Same. In my opinion, the US remake is inferior. But it is a matter of taste. Ringu relies more on slow building terror and a grounded atmosphere, while the US version is heavy on special effects jump scares and action. So, I'm eager to see how you feel about the original. Just a heads up, never watch the US remake of The Eye, watch the original instead.
Yeah, I just wish you had started with the Japanese original. The American version seems a bit infantilized and with those character changes it's like forced into overused tropes. But still, if this one were the original it would still be a great movie, and it is good anyway. I'm not complaining, I'm happy you're doing it - after all it's already a classic and done it in such a short time since release.
I saw this in theaters with my cousin. We were just terrified out of our minds by the TV scene, and went outside in the dark for my mom to pick us up. We get in my mom's van, still trying to calm down. When suddenly my mom excitedly tells us to look behind us in the backseat. I kid you not, my mom had just purchased a new TV. It was sitting right behind us in the vehicle. We legit screamed in terror, and sat shaking in fear the whole ride home. My mom never liked me seeing scary movies after that. 😆
I like when people recall specific memories, those are precious moments, although that time was a terrifying one for you, but I like it and I can absolutely imagine that moment when you were in the van with the TV at the back, hahaha, I had a similar experience where I watched a scary movie, and coincident happen right after, epic! XD
The freakiest twist in a horror movie was when that kid said why did you let her out why did you help her when the whole time you thought that he was on her side and you were doing something good
This movie was one my most haunting, freaked-out, and best theater experiences. I was with a girl, and we just randomly picked The Ring. We had NO IDEA what it was. We hadn't seen a trailer, we didn't know it was thriller/horror - we knew NOTHING. The movie haunted me for weeks, and it freaked me out so much that I eventually became a huge fan of it. It's so impactful because it's so good. The way it's all put together is phenomenal.
Man watching this reaction made me realized yet again how well made this remake was done. Like there are so many great little details in this that really make it an iconic flick. Maybe not the scariest or thought provoking horror movie but definitely iconic.
You probably will never get a horror movie like this anymore, focuses on storytelling, character building, atmosphere setting, and show you the right amount of scares which ultimately brings you the effect just like what Jaws did to swimmers. It didn't rely on constant jumpscares like horror movies nowadays, when you finish the movie, you forget everything about it afterwards. In my opinion, The Ring is one of the best remakes and also one of the best horrors to date.
I had the DVD that came out after this. It had an option to watch the full video that was on the tape. Of course I watched it. The cool thing was, that when you watched it, it disabled all the buttons on the DVD player so you couldn't stop it. Then it went to black for like 30 seconds and then played the sound of a phone ringing. really cool. Really creepy.
Oh I love to see reactions to this movie ! I saw it on Halloween when it first came out and it scared the crap out of me. I mean it haunted me for about a year. I couldn't get those images out of my head. What a masterpiece. I have seen the original Ringu but this seemed scarier to me , probably because I saw this one first. Still good though. Awesome channel, you two. Always enjoyable. Love y'all. 😊👋👋👍
Great reaction as always. The scene with samara coming out the tv is so iconic. You don’t need to watch the original if you don’t want to, it’s not better. One of the rare occasions when an American remake improves upon the original.
I watched this movie in theaters when it came out. And for weeks, I would have paranoid hallucinations of Samara standing in my bedroom doorway in the middle of the night hahaha! The scene were Aiden asks why would Rachel help her friggin gave me goosebumps!
That’s truly terrifying. I’m sorry that would happen to you. No other movie has scared me this much, and I think a part of me would die if I saw that. I would always run up my basement stairs thinking she was chasing me, and that was bad enough. 😢
Yeah, I remember watching this movie once when my parents were away for a few days... I would see shapes and shadows that looked like Samara everywhere and I couldn't sleep with the lights off...
As a publicity stunt, the studio dropped copies of the 'tape' in random locations in Los Angeles. When I was working as a public safety officer in a Beverly Hills mall, a copy was found in the parking lot. It was brought to the security office, were me and a couple of officers watched it. We had no idea what it was until the movie was released.
