  • Join the campaign to end EU overfishing, bit.ly/Xiyz7E - this animation was first launched in May 2012, some of it is out of date, but not the part about citizens responsibility to support decision-makers ... you can help end overfishing.

  • @MarkFletcher
    @MarkFletcher 10 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    This is a pertinent message. The issue of overfishing and overexploitation of our marine environment (and others) is massive. Something needs to be done, otherwise we'll shortly run out of fish entirely.
    I heard a relevant quote whilst I was studying marine biology. "So how then can we ensure stocks recover and fish sustainably? Don't."

    • @JoshJett
      @JoshJett 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We talk a lot about this in my environmental science classes. Personally, when I fish recreationaly I only keep fish if we'll eat them that same day.

    • @MarkFletcher
      @MarkFletcher 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good practice! Mind you, sport fishing has a minuscule impact next to industrial scale extraction.
      By far the biggest issue is bycatch and quotas. You get the odd situations where a vessel has met its quota and has to chuck back good fish to avoid being fined. Or disposing of non-target fish because quotas have been exceeded or they just don't want it. Fish thrown back is usually dead, and the populations are getting hammered for nothing. We don't have a way of fishing selectively enough, and even if we did, how would we stop the older breeding populations being completely removed?

    • @JoshJett
      @JoshJett 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree. I know recreational fishing is a drop in the bucket, and many recreational fish are not commercially harvested, but I feel so guilty if fish sits in the freezer unused. That being said, fish fried tge same day they are caught are sooo delicious. On a side note, have you ever seen Disney's "Oceans" (narrated by Pierce Brosnan)? It's one of our favorites; very well done documentary with a segment on bycatch.

    • @RoyMulder
      @RoyMulder 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mark Fletcher You highly underestimate just how many sports fishermen there are. Here in British Columbia they are finishing off the last of our rockfish stocks. These are fish with lifespans that can go up to 200 years. After spending the big bucks to go out salmon fishing, when they don't catch anything, they go fish out the local rockfish hole. It doesn't take long to wipe out a fish population when they can't reproduce fast enough to recover.

    • @MarkFletcher
      @MarkFletcher 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roy Mulder I take your point! There are obviously fish species that are more prone to this kind of pressure - I'm uk based so I must confess the majority of my fishing and marine knowledge is based on this side of the pond! Are there protections in place for the rockfish?
      I may be wrong, but I think the Americans take their sport fishing more seriously than us - so please forgive my ignorance of the pressures (not sarcastically, literally). I would guess that the sports fishermen are taking the larger, more interesting species, too... the ones with little to no commercial value?
      It reminds me of the plight of the orange roughy - cursed with being both delicious and easy to catch en-masse, it was nearly wiped out because in the early days of exploiting the fishery they didn't appreciate how long lived they are. I forget exactly, but I think they don't start breeding until they're at least 20 years old, so it's remarkably easy to be left with a severely impacted population. Thankfully they realised just in time and strong controls have allowed recovery whilst fishing more sustainably. There is hope in that regard!
      (So long as everyone is on board... It's all very well (for example) the UK having decent and strong fishing policy and controls if other European boats aren't playing by the same rules)

  • @veilen
    @veilen 10 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    And yet, in Poland (one of EU countries), fish is incredibly expensive and thus rarely end up in citizens diet. So we throw subsidiaries because of fishing limits no one observes, causing fish to be expensive commodity and to decrease citizens health in the process. In the end only fishing companies win, no one else. Or rather their shareholders, when fish is gone so are the companies. That's typical for money influenced political policies and has to be stopped.

    To anyone asking what the solution is - yes pressuring our politicians is very important but it also starts with us. The simplest thing to do is realise that we all need to limit our consumption of animal products (fish and meat included). Limiting yourself to 3 or 4 times a week is actually a much healthier diet, and this would dramatically help reducing the demand for these animal products. The reality at the moment is that many people think it is normal to have meat or fish 2 or 3 times a day, whereas this is historically fairly new in the history of our species.

    • @TheAdamant94

      Fourq Nouw yeah, because just stopping people from overeating is that easy. Besides, it won't work. Even if it were possible to stop people overeating it would only delay the problem. If we did that the population would just grow even more until we hit the limit again, but with more poverty.
      Scientifically speaking, if we can't control our own population there is no way out of this. But putting limits on fishing is a good start.

