  • Welp, living in the Great White North, it is that time of year. I seem to have lost my voice due to a cold so no narration for this weeks video. I know I know, now the video will actually be watchable right? haha
I've been meaning to take this footage and incorporate it into a Mastercam lesson, step by step in Mastercam then showing the resulting motion both in Machsim and on the actual machine. The lack of a voice has put this on hold for now, just know it is still on the agenda and will eventually get made.
This toolpaths used for this part were quite simple. Dynamic OptiRough used in 4 planes to rough the part. 5 axis Parallel to semi finish and finish. 2D Dynamic to cut the slots. Deburr to get the sharp edges. 2D Contour to part off.
The most difficult part of this program is the Parallel toolpath. These 5 axis toolpaths do have a lot of options in them and if you start off down the wrong track at the beginning of your toolpath creation, things can get real messy. Once I get my voice back I'll share some 5 axis toolpaths workflows that should keep you on track.
Here's hoping the voice is back next week!

Just called a dovetail cutter. 5th Axis sells them on their site, this is the one used in the video...

Oh ok, yes. The part was 'tabbed' off. Basically machining the part away from the extra material in the vise, much the same way you would do on a lathe. The difference being in milling you leave little tabs so you can machine as much as possible to the finished size, then break the part off by hand, then file/sand the tabs to blend into the milled surface.
We will be coming out with a much more detailed video on this part soon.