The Ring and The Grudge films terrified me as a kid. Hope you two watch them all in time. Some are better than others, but it helps learn the full story of them both.
The fact that the ring still holds weight as a horror movie contender is just amazing to me and makes me really happy that I was alive to witness how much chaos and trauma it gave people back in the early 2000s. I’ll never forget how intense the beginning of the movie was just literally every minute was just so intense I didn’t want to move as a child watching it 😂 anyways thanks for doing this movie
Many people might not know this but this remake of the Japanese original was directed by Gore Verbinski, who later directed some of the Pirates of The Caribbean movies =) I think he did a great job! Probably one of the best remakes out there.
Let Me In was a remake of Let The Right One In. Probably the best American remake of an international horror movie. I watched both and amazed how good a job the American one did. Both will scare you and creep you out equally. One particular "twist" was "removed" in the remake, but in hindsight, it was a fair choice because it would have been like a clone of the original, too identical. Still, creepy as hell.
No joke, this is my #1 favorite horror movie of all time and it easily surpasses the original material with quite a few poignant themes added to the mix (how omnipresent media is in our life [perfect to spread a curse - should change to smartphones/internet these days!], how it alters our perspective of the world, not to mention the entire strained mother & son relationship subplot, etc.). Hearing the "unaltered" sequence of Samara saying "But I do, and I'm sorry, it won't stop." is absollutely chilling. Yup, Samara with her power of projected thermography would burn these images of horror into the animals and her adoptive parents head to torment them, and it didn't look like an issue of lacking nurturing, it was all her being evil. That twist and the fact that evil wins in the end with Racheal being forced to spread the curse is just the perfect ending for this movie. IGNORE ALL SEQUELS. They are incredibly bad and ruin what made the first one great.
I saw this movie in the theater around Halloween 2002 when I was thirty. Along with Paranormal Activity in 2007, no movie in the past 20 years affected me so much. I was a lot like you were afterwards, I was unsettled but couldn’t say why. I love the movie now (probably seen it 20 times), but I was gutted watching it with a bunch of strangers in public. I was still living with my parents and working and was so thankful that my mom and dad (who were 71 and 72) were next door to my bedroom and I wasn’t living alone like I do now.
At the time...Japanese horror was all the rage, and Ringu must have been the scariest movie I had seen up to that point. The pale Japanese girl with long black hair has become so Iconic that now 20 years later, people still cosplay to that look, and it's still creepy, especially during Halloween. So I can relate to what you just said. I was around 20 something and we had gone to the cinema to watch those movies....People actually walked out and screamed during the movie!
I saw this when I was thirteen and legitimately I was terrified of everything after. Psycho had the shower scene, sure. But this made me afraid of showering, sleeping, watching TV, silence; couldn't escape it lol
Chatting with my daughter about The Ring and she said she would keep her TV near a window so that on the seventh day when Samara appears she could lean the TV out of the window and just watch Samara fall out of it 😂
My grandmother went with me to see this. I feel bad because she didn't want to go to the theater again after that. Once the first scare was on screen she turned away towards me and just smiled at my reactions. She was just happy I enjoyed it.
My little sister's not afraid of any spooky entities but Samara. As thai, we have like a bunch of top-notch horrors that are far scarier and fucked our sleep more than this but she still gives this film the scariest for her. the 'watching videotape and then dying in 7 days' plot is far too real for her. She's now 20, and even saying the name Samara still creeps her out.
I didn’t think this movie scared me until after I watched it. 2am the movie ended, and I really liked it. Then I walked to the bathroom and found myself freaking out, looking over my shoulder.
