Taiei Kin (also known as Tae-young Kim) was a second-generation Japanese born to Korean parents. Denied the opportunity to train in boxing by his mother and father, Kin instead excelled in karate competition. He showed such promise as a member of his university team that he was scouted by Master Kazuyoshi Ishii for the Seidokaikan dojo after graduation. Easily distinguishable by his open-palmed stance, Kin favored a relentless, head-to-head style which eventually earned him the 1995 Karate World Cup.
By then, he had already established himself as one of the foremost competitors in Ishii's fledgling K-1 kickboxing league. Kin's legendary stamina melded with newly-apparent technical ability, an airtight defense and mastery of clinch-fighting to make him a truly beastly opponent across multiple weight classes. Despite an initial retirement in 2000, "Kin-chan" reappeared six years later to make his mark on the Japanese MMA scene, where he used his signature striking to earn some upset victories over fan-favorite grapplers.
Kin retired for a second and final time in 2014, at age 44. Among his numerous accomplishments, his greatest may be the enduring respect of his peers, with K-1 greats Peter Aerts and Ernesto Hoost once declaring him to best competitor fighting out of Asia.
