Thanks for this comparison. I have been curious of the differences between these two. I really have been pleased with my XRS. Want to try the Field Stock at some point when they offer more action inlets.
Great video, good comparison side to side. I was looking at both of these stocks a year ago. If you want to use it for precision rifle competition XRS is your choice, if you want to do some hunting, choose the Field Stock. I put a field Stock on my Tikka T3X Super Varmint 6.5 Creedmore, light enough for hunting but decent for precision shooting, I love it.
Caleb, consider covering and sealing that fibreglass insulation in the ceiling. All day long, tiny fibers could be falling into the air, and you might be breathing them in brother. You know how you're supposed to wear gloves when you handle the stuff? That's because it implants in your skin! Just imagine what it could be doing to your lungs.
That disclaimer is not on the MDT Field Chassis page, but I assure you it has the exact same issue with metal mags. Howa 1500 in 6.5 Creedmoor, MDT Field Stock, Accuracy International metal AICS magazine. I thought it may have been related to the position of the shoulder on the 6.5 vs 308 and maybe the 308 would work - but this video cured me of that thought. What appears to happen is the base of the round is still being retained by the mag lips and it goes forward enough to pass the shoulder of the round below it, and the rim goes down, bullet goes up, bolt rams into the side of the case instead of driving it home. At the range, I short stroked it back - but not all the way back to pick up the next round - and it'd pop up out of there. I'm considering trimming the lips on the metal one to see if I can make it work but I might return it idk.
@@calebwhiteknivesWhen I say it rams into the side of the case - it does that but the angle prevents it from moving so the base is still held in by the feed lips, and it just gets stuck and won't move any more forward. I'm sure enough force would break something.
KUDO'S for a great comparison video! The other thing that I liked was with the XRS... the feel was quite a bit more sturdy and fit like a glove being a left hand shooter shooting a RH chassis setup ( which utilized my whole life and accelerates my operation compared to being RHanded on a RH bolt gun... around a tenth and a half quicker than most of the competitors in my classes ). Fully enjoyed the info! Respectfully, Seth
Thank you, and thanks for watching. Yeah, it definitely has a sturdier feel...for not a whole lot more money. The Field is still a great simple option to chunk out the garbage plastic most factories are shipping, lol.
I'm curious what you have your scopes wrapped in. Is it Multicam camo wrap, or ....? Thanks for the comparison video. Just got a Mossberg Patriot LR Tactical with the MDT Field chassis. Loving it!
Yes, I use multicam camo-wrap, or similar on most of my scopes and forearms...it's less destructive than painting a really expensive scope. And quicker sometimes. Although I usually end up painting them any way. It's also a quick way to get a camo job on them and keeps the cold off the hand on aluminum forearms when bumping around in the woods. I think I ordered it from CamoForm? Maybe? I'll look for the packaging and post it up.
How does your wrap handle moisture? Does it get nasty when it gets wet via rain or snow? Am trying to decide between camo wrap, or vinyl wrap. Leaning towards the camo wrap.

Did i hear you can get the MDT field stock in howa ? Through brownells? If so that would be frcken awesome. Theres not enough chassis stock support for howa 1500 actions.
The metal is a 5 rounder; but I’ve picked up their 3rd polymer since then, and it’s virtually flush fit. Works very well in all the chassis/stocks I’ve tried it in.
Have a heavy barrel in the field stock and keep my bipod tight and you can see the stock flex when you move it side to side on the bipod. Not so much I think it'll contact the barrel but that's what I noticed. Might not be the greatest for heavier barrels. XRS certainly looks much more rigid up front.
It's made by a company called Brandit(???). It was a gift from someone; so I don't think its a mainstream brand or anything. It works really well for waterproofing and is felt lined.
Can an Arca rail be attached to the Field stock, or XRS only? I think Arca rails are a certain width and never smaller, which would make it extend beyond the edges of the Field stock fore end. I want quick attachment to a tripod for coyote hunting, without having to lug a rifle+tripod single unit on my shoulders over the course of 15-20 miles in a single night.
@calebwhiteknives Excellent! I'm just now educating myself on intricacies of newer mounting platforms, like the Arca rails. I'm an old school Picatinny soldier. I really like the Arca system for rapid attachment and adjustment for all of my shooting needs. It seems highly versatile.
If MDT made the XRS for Howa 1500 LA I would get it to replace a H-S Precision stock I have for a 30-06. Might have to take my chances with the Field stock since they actually do an inlet for LA...
I believe they do. At least MDT allows you to purchase it and then I called MDT and they told me for the Howard 1500 6.5 PRC long action you have to purchase the 300 WM magazine and bend the lips out for loading purposes. Ordered and we will see.
Hi from Australia. I am looking at the XRS for my Howa 1500 in .223. Did you find it necessary to bed the action to the stock or did it shoot fine out of the box?
I’ve not experienced anything yet that would make it likely. Carrying the Field Stock around with a flush mag, and the longest of the two releases; so far I haven’t experienced a problem.
One of these would be nice on the new RUGER American Gen.2 Predator (plus a Timney Calvin trigger). With the Field stock, the American Gen.2 in 6.5 PRC, the BURRIS ELIMINATOR 6 - 20 x 52 with its sensors and built in ballistic engine long range western US hunting would be very accurate (in states where this score is legal). A boy can dream!
Funny, I want to get a ruger American gen 2 in 223 as a first gun for my nieces. Think black field stock with the burnt bronze fluted barrel would be a kick ass look for a first rifle. Accurate enough they can use it pretty far if they want and cheap enough I won't cry about letting it go. Lol
Talk about "timely", I just picked up a Vanguard in 240 Weatherby mag, the factory stock is terrible, Black Friday is a week away and the MDT Field stock will be coming home. Thanks for this review, much appreciated.
Indeed! A fine choice for the Vanguard. That was one of the first rifles I bought myself when I turned 18…in 300WTHBY. Which was a bit overkill for the varmints I was hunting 😆

