Brenda K. Starr steps Behind The Rope. Yup, THAT Brenda K. Starr. Brenda chats with us about what it was like to find success and hit it big in the late 1980’s with her most well known song “I Still Believe”. We chat about some of her contemporaries at the time, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper, Paula Abdul, Tina Turner and Debbie Gibson. Speaking of contemporaries, a little known singer named Mariah Carey used to sing background for Brenda. One day Brenda handed a demo to Columbia Records Executive Tommy Mottola at a party on behalf of Mariah and, as they say in the biz, the rest is history. Brenda opens up about what Tommy was really like both as a person and as a Record Exec who helped launch her career. Brenda also discusses how she really feels about Mariah covering "I Still Believe”, which has now become one of her biggest hits, breaks down where Mariah’s “diva” and “difficult” reputation originates from, and discusses how true she feels those monikers are. She spares no detail in explaining exactly why her and Mariah no longer speak and what she would say if she crossed paths with her today. Why does it not shock us that the name Wendy Williams comes up in this conversation. There was also Mariah’s wedding and being seated at a table with both Gloria Estefan and Barbara Streisand. I was really frustrated at Brenda when she started talking negatively about Mariah. Her wendy interview and some ig comments, it just frustrates me because Mariah has always been nice to her even at her concerts, she always say nice things about brenda before singing 'I still believe'. I'm glad that Mariah's memoir helped her maybe water down the bad energy she has with Mariah. I hope they hang out again and catch up.

We all have those friends that we have neglected or neglected us. I think Mariah just got too busy for Brenda which is understandable. Friends don’t stay in ur life forever they come in and out sometimes.

Tommy was the reason why Mariah had loads of number ones. That's how powerful he was.
Only from a business aspect he was powerful. He ran a powerful label and knew how to craft a career.. but..Remember..Mariah had number ones after him...she lacked the backing support of a solid label and team after him...but the talent and music stayed there..and she grew with the times. I'm glad she didn't stay in the "90's ballad singer" vibe.

This is the first time I have seen her so watered down and real-she used to seem so frustrated. It's great to know that Mariah's book has comforted her in a way. It's great to see that the death of the friendship was due to Tommy and Wendy, not Mariah. Mariah still respects her. Tommy Motola is the DEVIL.
I always thought there was a lot of misunderstanding between her and Mariah, which the book has cleared up. Brenda's comment on Mariah's MIAM release post on Instagram in 2013 was just so hateful, just like the Wendy interview she talked of here. Mariah just lost touch with her due to "professional issues" (how could she a good relationship with her abusive husband's enemy), and after I Still Believe, soon Glitter happened and it was a messy time for Mariah. After that I think that Mariah must have felt a little guilty of contacting a long lost friend. I really hope they can meet again, lambs should tag Mariah and let them meet.

@Anne Day No, actually Mariah has around 30 interviews from 2000-present when she mentioned Brenda in a good way, she always tells "Brenda K starr, to whom I sang backup gave the demo to Tommy" whenever she was asked how did she come to know Tommy. She always acknowledges her roots. The problem here was that Mariah was earlier restricted (By Motola) and later too involved to connect with Brenda. Between friends, you must know that even if you don't talk for a year it's very difficult to call in the 2nd year...because of guilt of ignoring a good friend. I believe that was what happened. Mariah never developed harsh feelings for her, even after the infamous Wendy interview which Brenda did which not even an enemy would have done.
@Anne Day Oh please. That's just human nature to defend people you care about. Mariah may have been a bad friend but she never spoke negatively about Brenda the way Brenda has in the past. Having said that I would love for them to become friends again. More so than Mariah reconciling with Walter A.