Eventually after watching "The Ring" and "The Grudge", you have have have to watch the Japanese "Sadako vs. Kayako" (The Ring vs. The Grudge). You don't need to watch the Japanese versions of "The Ring" and "The Grudge" to see the vs. movie. it's good, goofy fun 😁
I really hope you guys react to Ring 2! I think that's an incredible movie, especially for a sequel! This movie scared so many people back when it came out originally because people thought the tape was really somewhere out there and that if they watched it, they would actually die. It was like the VHS version of a chain letter email. 😂
Ring 2 is definitely a big downgrade in quality from this one, which is a shame too since the director of the Japanese original helmed that sequel. But it's not like the Japanese films weren't often subject to really stupid plot details and sub par acting. But I do think Hideo Nakata was just the wrong choice for an American $50 million English language film. It comes off cheap even though it's a budget increase. and without spoiling things, when Rachel visits Sissy Spacek and they discuss who Samara's father is, that stuff is so dumb. And that's the stuff you honestly avoid by not watching the Japanese films. Once it gets into possession and ancient Ocean gods I think it's too much. I think The Ring is best as a stand alone ghost story, it is very unique as ghost stories go. Once they free Samara / Sadako from the tape is just becomes normal ghost movie which imo is a lot less cool.
in 2019 my 11 yr old daughter went as Samara for halloween. we went to the Louisville halloween parade and everyone knew who she was dressed as and loved her costume. I used to call her Samara when she was younger because she would put her hair in her face and walk creepy to scare. she would scare me good lol. I saw this at the drive in with my grandma.
Once, a buddy of mine wrote to me, asking if I wanted to do something that night. I said "not really, started a movie half an hour ago." "Which one?" "The Ring." "Ok, then have fun." And 1.5 hours later the fucker called me. Dear Lord, my heart almost stopped.
This is the first movie in a long time that scared me when I first saw it. I was alone in the house, watching on the little TV in the kitchen. I watched the whole thing standing in the corner of the counter as far away from the TV as I could get. I haven't found a movie since that scared me and interested me all the way through.
I am one of those purists you spoke about, watched Ringu first. I like both movies...........Thank you for the reaction video, I love the slow burn of this film brings me back in time.....
I always felt that the movements of Samara were the scariest part. I.e. moving closer to the victim without appearing to walk at all. But it's just a movie. Only things I've seen do that are spiders *shudders* hahaha.
@0:53 IM DEEAAD XDD the way she looks in the camera after he says " you'll find out.." looks straight out of The Office or something. cant wait to watch, Love yalls channel
My cousin and I watched this movie as kids. I distinctly recall that cousin turning the tv in her bedroom to face bedroom wall while she slept because the movie scared her. lol. Also, I remember that I covered my eyes when they showed the videotape the first time I watched.
I started off watching two other reactor channels. Dasha of Russia I watch because Dasha is adorable and everything even remotely sad makes her cry and it makes me remember why I loved a movie the first time I watched it. Also I want to hold her and comfort her. She's like a sad kitten I watch Popcorn in Bed because Cassie, and her sister Carly, when she's on, get terrified when movies are scary and try to hide behind their blankets. It's hilarious! What they both have in common is that the reactors are people I know I'd like. Dasha is the sweetest thing ever and Cassie is a fine woman that anyone would be proud to have as a friend. The "You, Me and the Movies" couple are great too. He's a friendly, affable guy that I'd happily hang out with, and she's kinda special. I saw something where she was thanking him for putting up with her when she had some issues, and it was so sweet I fell in love with them both. Also, she has beautiful expressive eyes, and she gets house goosebumps when scared. What's not to love?
I haven't seen the second movie. I don't know if they go further into what Samara's powers are. But it's said in this movie that she made the tape out of nothing. When the doctor was asking her about the pictures that look like x-rays, Samara says that they just are. Meaning she created them from her mind. Like she willed them into existence. And the tape is the same thing. Great reaction. Maybe you'll check out The Grudge sometime. It's made by the same director and released around the same time too. It's another movie that'll likely give you goosebumps over and over this The Ring did.
