The twilight of what was an awesome era for "raw" physicality in The NBA, as in all sports. Be reminded, prior to the '80s, society was more punitive and unforgiving, Kids were tougher and more self-reliant, and, there were fewer teams vying for a giant surplus of upper-quality players, who were overseen by "weak" Players' Associations. Back then, Darwinian-like rules invited constant 'Intimidation'.
What superstar today compares to Larry Bird? Not een remotely? In hockey, to Gordie Howe, who'd win scorin' trophies while bein'a League leader in fights and pen/min.? In Football, to The vintage Raiders of 'Old'? In Baseball, familiar occurrances, like ruthless Slides, a la 'Ty Cobb', and some 'chin music'. Come to think, regards physical play, whistles were largely kept in the pocket. Now, almost can't even touch a QB.
