Old U2, back when they were really young, was so serious, solemn, grave and earnest. They seemed wise in their innocence. They were kids, almost like me. And their music felt... somehow like winter, or autumn: cold, but beautiful, raw, thoughtful and spiritual. They seemed to have such an untypical perception of the world for being young people, which some could find rather depressing or sinister, but I relate to young U2's sound so very much. I relate to feeling old as an adolescent, and everything else expressed through their songs. Their sound was so special, dreamy, magnificient, transcendent, reverent, out of this world. Not just "sad" at all. It makes me believe in the wonders of this world again, makes me remember the unpretentious and pure happiness of a child and the pain of realizing that some things are just gone forever. Now, as they have become actual "old" men, it seems like they've ironically moved on to summer: their music is upbeat, pop, too happy, too polished. I relate way less. But I'll never forget what their music has done for me, and love them so much for this that no others bands could ever come even close. I am eightteen, between the two worlds of childhood and adulthood, melancholy is my main state of mind, and young U2 just seems to get me.

I saw U2 in Fall 1980 at free concert at San Jose State University student union with my dorm roommate. We knew "I Will Follow" from radio play. I will forever remember the electricity in the hall when they started playing An Cat Dubh. We knew we were present for something truly special. The concrete floor of the hall flexed to the beat of the crowd in synch with the band. Roadies sprawled across the amplifiers to keep the stacks from falling over. Absolutely the best concert I've ever seen - period. Amazing memories...amazing band - U2

Wished they still sounded like this. As a musician, I understand the need to grow and experiment musically. All my favourite bands did it. But I admit that I lost track of U2 after Zooropa, which I thought was shite. When I heard Achtung Baby, I could tell they were losing their Irish rock sound, becoming more Americanized, but the album did grow on me. Saw them on that tour and they pulled off all the classics with that signature sound. Sometimes it takes more than one listen, I suppose...

Haven't listened to much of this for quite awhile, and I admit that although I love the band, I've never been a HARDCORE devotee. I don't know what R&H was intended to be, but when they went from With Or Without You, Still Haven't Found, Streets Have No Name to Desire, Angel of Harlem, Love Came To Town etc, it was obvious something was changing. At least, with Unforgettable Fire and the others you mentioned, they still sounded like the band we all know and love. Guess ur a bigger fan than I.

Wasn't 'Rattle & Hum' ('88) meant to be an homage to Americana? What about the bluesy country feel of 'The Joshua Tree' ('87)? What about the title 'Wide Awake In America' ('85)? Two references to MLK in 'The Unforgettable Fire' ('84)? 'Under A Blood Red Sky' ('83), live at Red Rocks? If you ask me, the evolution started much earlier.
I think 'Achtung Baby' & 'Zooropa' were a conscious attempt to get back to their geographic roots. They lost a lot of their appeal in the U.S. after Zooropa...

That change happened for me with that 'Rattle And Hum' album and (even more so) movie BS, when they suddenly decided to be a Blues band and to sound like all those artists they'd originally set out to differ from. Luckily they did recover for a while, when 'Achtung Baby!' was released (30 years ago!!), but it didn't take very long before I lost interest in what used to be my absolute favourite band.

Starting with my love of rock to discovering sexuality for the first time into becoming socially aware of the world around me and learning what it is 2 b a responsible human being and actually enjoying my life, my spirituality and cherishing those things I hold dear. Not many ,if any, other bands n the world can say they stood a testament to someones life. With or without u...I CANT LIVE WITHOUT U2! Thank God! I will never have to. Then I saw them on the Boy tour....Drums on a riser w lights, the Edge all echoing and a simple white flag Bono ran thru the entire stadium with. first time tears of joy came just from music. I knew then that I was witnessing a timeless group. told my band at the time about them we learned I will follow, stories from boys but really I wanted sooo bad to learn this tune and into the heart. Definitely a sassy riff that captures the feeling of heading over to your girl's house at 12:36am on a Friday night.

An incredibly emotional song. It simply doesn’t get any better than this. I fell in love with u2 upon hearing this. My soul rejoices whenever I hear this. It’s the greatest travesty in all of rock that they turned into a pitiful puppet for the left.

@@KPD017 I think the human refuse in the streets of SF...in a once glittering city...says all leftism has to say in that the DNC and U2 have become as corporate as can be. At least, the modern right has the small business contingent to represent grassroots possibilities over Left Wing top-to-bottom multinational rule by the few and excessively rich. Structure seems to overrule ideals, dig?
