bc I stripped the copper pipe there and now I can’t put a new knob on it :(. The plumber said I have to replace the whole copper piping to get it replaced and that it’d cost $2700 😯. I don’t have that much money right now :/ is there something I can use to temporarily plug that hole so I can start taking showers here vs at my friends house 😬 😂 I wish I watched your videos BEFORE I did that!
I know I just when way over my plumbing skill set (which is none 😂), but all I was trying to do was to replace the shower knobs (that have probably been there since 1949 when the house was built lol). But I realize now, I shouldn’t have messed with it and just had a plumber do it..I just didn’t foresee it messing with the internal copper piping like it did 😢 So I just want a temporary solution to be able to shower without water going into that hole in the wall…while I wait patiently for my soon to come piping replacement. Ugh! I wish you were here 😂

Next time if it's just HOT water, just go to the Hot Water heater and turn off the outbound HOT water line. Might be faster but a few seconds. But great video.

After removing a single Stem, you can take that Stem to your local Lowes or Home Depot and they have a large parts magazine in the plumbing section. DIY With Michael Borders does, or do these valve cartridges have to be the same manufacturer as the valve body? Are the interchangeable? At the moment the diverter valve is the most pressing issue. But I'd like to replace all of them with matching trim and handles and all. Is this possible without changing the valve body? Oh...and thank you for replying.

When I turn the shower divert valve water flows great out of the shower but when it’s in the opposite position water barely flows out of the hot or cold lines to the faucet. How could the shower diverter valve cut the flow of water to a trickle to the faucet? None of the valves leak.
Thanks for watching. You raise a great question...& as you hinted toward in your comment...this is not normal. As you pull diverter out to allow water to flow to upper head, something inside may be clogging it. The inner rubber seal may be warped & falling off leading to blockage. How old is diverter? Replacing diverter may help solve issue. Has this been happening for awhile or just recently? Keep us posted. Us fellow DIY’ers need to stick together! 😎👍🔧🔩
Hi Michael, I really appreciate your response! I’ve searched all over the net but couldn’t find anything related to my problem. The water flows perfectly to the shower but when I use either the cold or hot water there’s just a trickle of water flowing to the spout. It’s been this way for several years. We’ve been filling the tub with water from the shower because the pressure is so good. But if we turn the shower valve to the faucet it would take 15 minutes to fill. All the valves are 15-20 years old. I guess the next step is to just replace the shower valve since it’s the only common link. Thanks again for your quick response!!!

This is a very friendly DIY project...it may be incredibly calcified inside. You can match your exact Stem to the Stem inside the magazine and you will be able to pinpoint what manufacturer or brand your Valve and all parts are. Keep us posted!

Are the interchangeable?
At the moment the diverter valve is the most pressing issue.
But I'd like to replace all of them with matching trim and handles and all.
Is this possible without changing the valve body?

Thanks for the question. Home Depot, Lowes, or ACE hardware can match your original parts with new aftermarket parts...definitely possible.

I got two plastic pieces broken when I take out the brass valve. Do I got to replace any piping?

How do you know what kind of stem to get? So many shower valves aren't marked for manufacturer, much less model.

When I turn the shower divert valve water flows great out of the shower but when it’s in the opposite position water barely flows out of the hot or cold lines to the faucet. How could the shower diverter valve cut the flow of water to a trickle to the faucet? None of the valves leak.
Thanks for watching. You raise a great question...& as you hinted toward in your comment...this is not normal.
As you pull diverter out to allow water to flow to upper head, something inside may be clogging it. The inner rubber seal may be warped & falling off leading to blockage.
How old is diverter? Replacing diverter may help solve issue. Has this been happening for awhile or just recently? Keep us posted. Us fellow DIY’ers need to stick together!

Hi Michael, I really appreciate your response! I’ve searched all over the net but couldn’t find anything related to my problem. The water flows perfectly to the shower but when I use either the cold or hot water there’s just a trickle of water flowing to the spout. It’s been this way for several years. We’ve been filling the tub with water from the shower because the pressure is so good. But if we turn the shower valve to the faucet it would take 15 minutes to fill. All the valves are 15-20 years old. I guess the next step is to just replace the shower valve since it’s the only common link. Thanks again for your quick response!!!

We appreciate your reply. Something is interfering the flow of water. You may need to install a new tub faucet. This is a very friendly DIY project...it may be incredibly calcified inside. Below is a link to a video that shows us removing faucet & cleaning it...however if your water flow is that low, we recommend a new faucet.

Why is it necessary to turn off all water to house, but not just the valves to the shower?

Did I miss something..you turn off the valve but the valve was all ready closed when you installed it...

I was watching this because I have twins.. son and a daughter. Son is experiencing agro testosterone overload and doesn’t know his own strength. Daughter is experiencing her pre wife sensibilities by having me repair broken shower handles... while remodeling a shower/bath. FML.