This is one of my favorite ghost movies ever. It's one of the few ghost movies that follows the rules for ghosts to a "T"! Not many do. Just an FYI. The major clue is when Rachel is watching the Samara tape, she says it will never stop. This is why finding her body and putting her at peace didn't work. She can never be at peace.
@@Astral0muffiN I was first introduced to Silent Hill then the Mist… only horror movie that has ever “scared” me in my teen to adult years is Insidious. Everything else is mellow. Unfortunately I don’t get excited for horror nowadays cause I’m not easily scared 😅
@@sharnieb2723 Then I guess you can say you have a refined palette, or maybe a high tolerance. But a high palette... you'd have to hotbox the shit outa your apartment to get that.
Pretty much all of the film was shot in Washington State, with the exception of the lighthouse which is in Newport, Oregon. Personally, I would have used the Destruction Island lighthouse off of Kalaloch, Washington, but they didn't. The Quinault ferry was used in this movie and was decommissioned in 2007 and has since been scrapped. The bridge that can be seen in one of the clips is the Deception Pass bridge, and that shot of the stone bridge over the waterfall looks like Christine Falls on Mt. Rainier, but I'm not sure if they had permission to film at that location. There are even a few comics out there punking Samara by putting the TV on the window sill so when she comes out she falls out the window, or another one shows putting a tv in front of the main TV so she crawls from one into the other. Interestingly enough, I've been to Samarra, Iraq and they have a crazy-looking spiral minaret there that always reminded me of the Tower of Babel. The more you know...
I never thought about it before, but now i can't unthink the image of Samara dragging the dude back into his chair and positioning it purposefully to illicit the most shocking reaction, as if it was one last gotcha scare to Rachel since she can't really kill anymore.
This movie will always have a creep factor for me. I was maybe six or seven when it came it out. I remember watching the scene where it shows the video tape in whole, as soon it was over my parents call a call right then...it was a telemarketer but it was a creepy coincidence I'll never forget.
Great that you guys reacting to this. Just to share an experience after watching the original Ringu in the theater with some acquaintances. We were discussing about the movie and other scary stuff throughout the night and got so amped up that we decided to watch the first screening on the next morning. When I reached home that day, the house phone rang and I picked up to hear nothing but static and weird garbles. I knew none of the people I watched the movie earlier with had my home number so for the next 7 days I was jumpy as hell.
I feel bad that Mrs. Movies had such an unpleasant experience but it just goes to show how well "The Ring" was made. There are quite a few scary moments but I think one of the scariest is when Aiden gets frightened when he finds out Rachel helped free Samara. Then what's supposed to happen?! What have they unleashed?!?! This is going to get worse?!?!?! The original story is a novel. I think the Japanese movie is a more faithful adaption but there are a number of things that didn't work well when attempting to convert it into a movie and I think the US version did an excellent job around those issues making it a better movie experience. Other than those changes, both movies are extremely similar. Even all of the settings look alike. I was disappointed with "The Ring 2". "Rings" was all right.
I'm on Mr. Cowboy Movies side this time. Pauly Shore movies suck. Watching any of his movies, except Encino Man, takes 5 years off your life-span according to D.A.A. reports
Watched this alone for the first time. I think i was 15. Phone rang as the credits rolled. Checked the caller ID, it was my girlfriend calling. Didn't answer....just in case. I called her back.
'Everytime I watch it, I feel like I'm a little closer to dying too' Though said with regards the movie, what a fundamental fact. As I type this comment, my life approaches its end, it gets closer and we cannot reverse nor pause. Fascinating.
To me this is one of the rare occasions were the US version tops the original one. The original japanese version is great, but this remake is, at least to me, much scarier in tone. Doesn't happen often, but sometimes a great director can make a good source material even better.
This was during the Japanese Horror craze and also during the Jump-Scare era of film-making. Which I can understand why you say this one is better. IMO, this is the movie that probably perfected the jump scare and fake-scare tactics that we all know today. Some people say the Scream movies did that, but those films kinda spoofed horror tropes. That being said, yes I agree the director has to get credit for remaking a classic horror movie by using these now recognizable tropes and gimmicks.
