  • 2021 is almost here and the LGBTQIA+ community still hasn’t gotten the representation they deserve in mainstream Bollywood movies and Indian TV shows. Here’s our reaction to some of the problematic and stereotypical queer representation in Bollywood movies over the years. About time this changes?

The fact that Akshay Kumar really thought a transgender woman would go out and buy feminine clothes and try them on in public without fear of hate crime in India. Matlab self acceptance has never been that easy.

    • @nazneensande6961

In a movie it's really not a transgender but they are trying to represent spirit of a transgender who has entered in the body of Akshay Kumar......and also people are scared because he suddenly starts behaving differently.

    • @shivaniarunkumar1248

    1) Bisexuality who??
    2) Gay men= act like cis females
    3) femme lesbians? who?
    4) trans people= best portrayed by cis actors
    5) Pan? pots and pan? is there a sexuality like that lol tf?
    6) actual people coming out in the industry for representation? no, we'd rather have homosexuality made fun of
    7) what even is asexuality
things will change when REAL people start coming out instead of doing a sympathy trope in films and shows.

Bollywood had the potential to UNITE INDIA by showing cultures form each region, giving knowledgeable inputs in their movies (just like ANIME) but it failed miserably and I have no hope for bollywood.

Seriously india has to change the way of thinking about LGBTQ and also let children know about it..because me and my friends actually know the term LGBTQ at standard 10 only! And one of my friend after knowing about it she came to me as bi. She told me that she felt something wrong in her and when she came to know about LGBTQ she clarified herself.. Seriously the government should allow children to know about LGBTQ!! And thank you for reacting to it 😊

Couldn't agree more!! Whenever I talked to my collegemates and tried to make them understand , they all asked me " Lesbian h kya ? " Or some just started looking at me wierdly... Some think of LGBTQ+ as a joke.. And it hurts that they don't even want to understand.. I hope someday, people will really stop this behavior and if they can't understand atleast They would stop mocking and discouraging those who want to become ally.

True it also makes my blood boil... But i just want to mention there are movies like "Ek ladki ko dekha to aisa laga" and "Shubh mangal zyada saavdhan" where there is good representation as well.. and i hope we get many more movies like the two... If there are more good LGBTQ+ representation recommendation pls add.

But movies which show correct representation are still not gaining as much acclaim as the ones reviewed which just shows how much the heteronormative ideas are ingrained into our minds that people still find such situations funny.

Recently, some of the better movies on LGBT themes are produced by the regional film industries. For instance, the fireflies. You all are so right in saying that Bollywood gender representation is problematic and inadequate. It doesn't capture the entire range of things and only perpetuates homophobia.

I seriously believe 'Dostana' movie should not be judged with others. It was one of the first movie to bring the concept (or even the word Gay) to mainstream Bollywood, although the protagonists in it weren't gays. I remember what a taboo it was prior to that movie.

I'm about to turn 23 and it's sad to know that I'll probably die before Bollywood has actual LGBTQ representation that is not homophobic or comedic relief or before society accepts LGBTQ people... Being Desi gay is worse only after Middle East and African gay... It's sad that we have to live in a society that will never understand us and will instead reject, curse or bully us...
