Rory's split hand drill is awesome. It really does put everything into wonderful positions. And it works for all clubs and all shots down to 50 yard pitch. I've watched a lot of golf instruction videos from very capable teachers but they only focus on a single aspect of the swing per video. With Rory's drill, I find myself hitting all those "magic positions" without thinking about it. After a few weeks of practice, I've picked up distance, direction, higher ball flight, and most important of all consistency. I feel like more practice will yield a lot more of the same.
That’s true to me mate , you can add another one to this drill the one from Louis Oothuizen in which he teaches how to educate your arms in front of your body all the time without splitting your hands like this, these two are some of the best drills we need to play golf .
@@golflover8811 True. Arms in front of body and in sync with body are huge. Louis and Rory are not big guys so they have to have exceptional efficiency. Since they are about my height, they are the ones to copy. I watch slo-mo Rory swings and try to hit the same positions he does in a mirror. Rory says he likes to go for it with the driver. Interestingly, when I have the same thought my swing is more relaxed and freer which translates to better results. No, I did not invent the wheel but I am happy to roll with it.

Not particularly a huge Rory fan, but there's no doubt about his prodigious talent & willingness to share openly & honestly on this channel & others. Very helpful indeed 👍
This is a real insight to the mind of one of the Greatest ball strikers in the game. The fact that four years after making notes about some issues he is working on and Rory is making the same notes about the same issues is really, really helpful. I thought it was just me and I was going mad...lol.
Every golfers dream to have Rory golf swings 😆
Is to have*
Rory demonstrating a slapshot is all I needed
Truly a lightbulb moment for me learning about the swing
Arguably the best driver in the game
Was this filmed during his stint working with Pete Cowen? Because the split grip and towel drill is textbook Cowen
Would love to see those notes published someday.
Writing it down, absolutely helpful !👍👍👍
Just wondering if he is pulling down more with the left arm as opposed to the right. Pulling with the left seems to help shallow more and not be right arm dominate.
Great help for me after doing the drill on practice range and in pre-shot routine. I'd been hitting 4 Irons relatively badly, but 3 out of 3 GIR with the 4 iron over 9 holes yesterday. It tends to make the fixes for my specific swing flaws automatic.
I'm not a golf pro...although I have taught some golf. But this summer I showed this drill to a former tennis student and told him it is the only golf lesson he would ever need. Swing it through impact as well. You cannot get out of position.
Wow, I literally just had a lesson last week to work out some issues with my wedges and the instructor had me squeezing my towel with my fingers. He said the fingers were the key. I thought it was stupid, but just doing that like 10 times and then trying to replicate it on my grip as I swung fixed something in my swing and got me some distance back I was losing. I really don't know what it was, but I could feel the club face better in the swing and it felt more effortless.
I've done this drill before but never thought about right elbow in front of body. That's gold right there. Cripes that move he shows getting stuck is exactly what I had been trying to do to "shallow the club". I hit a fricken barn 120yds. off the golf course left last time I played.
I Thought same thing. My back swing and top of swing almost is identical to Rory. My golf pro tells me all the time. I intentionally swing from into out as much as possible but 1/3 with my driver is a push and another 1/3 I hook. This explains it. It does not happen with irons because able to close down the face more on release but with driver if you swing like Rory and don't do drills with that elbow you are going to push 1/3 of the time and hook the other 1/3 with driver. When you catch it clean with this swing it is dead straight or a beautiful high draw which makes everyone envious and they forget about the hook and push.
Hey at least nobody could say you can’t hit the broad side of a barn. 😅
great vid, but the biggest thing that Rory does (and most pros do) is the head position behind the ball at impact which allows the spatial queue to get the right arm tugged in, have the room to extend arms for strong impact and the spine angle, you should try it!
Rory, Rory, Rory!
Thank you
I bet he wouldn't stand that close to my line. That guy is brave.
Yes, my thought exactly when Rory got ready.
that dudes standing in my line
I know, it just reminds me of being at the shooting range and you always stand behind the firing line. This guy is like, na, I like a good McIlroy drive to the nuts every now and then. Wakes me up in the morning.
If Rory accidentally hit him, it would be as a big truck hit him.
I have no idea why they do that
This is a great lesson from a great player. One can't resist asking, why not hit balls with the split hand approach?
I think the single biggest problem with casual golfers, like me, is overcoming the natural impulse to flip thru impact with the wrists. Split hands should keep one from flipping.
Great stuff 👏 must try that out ...
the most inexplicable part of the game. How the feels come and go is an enigma.
No it's not, it's the density of the neurons and neurochemical state in the context of the activation of the basal ganglia.
@@EaglesXsandOs shut up

this is invaluable
My brother, who is pretty good, said to me the beginner, don't move your head.
