@@curiousj1287 To be honest im not sure, but it would probably be too cold outside if your in your winter, maybe in a pot in direct light from a window inside could start them
off. i saw the tip on a gardening show and thought id try it. dont plant them too close to each other, a good 6-8 inches apart was recommended. good luck. let me know
      how you go :)

Storing garlic as indeed been a problem here in Vietnam, where it's very hot & humid. The only advantage we see in having them in the fridge is that they are exposed to daily view, which encourages us to use them in a timely fashion, especially when we see they begin to sprout. They do sprout quicker in the fridge than under the cabinet.

Trust me Jerry, I have no problem using the whole bulb, when I cook. I started using fresh garlic, when I recently bought a Healthy Cooking Cookbook by Chef Gordon Ramsey. My favorite dish is a Salmon and Lentil beans salad recipe that requires on bulb of garlic. I use most of it for the dish and a small portion for the salad dressing. Thanks for the storage tip.😊

I am Sicilian and I love garlic. My mother used to store garlic in a wooden barrel along with onions and her pasta
(spaghetti) was to kill for especially her meatballs from a recipe from the old country loaded with romano cheese.
It is a shame that old cooking is lost to us.

I've got a modern house, very well isolated and pretty warm. When you say: store it in a cool, dry, well ventilted & dark place my direction question is: where would that be? For now I'll try and see if I can somehow find a spot in my hallway. It's also pretty well isolated, hope that the moist coats in there don't ruin it.

Hi Jerry, you mention throwing garlic if it sprouts. Yep, I agree with that, If you let it sprout above about a quarter inch from a clove, because it does tend to ‘suck out’ the garlic-ness if it gets longer.
On the other hand, whilst I also recognise it is bitter, in my experience the bitterness comes from the sprout itself, at this short length, not from the garlic.
So, When I come to use it I split it through the sprout and poke the sprout out from each side and toss that out. Then I find it to be about normal in use.

I am intimidated on how to store garlic in oil. I read that if not done properly it can release toxins.

Thank you so much for this great information. We got a LOT of garlic bulbs from the food bank, and now I know how to keep them while I process them.
I've been breaking open some bulbs today and I've noticed some of them are brown and others even have a little pink going on. Can anyone tell me if this is a problem? Thanks so much.