Agreed, imo the american version is better in every way. Specially the details they implemented that intertwine with each other in a way that makes the story more "cohesive".
The first time I saw this, I was scared to be alone in a room with a screen for months. I couldn't get the creepy media images out of my head. I've watched this twice since then, and it gets way less scary with multiple viewings. Instead I just admired the sound design, the direction, and Naomi.
Ringu is a little bit scary for a first time watch, scarier sound design for example but I think Mrs Movies will handle it better because most of the scares come from not knowing what to expect and the plot is more or less the same. I think The Grudge also has matching Japanese / American series but the Japanese version also has a Ring/Grudge crossover which is fun.
For those Ringu enthusiasts out there... don't worry we will get to that movie in time ;)
I was literally just gonna reply that ringu would have been better-y’all be on top of it!

Missed opportunity by the Mr. to use cellphone to call the Mrs. on her phone after they got to see that first scene of the video.🤣
Samara crawling out of the tv is one of the most iconic and terrifying scenes ever.
I always find Ringu scarier, specifically for that scene. In the original, they don't use the static effect, and it all looks more real and creepy
I think most people have the same reaction as the character 'Noah' ....F******K!!!

I didn’t think this movie scared me until after I watched it. 2am the movie ended, and I really liked it. Then I walked to the bathroom and found myself freaking out, looking over my shoulder.
I feel like Mrs Movies needs a t-shirt that just says "I hate you all" for when she's watching things like this.
I hope someone do request for the grudge this month hehe that movie is scarier than this one.
I’ve been waiting for this one. The girl’s face in the closet gets me every time.
That shit scarred my soul as a teenager.
I really hope you guys react to Ring 2! I think that's an incredible movie, especially for a sequel! This movie scared so many people back when it came out originally because people thought the tape was really somewhere out there and that if they watched it, they would actually die. It was like the VHS version of a chain letter email. 😂
The CGI deer ruined the movie.
You like the sequel? Hmmm. Interesting.
@@robertyeah2259 Agreed.
@@robertyeah2259 So true
Hey! You did it! You made it through The Ring. It's all downhill from here! :D
I was 14 when this came out. I was obsessed with it. The Ring 2 and Ringu the original is also great.
"I saw her face" traumatized a whole generation
in 2019 my 11 yr old daughter went as Samara for halloween. we went to the Louisville halloween parade and everyone knew who she was dressed as and loved her costume. I used to call her Samara when she was younger because she would put her hair in her face and walk creepy to scare. she would scare me good lol. I saw this at the drive in with my grandma.
The little girl in this is the voice actress for Lilo in Lilo and Stitch btw
Once, a buddy of mine wrote to me, asking if I wanted to do something that night. I said "not really, started a movie half an hour ago." "Which one?" "The Ring." "Ok, then have fun." And 1.5 hours later the fucker called me. Dear Lord, my heart almost stopped.
I like how he hesitated to say "jump in" at the begging lol.
The disdain with which Mrs. Movies is watching this….
It tickles my sadistic funny bone :)
I love when you guys do horror movies. Your back and forth reactions and reactions to each other's reactions are great! :-)
This is the first movie in a long time that scared me when I first saw it. I was alone in the house, watching on the little TV in the kitchen. I watched the whole thing standing in the corner of the counter as far away from the TV as I could get. I haven't found a movie since that scared me and interested me all the way through.
Fun fact : A samara is the winged seed of a maple tree.
I like the colour grading in this movie. Made it that more eerie.
The atmosphere this movie has is captivating! Absolutely love it!
She's like a sad kitten
I watch Popcorn in Bed because Cassie, and her sister Carly, when she's on, get terrified when movies are scary and try to hide behind their blankets.
Thanks for the kind words Jim. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment with such kindness.