Keep your head still like an owl,
see how its body moves frantically but
its head is rock steady.
And rotate your body around your spine as though it were a steel rod up yer butt.
Now here I am in my second year of golfing at age 72 with a new driver and
instead of extreme effort to reach 200 yards
(like with my extremely unforgiving 40 year old 5 dollar driver from Good Will)
most drives go 200 yards on average.
About a month ago I started watching Rory in slo mo on youtube
and the driver now often reaches 220-235 yards
(and much straighter for the most part,
I'm sure that's the 'forgiveness' the salesman was on about
(must be, for the ball marks are all over the club face(
the new driver, a Wilson, 9 degree, Launchpad, 2020 vintage
(so cool, every hit leaves a mark easily seen from the right angle and
easily removed with a bit of spit and polishing)))).
So, yes, I'm pretty happy and quite addicted with but one regret,
that I didn't start golfing decades sooner.
I thought I was OCD for writing things down. Turns out its a good thing. 🤷♂️
So funny!
let's go, a pro writing things down to remember like me. It really helps tho you can look over it to remember what you are doing
Question:
Can you hit balls with this drill??? Seeing Rory complete a full swing with split hands makes we wonder if you could possibly do a 50% swing into the ball itself to gain a better feel of the swing?
Did you try it?
Standing there again!? Dangerous!
yup. just like that and i hit a 297 carrying over the hill and faraway.
Pete Cowen teaches this way, and squeezing towel drill,
My man is just stood there knowing Rory wouldn’t miss hit it, if that was me his shins would have been gone. Shank.
He wouldn’t be so brave then 😂
Tbf you’re not even safe stood behind on my shots 🤦♂️😂
😂
I dont get the twisting the towel drill ?
Dont bother trying. No clue what he was after with that but i do know your hands shouldnt be doing that while swinging.
Watch Pete cowans drills. He explains it..
It's to help feel like the right hand stays on top during the takeaway which keeps the clubface square instead of rolling open.
Split handed drill is basically a basic Hurling swing
Or a hockey swing. What high handicappers like myself need to pay attention to is his positions at 9:00 & 3:00. Arms are FULLY extended to create the maximum arc & release. It takes really relaxed arms to be able to do that. If you pull the club down from the top, you're automatically increasing grip pressure which tightens arm, hand, & wrists, & prevents the full extension thru the ball where it's traveling fastest. This is also the issue with hitting fairway woods due to not letting the arms fully extend thru the shot because of tension in the arms causing topped shots. Any body tension during the swing is a killer of distance & consistency. Swing the club, don't pull it. MUCH easier said than done! Ever wonder, like millions of others, have a great practice swing & lousy real swing? That's why. Your practice swing has no effect on your score or any pressure so you let it swing, but the moment a ball is introduced, everything changes. Instead of swinging, you think about hitting it & your muscles immediately tighten by pulling the club in an effort to hit the ball hard & that's where it falls apart. We've all heard "let the ball get in the way" which seems impossible when you're trying to hit it with force but that's what it takes. You MUST be RELAXED throughout the entire swing for maximum speed & consistency. That takes mental focus & is why golf is a mental game. Train your brain to control your body.
Nice Nike jersey.
damn that first drive was noice
306 yd drive just fucking around.. teaching while he's doing it... Dude is a rockstar...
Very strange place to stand when someone, even Rory, is hitting a ball. The host has the Charisma of a wall!
from this angle, it feels like the host should stand more on the back of Rory
than comfortably standing like
great questioning and great drill there
Even it being Rory, Martin Hall is a brave man!
My role model...I love you so much
Nice meeting you Fan ✔Thanks for supporting my Dream and Career ...
If he stood in that position while I was hitting driver, it would be like playing Russian Roulette.
I believe its a real condition but obly the mocements and tiks bot the words they say i feel they say the words for comedic effect
That guy standing in front of Rory with driver is a seriously thought over or not ? a slice might be a viral i guess
Imagine if he shanks…
It's annoying where that guy stands as Rory hits and then he adds to my annoyance by being completely disinterested in the shots themselves. If that's the case, why even be in the frame? He's just too cool for school.
The interviewer lacks safety consciousness. His position is an absolute act of stupidity. No body should ever position themselves in the front of anyone hitting a golf ball.
Great info but what kinda idiot is he to stand ‘in front’ of a player teeing off, he distracts from focusing on watching Rory whilst driving past his face 😱👎🏻
Weird accent. A hybrid of american & british
Thats because he's Irish 🙂
Well the American accent has some of its historic roots in the mass migration of Irish to America, so I think what you mean to say is Americans accents are a bit like Irish.
No that's not what i meant to say....
I said
( that's because he's Irish)
because he's Irish born in Ireland 🇮🇪 not an American at all....you need to get your facts right 😉