      No, I in no way insinuated that. That comment isn't even a valid point to make. Overeating is a genuine problem in terms of food production, but trying to control it is just unreasonable.
      By the way, in what way does eating only fish have anything to do with my previous comment?

    Man, this is a tough issue. The tipping point to reverse this on a global scale is huge. Its positive and great that some nations are trying to curb the supply, but business and profiteering literally do not allow a full reverse. As the middle class grows in developing countries, so will demand for fish (and meats), and we simply can't control the economies of nations outside of the EU. I was also shocked to learn that farmed fish uses so much of their non-farmed counterparts in production. Think I might pass on the smoked salmon for Christmas nibbles from now on.

    Additional difficulty is that the sea is in practise often "lawless". Even though fishers have to follow laws, when on sea they may catch way more and throw a large percentage (dead) back overboard. There also isn't a big feeling under the citizens to (1) know what is happening on sea and (2) prioritise it above regular politics.
    Now I believe it is too late to be pessimistic, so what to do? How to bring attention of this problem to the crowds, and how to control fishery. How to sustainably feed farmed fish, without using catched fish as food?

    Can you propose solutions to the overfishing problem? How can we counter this problem?
    And I also need sources really hard to convince people. Everything I try is fenced off with 'do you have any scientifical source of what those hippies are claiming?'
    I decided to give the vegetarian lifestyle a shot (it's difficult I think) to help conserve our world for at least a longer time, but I know and respect that not everybody wants to be a vegetarian.

      The solution is other people. They have to stop eat such high ammount of fish or else it won't work. Should they be forced to eat less if they can't restrict themselves? I think so, I don't see any other solution.

    Many people in my country started fishing in recent years with the use of spear gun, they post what they catch in Instagram proudly they all do it. And it's a huge over fishing... Fishermen are noticing a decrease in fish and lobsters... Unfortunately there's no law to protect sea life, even if there is implementing it would cause a big problem to the people who over fish. Korean ships come to take everything in our sea. People need to be aware of this phenomenon and tragedy...

    Seriously extreme problems need seriously strong solutions: give the oceans a global break of as many years as it is necessary. Or the profiteers will simply destroy us.

  • @SBGJansen
    @SBGJansen 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes I think by-catch is still a problem, because the oceans are getting empty even if they would keep it and sell it. By-catch often is endangered like turles and dolphins etc. To me it sounds unlikely that they ever keep the by-catch because they're going to need an extra boat if they want to keep the by-catch and the fish they were actually fishing for.

    Greed is to blame. Not just greed, but the practices involved in catching fish that are incredibly wasteful.

      Yoloanda Why? One person that is allergic to it won’t change anything. You’re just missing the taste of fish in your life. People won’t fish less because of one person. You’d need over thousands of people to not eat fish to just change it a little.

    As good as this video is, nothing will come of it. We live in generation "not my problem". Everyone has an opinion. Everyone has a voice. But no one wants to unite and do something, about anything. Instead we just post our comments online about what should be done, and go about our lives.

    This sucks hard. This is what happens when money rules the world. As long as a country can make good profits from it, they don't care what the consequence is. There's a Japanese show I like that a couple of episodes had them say, "This fish is super rare! There's only 1% of this fish left. Let's go get some!" That's humanity for you, do things now, worry later. Fishers and hunters complain about lack of animals, but that doesn't stop them from depleting the population. Also people are lazy, time is money, they don't want to take the time to fish responsibly and catch only what they need.

    I can't really connect the dots here. The video says the EU fishing policy is allowing way too much fishing. I live in a EU country and we use to have a big fishing industri and fish would be a quite cheap source of protein. But the last 20 years the industri have vanished because of the, acording to the industri, extremly harsh quotas. Not to mention the spike in the price of fish, now fish is considered fine dining.

    • @verticalFarm0
      @verticalFarm0 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you'll more likely find the big fishing quota's have gone to larger fishing ships and businesses rather than the smaller community ones because they haven't been able to compete. I don't know where you live, but here in the UK, fish is not fine dining and quite a common meal.

    The thing is, even if we were able to change the way governments manage fish stocks - the responsibility lies with the consumer. Governments will only restrict amounts of fish able to be caught which has been proven not to work in places like the north sea and is only damaging to local fishing communities. Excess fish are just thrown back. There is a solution to this, but restricting the amount caught is not it.
