Brenda K. Starr steps Behind The Rope. Yup, THAT Brenda K. Starr. Brenda chats with us about what it was like to find success and hit it big in the late 1980’s with her most well known song “I Still Believe”. We chat about some of her contemporaries at the time, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper, Paula Abdul, Tina Turner and Debbie Gibson. Speaking of contemporaries, a little known singer named Mariah Carey used to sing background for Brenda. One day Brenda handed a demo to Columbia Records Executive Tommy Mottola at a party on behalf of Mariah and, as they say in the biz, the rest is history. Brenda opens up about what Tommy was really like both as a person and as a Record Exec who helped launch her career. Brenda also discusses how she really feels about Mariah covering "I Still Believe”, which has now become one of her biggest hits, breaks down where Mariah’s “diva” and “difficult” reputation originates from, and discusses how true she feels those monikers are. She spares no detail in explaining exactly why her and Mariah no longer speak and what she would say if she crossed paths with her today. Why does it not shock us that the name Wendy Williams comes up in this conversation. There was also Mariah’s wedding and being seated at a table with both Gloria Estefan and Barbara Streisand. Of course, we delve deep into Mariah’s “The Meaning of Mariah” book which hit shelves last year - Brenda shares her thoughts, discusses what is accurate and what she would like to rebut, Mariah’s short lived reality docu series “Mariah’s World” - Stella, Bryan, Nick Cannon, and the many misconceptions in the media about Brenda’s relationship past and present with Mariah Carey, or Rich as Brenda calls her. In other news Brenda’s daughter made it to the Top Ten on American Idol and we needed all the back stage secrets and thoughts on Ryan Seacrest and JLO. Finally, Brenda chats about new projects, new music, her newfound success on TikTok, her love for and thoughts on Demi Lovato and her recent tell all documentary and all she has going on in life now.

I have known Brenda since the devils nest in the bronx , she is mad cool. I meet Mariah through her , we were not friends . I would see her when Brenda performed . Brenda told me she was an amazing singer . I heard her demo n still have it , it blew me away . my favorite song was n is vanishing . love you you Brenda . fun story she sang at Brenda baby shower . she was great . we chatted a bit ,she told everyone her record was coming out in two weeks . n it sure did .

I have always believed that Mariah should just give Brenda a token of appreciation for putting her in contact with the people who made he one of the biggest stars of all time. Just give me $1M or help her kid get a contract or something. That's the least you can do for a person who made no money and is responsible for your major success.

Mariah did love Tommy, more then she loved herself for staying that long. There are old printed interviews of her admitting she cared and loved him very much.
I think Mariah definitely loved Tommy - she was still writing songs about their marriage well into the late 2000s. Wasn’t he the first man she went to bed with? I think it was Tommy that abused the power and control he did have over Mariah as the head of her label, and in turn her love and trust.

Tommy was the new President of Sony music when he discovered Mariah. But it was Mariah that solidified that position for Tommy. Mariah gave Tommy as much power as Tommy gave Mariah. They were both very assertive and controlling people in their own right, not used to being a puppet but rather the masters of their own destiny. Reńe was the puppeteer in the whole relationship between him and Celine. Thats why their relationship worked. Celine was content to being told what to do/what to look like/ stay in her lane… while Reńe does all the work behind the scenes. Mariah’s career and artistry is much more in akin to that of Madonna than her vocal peers. In a sense that when these two (Mariah and Madonna) puts out music or does anything career wise, you know it was them whos in charge and in control, with no man pulling the strings.

According to Mariah, she did help out her friends and family financially but some of them end up relying on her. Sure she is worth half a billion dollars but it doesn’t matter, people should not rely on someone else for money. That is just what it sounds like is going on.

Yes, it was 12 years later, it was not like Mariah was stealing Brenda's song or Brenda's thunder. Brenda's version had a 12 year head start. Brenda's version was a huge radio play hit and it made #12 on the Billboards US. Recorded in 1987 , while Mariah's was in 1999.

The ways she talks, she leads people to assume Mariah should have given her something she didn't. The way she speaks is if she is owed something. No matter what accolades of comments she says about Mariah, you can tell she feels slighted in some way.
