    GWAR's music is amazing. And when you're watching the videos or at a show... it's OK to laugh. It's not supposed to be serious.

  • @NorwoodingSkullMask
    @NorwoodingSkullMask 6 ปีที่แล้ว +67

    So GWAR's premise is that they are supposed to be aliens from another planet who want to destroy the human race, which is the lead singer, Dave Brockie's way of being able to look at humanity from an outside perspective and express his feelings with how we treat each other, and all the bad stuff in the world. The band also has a great sense of humor and don't really take anything seriously, besides their masterful playing.

    • @imperfectbeliever8127

      patrick miller you are correct in your assessment. they are one of my favorite bands because the music is undeniable. the don't get lost in any playing fad like trying to go 100 mph or it sounding like an in organized clusterfuck. always heavy, always a great groove.

    7:37 - that was, indeed, what the live shows were like. You'd go into a GWAR show knowing you'd get splattered with something.
    Yes, GWAR was pretty cheesy - serving up colossal heaping helpings of ham-and-cheese was always their shtick, costumes and all, but then that sort of thing has been a "thing" in shock rock and metal music since at least the days of KISS and Alice Cooper. GWAR tends to make up for it with some blistering groove metal, for metal fans who are into that sort of thing (and really, there's nothing wrong with that!)

    Going to see GWAR is like going to see a live reenactment of a B grade horror movie. Over the top with fake blood and fake god knows what else. They kill things (sometimes gigantic things) on stage, drench the audience with fake blood, and usually feed a few audience members/key VIPs to a giant alien worm thing, and somehow manage to keep the level of musicianship and artistry high. Definitely one of the best live shows I've ever seen.
    Also, they're super tongue-in-cheeky. GWAR is how metalheads admit to having a sense of humor.

    Gwar has been one of my all time favorite bands for over 20 years. Their live shows are so fun and full of blood. Wear a white tee for a souvenir. Y’all need to check them out. The lyrics play off of their grand storyline of beings from outer space who come to slaughter the human race. It’s full of comedy and satire. Thank you! This made me smile and glad y’all loved it! I've seen Gwar twice in my life. I don't remember either time. First time a combination of exhaustion, dehydration, and intoxication resulted in me passing out with my upper body splayed out on the stage. Oderus Urungus was kind enough to piss on my face until I woke up, and promptly went and took a nap on the couch.
    The second time I took a steel toe boot to the temple. A crowd surfer failed to get sufficient height on his jump, and got spun around, and just fuckin' clocked me right in the head. I woke up on the same couch I napped on a year previous.

    The video is definitely a representation of their live show. A common tradition for going to a Gwar show is you go with a plain white T shirt and then you hang it up after the show because you get splattered with all sorts of fake blood and other stuff. They're definitely a gimmicky band but they still have riffs and good music which sets them apart. Cool to see you guys doing a reaction for them!

    • @ABRAsylum
      @ABRAsylum 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can understand why some people aren't into the costume thing. It comes off, to me, as a bit cringy. I've never heard a song from a band that "dresses up" that I enjoy and I think it's because they seem less focused on the instrumentation and lyricism of their music and more focused on the spectacle of putting on a show. Which is fine, but it's not for everyone.

      Worse, metal is passed over and is never given any consideration. Telling “non-metal” people what you’re into musically is the equivalent of telling people you’re a fan of professional wrestling. I’m not skeered to declare my love for metal, just sayin the reactions you get, especially from the ladies, they’re all like.... *crickets
      You know what, I like it that way. I don’t want metal to ever be accepted or popular. Keep it underground, keep it heavy and sometimes weird.

    GWAR's live shows are INSANE. It's the craziest, bloodiest most metal puppet show ever. All of their instruments spray blood (and other fluids), not to mention the giant robots and celebrity effigy dismemberments (all of which spray blood). And, when Dave (the original singer) was alive... his alien phallus, the Cuttlefish of Cthulhu would spray blood.. so he was basically ejaculating blood in your face. Fans usually wear white T-shirts so they can save the "blood stained" shirts as mementos. So, yeah.. this band is a trip live. Many clubs won't book them due to the mess.

    Gwar started out as an idea for a punk band(Death Piggy) doing a soundtrack for a science fiction horror movie featuring these characters called "Scumdogs Of The Universe". The band practiced in this old Dairy Warehouse , and across the hall was an art student who is making costumes for his movie. And one night the band wore the costumes on stage, and people loved it. 30 years later, they're still wearing the costumes on stage and the movie has still yet to be made. It was an accidental, genius idea. They struggled to make it work at times, but overall you can't argue with results.
