    Nice cabin. I agree with on cutting back allot of those trees. You get a wind storm and they might be coming down on the cabin plus not to mention fires. Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks kawartha hillbilly. Glad you like the videos. My cabin is my "happy place" as they say. I can just relax at the cabin or within a short distance, get out in the bush and hike, hunt, fish etc. Great place to spend time. Thanks for watching.

    Load up the stove with dry wood, put a homemade firestarter at the bottom and you have a fire. No paper, no kindling, no layering the fire with bigger and bigger pieces of wood, no building a coal bed. Learned this from a homesteader and by gosh it works!

    We have a wood fire at home...in the city!! We put newspaper on the bottom and small bits of wood on top called kindling to get it going!! Then we put the bigger logs on after that and it should continue!!

      Glad you liked the video jason yorch! Now is the time of year I enjoy being at the cabin. When fall arrives, the weather cools off, bugs disappear, colors change, wood fire in the stove, setting up deer stands and fall chores getting ready for winter. How can it get any better than that!

    I've noticed your property looks similar to Joes on Northern Seclusion. You must be way up north also. I have been looking at property up near Ely MN for a vacation home. My problem is I live in northeastern California and it's going to be a long drive. I have time though because I am retired. Thanks for the video I enjoy seeing MN. My relatives came over from the old country in the 1800s and settled in the iron range section of MN. On my father's side, they all settled in the twin cities.

    • @georgelokken2900
      @georgelokken2900 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The walls are covered with tongue and groove popple which is very light, almost white color, when new. What you see now is darker since it has faded some over the last 35 years since it was installed. Still looks good after all these years.

    Nice cabin. I never quite understood how you (or anyone else) can have such a nice place, in an uninhabited area, and not be broken in to..... Maybe I just don't have enough faith in my fellow man...lol

    • @living_north
      @living_north  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My first break-in was last summer. Unusual circumstance and he was caught. Didn't get everything back but most of it. Not bad in 40 years I guess but still makes me mad. Hard not to loose faith in people with the world we live in but we only make ourselves sick worrying about that all the time. Trying to have faith in humanity is what keeps a person going I guess. Thanks for watching the videos NattyBumppo48!

    I’ve changed All my locks 🔐 to Security Storage Locker locks.
    No room to use Bolt Cutters & easy to cover, like you do. Usually a better lock.
    I Spray Red Grease into them, it lasts & doesn’t wash out from rain.
    First couple of test openings you need to wipe the key clean.

    • @living_north
      @living_north  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching the channel rhino mite. I first bought a Lopi stove in 1985 when I built the addition on the original log cabin. I did not like that stove and returned it and got the quadrafire instead. I have been very happy with it over the years and it does a very nice job of heating the place. The cabin has the two rooms, 12x16 and 14x16 so thats a little over 400 sq. ft. It's not a large area but the stove does great and will hold a fire over night and have coals to start a good burn in the morning. I might have looked at a yotul or vermont casting stove but the cost of those were much greater and I went with the quadrafire. I guess I have no regrets after all these years.

    • @living_north
      @living_north  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure about that. Didn't see any when I was in Alaska last summer. Most people want a little more luxury when they rent a place. I have been watching a young couple that have an off grid homestead in Alaska. It is called Simple Living Alaska on TH-cam. Check it out if you haven't already seen it. They have a nice place they started from scratch and is work in progress as you would expect. Good luck in your search for a place to stay in Alaska.

    What kind of shingles did you use on the cabin?

    • @living_north
      @living_north  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are metal shingles that were installed a couple years ago. They are shingle style instaed of the long panels you see on most metal roofs. They are a little less expensive actually than the long panels but take a little longer to install because you screw each one 4 times with cleats rather than one long run with the panels. There is a video I did on the metal roof in one of the earlier videos from the cabin. Take a look at that if you get a chance. Thanks for watching!

    nice location . ı wonder that why do you need fire newspapers

    • @living_north
      @living_north  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I first burn the newspaper to warm up the stovepipe. It gets very cold up north so the chimney does not draft very good until the air warms in the stovepipe. When I burn the newspaper the draft works well then and the kindling will start easily to get the fire burning. I have found this method to work the best when it is cold out.

  • @jws3925
    @jws3925 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    How did you get electricity back there??? I have a cabin about 2 miles off the "main" dirt road and they want over $20,000 to bring back electricity!! We have to use solar and generator.

    • @living_north
      @living_north  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My cabin is not far off the highway so was within the distance allowed for electricity to be run to the site for no charge. Also was true for the fiber optics cable run to the cabin a few years ago. Sometimes I wish I was further away from the highway but then I remember the advantages as well such as power, internet and being able to snowblow out the road in the winter so we can use the place all year long. I guess all that makes a little road noise tolerable. Thanks for watching our video John.

    what brand stove is that?

    • @living_north
      @living_north  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jerry the stove is a Quadra-fire wood stove. I first got a Lopi but did not like it so returned it and got this one. I have been very happy with it and it has worked well for 33 years so I guess it is good. I see many of the new Scandinavian stoves at one of the stores here in town and they look very nice, work well I'm sure but are very expensive. I don't have any reason to change the quadra-fire so don't plan on doing that but it is always fun to see what is out there these days. The one thing is the newer stoves tend to be a little more efficient as the technology has changed so much.

    All that loosely crumpled newspaper in a cold stove cause creosote buildup. A tiny bit of newspaper and tinder. Then a tightly twisted "pretzel" of newspaper lit and held close to the inner exhaust--draw. Use that to then light tinder and add tiny branches.
