Not quite sure which version you watched because maybe you just cut it out. In the original British version Sarah wakes up in the cave after the last scare with Juno in the car. This is another level of evil from the writers..
I've watched a couple of reactions to this movie lately and, yeah, each one seems to be missing that last reveal, so I guess there must be some other "slightly less traumatic" version floating around out there that people are reacting to bc the version you're talking about is the only one I'd ever seen before.
Even without the creatures, this movie is horrifying with just the story of these people being lost and stuck in a cave. Then the creatures come out and adds to the horror.
The claustrophobia in this movie is already terrifying by itself. Even without the monsters, this movie never fails to disturb me with all the uncomfortably realistic shots of them exploring underground. As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I thought "Are they watching the original ending or the US ending?" Dark (no pun intended) downer ending or jump scare.
I used to have all kinds of "getting chased by a monster" type nightmares when I was a kid. One day, one of the dreams turned into a lucid dream partway through and, realizing I was dreaming, I decided to turn around and go after the monster. When I turned around, it was gone. I spent the rest of the dream looking for it (hunting it, really) and couldn't find the monster or anyone else in the dream world. Once I realized I was dreaming, it basically became an empty set. After that, I never had another monster dream. It was like my brain went, "Well, that doesn't work anymore" and gave up on the "monster dream" scenario. Now, instead, whenever I have a nightmare, it's an emotional nightmare where I'm arguing with someone I care about and, no matter what I say, they're just saying horrible things to me. Tbh, I'd rather have the monster nightmares back.
I was on vacation in London when this came out and saw it the day it released. I had seen a couple trailers for it, but they didn't show anything about the creatures. So it was a huge surprise when they showed up!
Here in Canada, it was a coin toss on what version you might get buying the dvd. The ones made and sold for Canada had the UK/international cut. But a lot of bigger distributors like Walmart often just sold US copies repackaged for Canada(you can tell by the package/label. If the actual box has both English and French, it was made for Canada. If it has an all English package with a second cover/label added on to abide by bilingual language requirement laws, it’s likely an American made copy repackaged for sale in Canada). Used to really bug me before digital distribution at theatres, because even though we’re not nearly as prudish as American censors rating movies here in Canada, we would often end up with the American cut of films because it was easier to lump us in with the larger American market for distribution. Still way better than growing up being a lover of cinema in the US though(15 year old me got to see Terminator 2 in theatres because it was rated 14AA, while in the US it was rated R.