Brenda needs to remember she has said plenty of negative and shady things about Mariah. Anyone remember back in 2014 when the release of MIAMTEC, and Brenda commented on the photos saying "So Fake" and "Just keeping it real." If the two of them are fine now, then great. I don't know why she started speaking ill of Mariah. Mariah always spoke nice about her, she recorded I still believe to honor her and she has always said that Brenda put her foot through the door for her to start her music career. This was not Mariah's fault, Tommy is an evil person, and he did the same thing to Mariah with Jlo he wanted to blackball Mariah, however Mariah was lucky and talented enough to pull through and triumph and I'm glad Tommy lost the power he had because he is not the right person to wield it

I don't understand this deal between Mariah and Brenda, but what do I know? I'm just Radio Engineer, Small Market Radio Station Owner/Operator & worked in TV for a short time for ABC-TV in the 80s. My opinion, for what it's worth, Brenda K. is 55 years old, soon to be 56 in October as of this posting. The time clock of Brenda's life is ticking away. It's time for everyone to move on. Erick "Mancow Muller" had it all in Chicago. In March 2018, when "97.9, The Loop" died in Chicago, he lost his morning show, but he didn't stop. Mancow Muller said he's moved on. He is part owner of a Elite Restaurant in Chicago. In a video he did, Mancow Muller said don't stop pursuing your dreams! Keep on making things better for the future! We all need to remember this.😊

I agree...it was a poor choice of words and up until that point, she was doing good. She did'nt "create" Mariah and that comment had shades of narcissism. But I do believe she was a great friend to Mariah. If you watch Mariah's performance of love takes time on Showtime at the apollo, there is a clip when Mariah hits the high note, you can see Brenda in the audience clapping and singing along....you can't fake those moments...her happiness for Mariah was obvious. Unfortunately life happens and things change.

Me and Leslie just had our 15th wedding anniversary May 16th. I turned 57 in May. I'm semi retired, looking to 60 years old, but still have my hands in Album Oriented Rock/Mainstream Rock Radio Online. I worked in Urban/R&B Radio in the past. We owned a failing, small town, AM radio station.📻 Me and Leslie turned off the AM Signal in August of 2019. We would have made it through the Covid Pandemic. We stayed Online Streaming in our studio. Anyhow, my wife has pushed me to move on and do what I love, and not worry about the people who were so jealous of me and what I achieved for the 28 years of a radio station owner & operator! We would be happy to play Brenda's New Song!🎵 It fits perfectly into Mainstream Rock/Pop we play. I am glad Mariah and Brenda are still on good terms. Mariah's covering her song seemed okay to me because it was like 12 years after Brenda recorded it. By then, all the sales of that ersion of the song were played out. If anything it brought back interest in Brenda's career and Brenda's version of that song. Brenda seems okay with it too.

It's a sense of pride, and I personally think it's genuine. Brenda helped Mariah get her break-and she is proud of the fact that "the greatest talent in music history" was first noticed and nurtured by her-just like a brother would be proud seeing his younger brother achieve monumental success. That's prideful affectionate boasting and genuine.

Honestly Brenda created the open door to Tommy and Columbia. No doubt about that .On hindsight one can say Mi Mi would have done it anyway but as usual it would have been a long road because Whitney had that space covered at that time..So,,yes..Brenda did it ..plain and simple..She got her friend in the door..with her own contacts and the rest is Legendary.
Mariah already had another record deal offer she turned down for Tommy plus her demo tape that included Vision of Love
I felt like she's bitter as her career ended as Mariah's career keeps soaring. And she feels entitled for her role in introducing Mariah to Tommy. Probably she wants a portion of that money!!!

All friends have scrabbles every now and then. I think that everyone needs to leave both of them alone as you can attach any meaning that anybody wants to attach. It is just like Debbie Gibson and Tiffany when media always tried to pit them against each other. I didn't care too much about Tommy at all. Yes, Brenda helped Mariah out by introducing her to Tommy which could happened without Brenda's help cause someone would eventually signed a deal with Mariah as it could been longer for Mariah to actually came out, so the boost that Brenda gave her was good but people should stay out of this argument or whatever it is between them. They both are talented singers although I like listening to Mariah more than Brenda but both of them are talented as well as creative. All singers are talented singers. Only female singers that I ever liked was Debbie Gibson which I totally can't wait for her new album to come out this year in August. I adored Debbie at one time, then I fell in love with Mariah's voice although I still love both of them. I like Shania Twain, Belinda Carlisle, Taylor Dayne, Amy Grant, etc. So I like variety of songwriters and singers as I got love for numerous artists across different genres in pop, country, R&B, and even some classical numbers. I also like some old time singers like That's Life by Frank Sinatra as I love singing the song. But to me, this drama is between Tommy, Mariah, and Brenda and what I think doesn't matter as it is only an opinion but us fans as well as media likes drama within these artists lives that we pin them up against each other all the time.