I hope you find some excuse to get the TIMBR stock, too. I've been praying to The Nine that someone would make a solid video like this comparing all three. >_>
Not fussing man but i wish you would have shown the mloc construction on the feild stock. I believe the overmolded aluminum stops before the mloc so it just straight polymer. Something to consider if you are going to run a bipod on the field stock long term.
I considered taking the whole thing apart and digging around; but my curiosity for getting the action together and scoped so I could get to the range overrode my curiosity about the mlok/aluminum situation in the handle. I don’t believe it goes very far; to your point, long-term bipod use may eventually distort it. Time will tell, but I rarely keep bipods on my rigs full time unless they’re dedicated bench guns.
The metal magazines all perform more or less fine...it seems to be predominately the one polymer magazine shown. It's frustrating to be sure. I would say if MDT can address this issue, it'll make this stock a no-brainer.
I get what your saying. But if my scope can’t take that…it isn’t gonna stand up to regular field use, or even more extreme duty situations. I’d rather know early in the shop than find out in the field.
Thanks for this comparison. I have been curious of the differences between these two. I really have been pleased with my XRS. Want to try the Field Stock at some point when they offer more action inlets.
Glad to help! I expect they’ll probably start adding more inlets the the catalog for the field stock. The response seems to be very positive to it.

How do you like the thinness of the butt of the stock for the field stock? Seems a little too thin for me but maybe I wouldn’t notice too much?

That Field Stock is used in the Mossberg Patriot Long Range Tactical. The Patriot doesn't come with a MDT magazine. It is a different brand.

Quick question, is that metal mag a 3 or 5 rounder? I like the shorter mags and dont want to make my hunting gun to bulky
The metal is a 5 rounder; but I’ve picked up their 3rd polymer since then, and it’s virtually flush fit. Works very well in all the chassis/stocks I’ve tried it in.

@@calebwhiteknives Thank you. I've heard of them. I think I need one.
I really like the meatiness of the XRS Chassis.
It does feel a bit more substantial than the Field, but not as thick and blocky/heavy as a full aluminum chassis. Some of them can be a bit much.
Can an Arca rail be attached to the Field stock, or XRS only? I think Arca rails are a certain width and never smaller, which would make it extend beyond the edges of the Field stock fore end.

No bedding needed! Straight from the box…aluminum bedding block. Just grip it and rip it.
That's exactly the build I was about to put together. How did it go?
@@ryanbrophy8814 so far so good. Accuracy seems promising with the minimal shooting I’ve done on it so far.

Anything that will fit MLOCK, or a sling swivel stud. All my old standard Harris bipods fit just fine. No mods needed.
Do they have one for a long action rifle 30.06 I have a Remington 783 chambered in 30.06. 22 inch barrel.
Not certain. If the 783 is a standard long action footprint they probably have something in their catalog.
Can the grip on the Field Stock be replaced with something different like a vertical grip?
I don’t believe so yet. It’s fairly vertical though. My theory is they may add that in the future.
It is a verticle grip....
Well done! Very helpful! Many thanks!
You're welcome!
Aren't all the Tikka T3 actions the same length, with only a different bolt stop??? At least until you get into some Magnum length actions maybe
In theory, yes.
