  • The only thing that let this bike down in the original build was the forks - let's fix that by fitting the new ERA from cross-discipline Italian suspension experts EXT! This is the finishing touch to the Hardcore Hardtail to give it the Mullet setup 🤘

      Long term review in brief is; zero problems, perfect function maintained. It doesn't get the beating that the bike big bike does, and there are some great upgrades on the fork since then, but I've had zero issues with this one! (and my 170mm ERA, which has had the upgrades)

    I will definitely get a EXT ERA, but I am waiting for the coil version. my fox 36 does not creak as bad yet, but I've definitely heard it when doing drops or doing the endos. cus of pressure changes can be quite big where I live. The fork has performed well. still no creaks,I did not ride as much as I wanted, but still the Fox would have creaked already.
    I don't mind it being an air fork, it's smooth, sensitive and supportive if setup right.
    Of ocurse I have to keep an eye on thhe pressures, but havign a coil shock it's less work.
    I think the spring on the fox 36 Smash pot conversion I hhad was too firm, but I did not bother testing that furhter, as the 36 was as noisy as yours.

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RamsayMacFarlane One of the reasons I want coil is pressure changes, not as much of an issue in the summer, but during winter it makes a huge difference.

    • @RamsayMacFarlane
      @RamsayMacFarlane  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mtbboy1993 this is true! But it also applies to the damping fluid probably more than the air spring... The oil will become very viscose at low temperatures and slow the damping right down, it's horrible when that happens! 😬 A lightweight oil for such would help a lot, that might solve your problem more than a coil spring would! The lack of progression from a coil is a very noticeable negative for aggressive riding which is why I would stick with air, especially the dual-chamber in the ERA - at least you can have a full adjustment based on the temperature!

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RamsayMacFarlane I defenitly noticed both oil and air pressure making a huge difference, but the fox 32 I had before I had to go up or down by 10psi usually fork was firm enough but when I took it out and was few mins out it got soft to urideable state. But yes the fork got harsh when temps went down too, I could notice it changing when I heated the fork up with drops i guess, authnumb and spring I usually can make it soft by riding it hard, but in winter it's harsh, but not experience it with fox 36 Smashpot, but might be different oil in there i don't know, but I did not ride in as much cold temps, but so far it performed well apart from it now creaking like yours did.

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RamsayMacFarlane I've not tested my fork enough yet but got rebound damping close now, 7 clicks on fast rebound. Not tested slow rebound yet. The compression just seem to harshen up the fork too much so run it fully open, both high and low, and Smashpot bottom out control at 0 too. I think I was told the coil version might not come before Xmas. So long wait. But will see how the ext fork performs. Much better crown design for sure.

    Where do you get that lube from, google or the EXT website doesn't bring anything up. The only lube they show it says is for metal on metal and nothing about wiper seals etc... Also how does it compare to coil forks like the Smashpot, is it nearly as good off the top, the same, or better?

    • @RamsayMacFarlane
      @RamsayMacFarlane  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sure EXT will supply it if you ask them... I can't compare directly with other forks as I'm not a journalist/tester giving them a bounce for an hour and providing a comprehensive report... BUT, I can say that with the dual air chamber, the 'off the top' feeling is very much like a coil spring and feel super plush. Long term review will show how the performance degrades (if at all) as they are abused in the Scottish weather... 👍

    Where did you land with your air pressures compared to the recommendations? You seem to efficiently user the travel.

    • @Philoniousmonk
      @Philoniousmonk ปีที่แล้ว

      At recommended + and ++, my fork feels very harsh and at max has used 65% of travel, even on massive drops where a FOX would bottom.

    • @RamsayMacFarlane
      @RamsayMacFarlane  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Philoniousmonk I would agree! Took a bit of time to experiment and ended up miles away from the recommended from what I remember... I haven't actually noted those settings because they're a bit different character for the hardtail compared to the primary bike (full suss) which I've now got ERA on too, recently, and setting them up too. Loving it!! For the hardtail I like to use less plush travel so there is less chassis roll and actually ramped it up after this video so it was a good bit more supportive. For the big bike it has to match the rear shock and vice versa, and getting the best travel/support out of both is quite different. Am I waffling? 🤪 In short, I don't actually have a set of pressures and settings for these forks yet, just running them as they go and adjusting. It's also a pain in the ass that the pressure you apply in the process is then not measurable due to the way it equalises - the pressure you put in the process will then read as less when it balances out (in my experience) so I can't just go and check what they were! Also probably advisable then to note down every single input because you can't retrospectively check it accurately 🤦‍♂️ I'd rather be able to just top it up and adjust it as you go! But that's a quirk of what is so far a fantastic spring setup!

      There is NO shitty Tokensystem. It uses a high pressure second positive air chamber instead as the Öhlins and Manitou forks.
      He obviously set the fork up with far too low pressure.
      I have a Manitou and rode this weekend with a buddy riding the Era and can tell you, these forks stand tall very easily and rode significantly higher even in steep terrain than this one above.