No one thinks Brenda is a rival of Mariah. You can’t compete when you don’t compare.
I wonder was it the lambs that made Brenda say Mariah, this is word for word, came up to her and said, “You know I’m White,” which is the most unnatural thing anyone would say? She went out of her way to try and make Mariah seem like she was either ashamed or hated being Black. No fans made her take it there! There’s plenty of 90’s interviews with Mariah telling you exactly what she was.
If Mariah saw her she’d pay her dust. Of course publicly she would keep it cute but you don’t come back from accusing a biracial person of racial passing like she doesn’t like being Black. It was Brenda’s attempt to turn her Black fans against her quite frankly, the definition of a hater.
How many times is she going to tell everyone she bought her a bathing suit? Yippee. And yeah Mariah’s rich now but did she have to tell she had holes in her shoes? She’s the type of girl that makes other women scared of making friends with women, you just never know if on “mad day” they’re going to do this. Also, was Mariah chronically ill or did she just give 3 examples of her giving her some soup-once. First it was her mother taking care of Mariah when she’s sick then it’s her giving her soup. 🙄 Mariah outgrew her “friendship” with this woman. It happens. I’ve moved on from friends I’ve had in the past and I’ve had friends move on from me. That’s life. Brenda just needs to get over it. She sounds super petty and delusional if she thinks anyone like Mariah could ever trust someone who’s been so very spiteful.

After listening to everything that Brenda K. Starr has shared (all videos of this interview). . .her relationship with Mariah Carey was and still is VERY lopsided! Brenda is the "giver." Mariah Carey is the "taker." Brenda got severely shortchanged. Mariah is not a true friend. Not then. Not now. One can excuse her actions while young and married to Tommy Mottola. Mariah would have had to be a different kind of individual (forthright, strong, about doing the "right" thing, like Brenda) to have stood up for her friend (Brenda) and their friendship. Clearly, Mariah's character is cut from a different cloth than Brenda's.
Kudos to Brenda K. Starr for staying true, being so very strong in the face of adversity, and overcoming the blackballing that targeted her. No thanks to Mariah Carey. Mariah still owes Brenda K. Starr, but she has chosen to ignore a real responsibility to give back to the woman who facilitated Mariah's introduction out of poverty and into fame and fortune. Acknowledgment (of Brenda) in an autobiography (lip service), or during a stage performance, is not good enough! It's crumbs. It's nothing more than a simple acknowledgment. It's not a committment to a groundbreaking and longterm friendship.
If Mariah felt any sense of gratitude and real love for Brenda, Mariah would have initiated repairing their relationship especially after divorcing Mottola.
When people do not hold you in high regard, as you hold them, you need to sever that tie. Brenda K. Starr shouldn't spend anymore of her valued talent and valuable time discussing Mariah Carey. Especially in terms of an enduring loyalty and love for their friendship. That ship sailed a long time ago. To quote Maya Angelou, "When people show you who they are, believe them the first time."

I was looking for songs of Brenda because of the doc. I saw of Mariah .. And I was wondering why I didnt find more songs that i expected too besides Spanish songs, good for her to keep going when tommy tried to black ball her!. Now I know why because of this interview. She was so good at what she did and she was for women and supporting other artist obviously since she saw the talent Mariah had.. And some of these comments nobody denied that Mariah wouldnt have made it on her own. But Brenda is a real role model for how she took Mariah under her wing and literally gave her demo to Tommy so she does deserve props SHE Never once said Mariah wouldnt have been famous with out her help. Being the Big Corporations have taken over the FM Band, I moved to a Small Town to "play radio" on my time. I'm also a Engineer. Brenda didn't do no harm anybody. My Dad was in the Country Music Business out of Nashville for years, so I know how all this goes. I went to college to be a Radio Transmitter Engineer and became a Small Market Radio Station Owner with my wife. Brenda is welcomed on our station anytime. I see all the hard work she's had to do just stay afloat! Working odd jobs to make ends meet is so hard, but Brenda and her Husband did it!
