The Ocean Is Running Out of Fish. Here's the Alarming Math.

  • Based on reporting, the ocean has long appeared to offer an infinite bounty of fish. But recent, more accurate research paints a far grimmer picture, with annual catch on a precipitous and potentially catastrophic decline.

Not exactly, we are currently in a commodity glut, unsustainable low monetary value for industrial metals, aluminum, iron, copper and nickel. Dropping prices for energy products like oil, coal, natural gas and increasingly renewables like wind and solar. Also a glut in agricultural production and industrial products. We are becoming more efficient in extracting, producing and manufacturing. We have also become more efficient in harvesting game from the wild. Even as stocks of these natural food sources drop we become better and better at finding and removing them from the wild! Ironically as their numbers fall, the remaining individuals rise in value, encouraging greater effort to harvest the last of those! We have experienced fisheries collapses off the coast of Canada and Peru, but the fishing assets simply moved to other waters, presumably until those are exhausted as well! This is actually a real issue that is actively ignored and forgotten in the noise about other less important topics and really needs to be addressed.

The amount of fish that are caught in each net is staggering. Watch any video on huge hauls and you’ll see the immense amount they pull up. But they don’t just do this once a day, which you’d think would be all people would need to eat. They do multiple hauls, one after another, day in and out. It’s actually insane how much they catch, and yet so much of it goes to waste because the commercial fishing industry is built around sales numbers instead of the needs of the customers. Very few people eat fish every day, even most days, and so there’s a huge chance for loss of stock. I think people should try to fish for themselves, or at the very least support local fishermen.

It's not 10 percent anymore, now it is around 20%. Also here is the logic, the entire ocean ecosystem is connected. Those fish populations on the bottom of the ocean, guess what they eat? Dead whales and large pelagic fish that sink to the bottom of the ocean. What do those large pelagic fish feed on? Schooling fish like anchovies, sardines, herring, etc. Now if we are overfishing the schooling fish and large pelagic species what are the fish at the bottom of the ocean going to eat? Most of that land at the bottom of the ocean has very little biodiversity. Keep in mind, if our highly advanced submarines can't reach there, what makes you think most fish can? The deeper you go, the less wildlife there is.

Even if we stop eating fish and meat. There will not be enough land to grow food for all of us. Overpopulation is the earth's issue with us, soon it will be our issue with us. Or something more extreme?

spinach has a much higher volume of bio available protein than does meat. If you look at the nutritional profile of your dark leafy greens you will find them to be healing powerhouses full of iron and protein and as much vitamins as some supplements. It is an overlooked incredible resource. An animal may have more protein but we can only assimilate 18% of that and it causes inflammation and a whole host of diseases such as diabetes and heart disease and cancer.
If the human population ate nothing but dark leafy greens with citrus and nuts or beans for 6 months our health would quickly go to amazing. we might have to add some more things at that point but we would all start to glow.