The way the Mrs. mumbles plot points during horror movies is too cute. I wish I stayed that sharp when scared!
This movie ranked at #20 in the 100 scariest movie moments on Bravo, cool reaction as always Mr. & Mrs. Movies, you both take care
What’s No1? :)
Mrs Movies Traumatized face at the end.. this was a fun watch along
“I'm not a geek, I'm a unique weasel.”
“You have got charisma!”
That intro ring flash though...that was slick lol. This movie, for whatever reason, hit me different. Knocked the fear right outta me.
I have to admit this movie spooked me pretty good when I first saw it. Talented film-making and storytelling.
🤣🤣🤣 it was so enjoyable to watch you guys. This wasn’t scary for me but I’ve been watching horror since I was 7 so my palette for horror is very high.
How high do you have to be for your palette to be very high?
It's not scary to me but it is a classic
9:03 OMG Pauly SHORE Sux, "buuuuuuuddy"! 😂😜
The Mrs. was quite feisty tonight! Hilarious. Two words - Bone Tomahawk! See ya on the next upload!
Good movie. Love it.
Mrs. Movies seemed to really enjoy it
Nice touch there with the last couple seconds LOL
Ah, the memories. My friend and I watched this in high school- her younger sister messed with us by calling the house phone using *67 LOL
You covered your eyes when they give you a glimpse of the girl. Lol!😊 Great reaction. Great movie. Well made.
Girl, watching you squirm (priceless) You're a trooper for keeping up with it.
In a parallel universe theres a channel called The movies, me and *you* where you guys crawl out of the tv to watch movies with us.
Haha love the subliminal edits going on. Clever, very clever. . .
Great reaction....and for the record....the Paulie Shore reafference WAS funny....lol
I'm on Mr. Cowboy Movies side this time. Pauly Shore movies suck. Watching any of his movies, except Encino Man, takes 5 years off your life-span according to D.A.A. reports
I actually like 18 again with pauly
Watched this alone for the first time. I think i was 15. Phone rang as the credits rolled. Checked the caller ID, it was my girlfriend calling. Didn't answer....just in case. I called her back.
“It’s okay now. They freed her.” Me: heheheheheh
The creepiest part is probably when the eerie sound of the ring chimes in and you know there's more creepiness to come.
Poor sweet ladie. Thank you for watching this. I appreciate you guys.
"I saw her face..." A Rick Baker masterpiece.
'Everytime I watch it, I feel like I'm a little closer to dying too'
Though said with regards the movie, what a fundamental fact. As I type this comment, my life approaches its end, it gets closer and we cannot reverse nor pause.
Fascinating.
Samara coming out of the TV was the scariest scene to me
Wow, the video's editing at the very ending was actually kinda scary. I thought it would be just the well alone, lol) Thanks!
That's awesome...I'm wearing my Dunder Mifflin shirt too
To me this is one of the rare occasions were the US version tops the original one.
This movie never scared me. But i loved the mystery and the acting.
I just rewatched it and didnt find it scary at all this time.
I was cracking up at the Pauly shore joke
The fucked up thing is that it's not just making the copy. You actually have to show it to someone.
Correct, so in the opening scene she was slyly trying to get her friend to watch it, which didn't happen, so Samara got her on the 7th day.
I just want to thank u both for this amazing channel! It helps with my depression im in right now so good!
I love the reaction: a frightened angry horse leaps to their death over the boat and Mrs. Movie is thinking "imagine the damage to the propeller."
I wonder how they made that scene. It looked pretty real lol
The first time I saw this, I was scared to be alone in a room with a screen for months. I couldn't get the creepy media images out of my head.
I've watched this twice since then, and it gets way less scary with multiple viewings. Instead I just admired the sound design, the direction, and Naomi.
“What did you think - it made you scared huh?”
“Yea😐”
Lmao!
Ahhh man. You really missed the opportunity to call Mrs Movies phone after she watched the "video" 😂🤣😭
Really, know what it's called?
Sadako vs kayako
