Using the Sigma 30 1.4 DC DN on a Sony fullframe mirrorless camera

  • Looking for a poor man's fast 35mm prime lens, I tried to hack the Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary lens, made for APS-C mirrorless camera. Unfortunately it didn't act like the Sigma 30mm f2.8 Art lens: removing the rear plastic baffle didn't effect the strong vignetting. But, with a little post-processing crop (easy to do with a batch crop in Lightroom over hundreds of pics in just few seconds) I can obtain a nearly 38mm field of view with a f1.4 max aperture. This lens gives good sharpness, good contrast and saturated colors and also a nice bokeh.

    Can someone please explain what im missing, this is an apsc lens and my a7iii has apsc mode so that would cancel the vignette right? The only way you have this vignette issue is if you shot on a full frame camera in full frame mode right??

  • @twentyfifthjt7888

    I was kinda dissappointed that the hard vignette was smaller than the 16mm 1.4.. but then you removed the baffle & I shat bricks. I did not expect that. Cool trick.. really considering getting that A7siii & keeping my Sigma Primes & getting a Tamron Zoom to keeps things light.

      It works, however the image projected by the lens doesn’t cover the entirety of the camera lens so you have to consider a few things. 1.) put the camera into apsc mode and it will crop the image in camera so you don’t see the area that the lens doesn’t cover. 2.) leave the camera in full frame mode and crop out the area that the lens doesn’t cover after you export the photo or 3.) leave the camera in full frame mode and use clear image zoom to hide the areas where the lens doesn’t cover. Another thing to consider, when doing video in 4k 30p on the A7C the camera automatically crops in 1.2 times which I’ve found nearly removes the areas that the lens doesn’t cover and leaves a nice looking video with full focus capabilities.

    yes you can do that automatic inside the camera. the main problem is we will lost the image quality and the pixel. it make our image smaller that the usual and our image quality is poor. so how you deal with that?? can you fix it ?? 15 MP will be lost

    • @NicolòMoioli
      @NicolòMoioli  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      pijatan studio sure you can do the automatic in-camera crop but, doing so, you will loose a part of good image (you will obtain a 45mm equivalent instead of a about 38mm equivalent). Doing crop you won't loose image quality but you'll just have a lower resolution. The solution is to use a high res camera: an a7r will give you about 28mpx, a 24mpx a7 will give you about 18 mpx while an RII or an RIII will give you about 32mpx. That's not so bad and, definitely, not so poor. the fix to this issue is to buy a full frame 35mm lens which costs much more money.

    • @pijatanstudio1500

      i am using a6000 a6500 and a7ii. for the first time using an apsc lens mounted to a full frame body i felt it wooww.. and still 3 or 4 project i don't realized that the image turn into a small file.. and i got curious when i saw my files is only 1 or 2 mb each photo..then i zooming in the photoshop i got disappointed about that.. i thought that i can use it just same like canon lens (red dot) can used by apsc and ff body without loosing an image quality and mp. so i search for the solution or tutorial how to use apsc lens into a ff body without loosing an image quality and alsoMegapixel till now i can't find it.. if the only solution is to buy a ff lens, for now it is to expensive for me to buy it. heheheheh

    • @NicolòMoioli
      @NicolòMoioli  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Canon red dot lenses are for fullframe. You can use them on a FF camera as well as on an APS-C camera. You don't loose quality or resoluzion and you'll not have a cropping factor. BUT, if you take a square white dot canon lens, designed for the APS-C sensor, and mount it onto a FF camera, you'll see that the camera automatically switches to APS-C mode, lowering (halfing) the image resolution.
      EVERY FF camera of every brand act the same as Sony and as Canon. When you mount an APS-C lens on a FF body, the camera switch to APS-C mode. Again, you won't loose quality, you just loose resolution (and, obviously, you reduce the zooming ability in photoshop)

    • @pijatanstudio1500
      @pijatanstudio1500 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ok thanks for the explanations... but i have one question about sony lens.. that can used like canon red dot lens.. is there any sony lens system like canon lens system?? for example red dot lens tah can use by ff and apsc without loosing the resolution?

    • @NicolòMoioli
      @NicolòMoioli  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      pijatan studio any Sony marked as "FE" can be used both on aps-c and FF cameras without loosing resolution, while the ones marked just with the "E" letter are intended to be used on aps-c cameras. The top lenses of the Sony system (like the L series on Canon system) are the "G Master" ones (GM)

    ciao ho una sony a7iii e già uso un ottica apsc su questa macchian quale il sigma 18-35 ma mi piacerebbe avere un medio tele molto più piccolo e compatto del 18-35 da usare anche su un piccolo jimbal. Croppando dovrebbe diventare circa un 45 massimo 48 mm quindi abbastanza versatile. Mi piacerebbe sapere se in video la qualità rimane la stessa che se lo provassi su un a6500 e anche l'autofocus se va

    • @NicolòMoioli
      @NicolòMoioli  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ciao. A livello di velocità e precisione di AF funziona tutto come sulle altre Sony. Anzi, sulla 7III dovrebbe essere più performante che sulla 6500. Anche a livello di qualità di immagine, sulla 7III probabilmente performa meglio, in virtù della sua densità inferiore di pixel rispetto alla 6500. Non sono però del tutto convinto che sia una buona scelta (sia come lunghezza focale che come apertura) da montare su una gimbal: presumendo di muoverti molto, con la gimbal, credo sia più utile avere una focale più corta e un diaframma più chiuso per avere la maggior profondità di campo possibile e non impazzire coi fuochi

    Great video!
    For those that seem confused in the comment sections… the authors intent is to show how much image is projected by the crop lens across a full frame sensor. Since it doesn’t cover the entirety of the camera lens, you have to consider a few things.
    To avoid all the above work arounds, many choose to only use full frame lenses on full frame cameras. However, those lenses tend to be heavier and more expensive.
