- Let me share with you how I always have fresh lettuce, inside the comfort of my home for LESS than the cost of store bought (after you DIY build your system). Growing hydroponically simply means we use grow lights and water , along with nutrient solution and rocks, to grow just about anything!

When designing your system, I recommend starting with the lights/bulbs first since they are the most expensive part of the build. Then get your shelving to fit your light fixture width.
Remember, shop for the correct bulbs. Many of the newer LED full spectrum bulbs do a fine job. However, if you use fluorescent, get 5000 to 6500 kelvin with as high lumens as possible, especially if you are not going to use it in front of a sunny window. For most cost effective results, use bulbs with the highest lumens & lowest watts which are also 5000 - 6500K. Mine work fine for only 4.5 square feet, and 2 bulbs per shelf. Lumens measures light brightness, wattage measures energy usage (low watts can still be very bright).

I used 2 x 8 lumber for my boxes. if I were to redesign them, I would use 1 x 8. The 2 x 8 is too heavy to tend. Use 6 mil plastic to line the boxes (on my Amazon)

My landlords said I could have some space for a garden if I wanted to, but the deer are so prevalent around here I would have to spend a fortune fortifying the space. I have decided to grow my own greens under DR. RX that I consume 7 Oz per day. I can't afford to do that. And who knows where it was grown, nutrient content - if any - and it is NOT organic. And it certainly isn't FRESH!
That is a LOT of lettuce to entrust to someone else growing it for me and I cannot afford it -even non-organic.

This is beautiful. I do this in my bedroom I have grown zucchini, potatoes, & lettuce. I live alone so I don't bother anyone, I have a large garden but this is nice for winter. This supplements my greenhouse so I don't have to go out there when it is cold. I have 4 aero gardens near my dining room windows. They fit in just nicely. I grow some unusual rare varieties there for fun. Thank you.

This was an amazing video. I am however paused that my love for gardening will be endless. It can start at seed starting (indoors), raised beds, soil etc. It is a good thing gardening is so rewarding LOL. I am yet excited to go from flower loving to growing food for my family. But everybody says, "You need a pump, and at least a 15-inch tall reservoir," etc. I am SO GLAD you published this video (excellently made, btw).

PS RE lights- you can buy LED blue and red growing lights (both colors in one light) on Amazon for $20 each. They mimic the sun so closely that plants grown with them develop the same phytonutrients that they do with outside sunlight (fluorescent lights won't do that; neither does sunlight through glass, sorry).

Wonderful! Thank you for letting us know. I found when my system was not near supplemental sunlight, the plants struggled. I was able to grow some with one LED strip but it would have been better with more light for sure.

This is the best video I've seen for having an indoor garden. (My shelving is the same size as yours, so I can relate to wanting the smaller lights.) I'm also studying square foot gardening, and I see you have some videos on that subject. So between my raised bed in my community garden, done the square-foot way, and growing my lettuce indoors with your system, looks like we'll get the veggies we need. I plan to start growing lettuce indoors using your method later this year when I can no longer grow it outdoors here in Indiana. I already have the wire shelves with the grow lights attached. I also have solo cups with and without holes and a few varieties of lettuce seeds. The only thing I'll really need to buy is the hydroponic nutrient solution. My shelves with the grow lights are currently being used to grow seedlings for my square foot garden. Now I'll be able to use my shelves and grow lights all year round.Thank you for this video.

I just add to them. Some varieties of lettuce (possibly another video, ha) seem to grow longer than others, rarely, I may clean the bottom cup if needed, especially if they are getting old but still producing.

I used distilled water for lettuce before. Might not have the nutrients to absorb, but it still grew

also add a fish tank bubbler with an aeration stone submerged this will supercharge your O2 levels
the better way for massive yeilds is to float a piece of foam cut to the size of your box and set your net pots into form fitting cut outs. this keeps light off the roots, your solution areateted and droplets of solution always forming on the roots until they submerge. youll double your yeilds
Hi, thank you. I actually tried that when I first started designing the system. I had 3 boxes with 8 cut-outs each, fitted for 2 inch net pots. This limited me to 24 plants in the system. I need many more to have a continuous supply. Also, the water was too cold for the lettuce to grow well and required me to use more solution (which is expensive). I then tried a water heater, and with the bubbler, it looked tacky with all the cords PLUS I could not do the succession planting (due to limited number of cut-outs) which is what makes this design so unique. The more electricity I use to run it defeats the purpose of growing it inside the home because the electricity is the most expensive part. I tried many different things and this worked best for me. Nice setup I'd only change a CPL things. Should of used PVC sheet or mylar for the inside of your boxes instead of clear. Also should use cups that ain't see through Roots shouldn't be exposed to light. Also have to use red spectrum for flowering. So one soft white one cool white.
Well your setup is near the window so idk if it matters. Obviously you know from experience. I'm just beginning. Other then that your video very educational.

I so loved this episode! You did an amazing job with this system and it's so practical. I was wondering if this can be used to grow seedlings on it. I just started my seeds recently and trying to figure out how to give them the light they will require before I can get them planted outside.
Thank you! yes, you certainly can use it as a starter area for seedlings. Then, once you move your seedlings out, you can grow lettuce in the summer! How about that? lol I hope you can give it a try. The bulbs are the most important feature of the system. Since I have a sunny window, I use a low wattage/high lumen bulbs (explained in a little more detail below the video and also saves on energy cost). However, if you do not have supplemental sunlight, please consider using a high lumen bulb (lumens are on the bulb package and 1000 bulbs website).

I really appreciate that you took time to experiment over a period of time to test something and POST your results. over the years, I have been following certain gardeners online and I have been so frustrated. I just tell myself, gardening is full of experiment.
I did something similar in 2012 but I stopped as I wasn't too happy with the results. I got the shelf and the lighting and the other basics. having watched your video, I know now where I went wrong. I'm definitely going to try again.
I haven't found the time to buy Mel's SFG book. but I started taking down notes so I could practice succession planting this year. that's one of the many things I learned from "listening" to you before I go to bed. (yes, I "listen" not watch :) )

if you want to maximize the use of your window light then add a very high reflective sheet over them.

This is so cool. I plan to grow salad greens and some commonly used herbs this winter. Thank you for sharing this video! Have you tried Swiss Chard using this method? Since it is a much bigger plant, I assume it will need a bigger container.
I saw this solution for the algae issue in clear cups on another channel. Place a strip of tape vertically on your bottom clear cup then spray paint the cup. Remove the tape and you will have a clear window so you can see the level of your solution while blocking the light from the rest of the cup.

I think it would work, but also since we are using the cups individually (lifting occasionally to keep the water moving), it easy to check the solution
I just love your Gardening to Cooking videos. In the past, I have grown lettuce in an Aerogarden hydroponic system, which is an excellent product by the way. While the lettuce looked beautiful, I thought the taste did not equal lettuce grown in soil. I am wondering if you have noticed any flavor difference in growing lettuces in different mediums. Also, I have a 4 foot grow light system and have been doing my best to find 4 foot long wire shelving -----still working on it, but so far no luck.
